Love that you kept the take where you snapped a string, if I hadn't seen the string flapping I would have had no idea. Amazing playing as ever.
great catch
The way you switch back and forth between fingers and pick so swiftly and smoothly is amazing!!!
It's CGI.
@@bulletsforteeth5029the whole thing is CGI.
@@bulletsforteeth5029 Music in general is CGI.
His girlfriend sure like this technique! Hahah
The Buck Grip.
He's spoke about it.
Developed because of some fucked up finger pain.
Serious!
Man is a genius.
The new guitar hero.
❤
I am always in awe watching you play so effortlessly and expressively. Stoked for the new Cardinal Black album.
Killer playing, tasty sound and vibe. Chris you got it all including the knowledge of a true professional artist. It’s a pleasure to watch your videos. Keep on !!!
Chris,
I’ve been watching you for quite some time. This post, and especially the Sonic playing was SO MUCH in the groove. Well done, great playing guitar slinger!
The Soul Must Flow! Thank you for producing these videos. I really enjoy listening to your playing.
The soul must flow! That was gold to me As a F. Herbert fan.
My wife bought me a Duo Sonic as my first electric guitar almost exactly a year ago. I had just accepted a new job after having tremendous struggles with my previous one, and she got it for me as a thank you for pushing through and finding a better job/situation.
For that reason I will never ever get rid of the guitar because of its sentimental value, but it’s also just an amazing instrument. The 24” scale length plays incredibly fast and smooth, and the pickups sound fantastic. I initially thought it felt like a perfect blend of strat and tele (it’s a string through like a tele and the bridge pickup has some tele twang to it, the body is shaped like a strat, and the neck sounds more stratty), but after playing it over the past year I found that it definitely has its own distinct tonal flavor. Needless to say, it’s just fantastic I would highly recommend it to anyone!
That’s a truly beautiful story. Best wishes to you both.
@@kohala1815Thank you, this guitar is incredibly special and so is my wife! I’m a blessed man ❤️
I find your technique utterly puzzling. That right hand mashup wizardry combined with the left hand neck strangling. It sounds amazing.
I think the key is to focus on the noises coming out of the amp and let the fingers work it out for themselves. The other school of thought tends to focus entirely on the movement of the hands or pick minimising it (rick graham perhaps taking this to its limit) and the hands when they're playing look like they're very precise and doing the minimum movement and thus lots of fast notes can be created - especially if you use high gain, but the resulting sound is arguably not that great to listen to - it's not sloppy and uncoordinated but nevertheless its very monosyllabic. Maybe the best method of developing technique sits somewhere between the 2. The potential flaw with mostly being driven by the sounds you're creating and letting your arms and hands figure out how to play is that your technique may be less efficient and wastes energy or develops some bad habit like tension in your playing. to minimise that I'd suggest putting some focus making sure that you're relaxed and comfortable - like "that's the sound I want, now I want it to feel easy to play" - like Eddie with his big cheesy grin when he's playing something.
But yeah, that would be my take. I doubt Chris has spent much time figuring out how to move his hands like that so if it looks complicated or difficult then it might be if you decided you were going to try and replicate it, but the thing to aim for is the tone and sound you want.
That out of phase sound is one of those that you could listen to for hours and that's just one of the reasons Peter Green was so revered
. Nice vid Chris 👍
Beautiful playing, Chris, especially on the playout - so much so that I picked up mine after not playing it for a spell and fell in love with it again!
Beautiful tones !!
Man, you are the most amazing guitar player I have ever seen and listened to... Your beautiful melodies are out of this world, but they make me feel motivated to keep growing as a musician.
As always, great playing
Damn, everything in this video sounded so freaking beautiful. Subscribed for sure!
Excellent video, lots of inspiring info and playing
This has got to be the first instance in history of Friday Fretworks that I see a string break during the "jam" section. And the guitar stayed in tune! AND You still nailed the solo! Kudos to you man!
iT´S A FIXED BRIDGE...
@@ViciousMaximus Yeah, because completely relieving tension on one string has no impact on tuning....
Not in a fixed bridge@@guyblin
@@ViciousMaximus Yeah - a fixed bridge does nothing to counter the neck tension release when a string goes. I mean go and try it - downtune the low E until it's slack and see if the rest of the strings are still holding tune. They won't be. Unless they can defy physics.
You're the kind of player that can make a $50 garage sale special sound amazing. Nice work!
The solo starting at 6:20, man that was terrific! Great musician and a well spoken chap as well.
Your control of that pick is unbelievable. Bringing it in and out of action 😲
You are a true artist my friend. Much respect.
Friday fretworks ....Nice 👍❤...Love the tones brother.
Jam at 9:17 is out of this world man. you are really gifted.
snapped the E string and kept going like a pro
He's a pro.
To say the least
high e string sucks anyway
Ha I thought I saw something
Not having a tremolo does *really* help in this regard 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can definitely vouch for the Duo Sonic. I bought a H-S version about four years back and got a lot of fun out of it. Recently gave it to my 17yo as a first 'good' guitar and she loves it. Great for smaller hands with plenty of punch in the H (which also splits) while the S (neck) has a nice warmth without getting muddy.
You are a very distinctive player Chris, I recall another accomplished guitar man extolling the virtues of the Fender Duo-sonic, John Huessenstaam who is the original guitar man for the 'Surf Punks', he is one of the more advanced players of the baby boomer generation, it seems this guitar has much to offer for a small price tag, cheers!
Your playing is mesmerizing Chris thanks
Great to hear there is work happening on cardinal blacks follow up album. Can’t wait to hear new stuff
That rendition of "Need Your Love so Bad" was absolutely beautiful!
Agree, that was absolutely amazing...
I got my friend one of these duo sonics back in 19 for his birthday and we were both blown away at how clear and detailed it sounded. Perfect through his twin reverb. He played a lot of math rock at the time and it was so perfect. For the price it might be a best kept secret in the fender line up
I could listen to Chris play all day long.
You and the Duo Sonic are a match of heaven, so beautiful =)
Oh Chris, that last solo you played on the Duo Sonic, was beautiful mate?!?! such wonderful surprises
in the melody, and the scales you use are lovely, was caught completely off guard by that, and That is such
a rare thing nowadays, cheers Chris.
PS, you got me with the Out of Phase, solo played on the LP too
That solo with the copper though! 🔥🔥🔥
Your a legend Chris!
That jam with the SG was butter smooth Chris, amazing stuff
I love your playing!
Perfect jam
Amazing guitar playing!
jam at 9:19 sounds like 'who will your next fool be?" love it...
I'm convinced you could play a broomstick with fishing line strings and make it sound magical. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, insights, and unbelievable playing with us mere mortals, Chris. Cheers!
incredible guitar lead playing to start the video :) nice camera angle that shows the intracacies of the right hand work. incredible !
⚓️ Thanks Chris 😎
Incredible playing
your videos always make me feel better .
Great playing! Very original styling! Good Brownface Fender amp choice too.
Fantastic playing.
Serious Respect for posting your iso track from a gig. Sounds great man!
The sound of those pickups from the duo sonic are absolutely killerr
Thanks for your spotlight on the Duo-Sonic - amazing sounds! Of course a big part of it is your playing style - so I don't expect it to sound such as good in my hands. 😉
(Although I think it would pair well with my Mesa Boogie Studio 22+)
Came here for Chris Buck's tone and playing. Listened to the gear talk. Stayed for Chris Buck's tone and playing.
Hell Man
Great playing
Great work
You could have stopped the video after the first Jam, just blew me away. ❤
Man the piece you played at the end on the Fender was just incredible !!! What is it ? Absolutely beautiful tune and playing to match !! 😻🎸👌🔥🔥🔥
I did the out of phase thing on my ES 345 with a push-pull on one volume pot. Easy to do, sounds completely authentic. And I completely agree about the Varitone. Many guitar players disengage it or bypass it altogether, but I find it useful-especially in a studio setting.
My wife has a 1959 duo-sonic. When both pickups are on they are in series and push nicely. She had a tweed champ. What a combo!
This is the first I've heard out of phase discussed from a technical perspective and the tone from swapping that magnet around is beautiful.
Much appreciation for this and the rest of your contributions to my understanding of this wonderful instrument.
Thank you!
Peter Greene & Jimmy Page : Bruh
@@saucerfullofzepp4203 I'm familiar with who popularized I was just saying I've never seen the tech aspect of it and appreciating the demonstration.
It’s all in his hands, he could make a broomstick with a rubber band sounds incredible. CP is my favorite guitarist of late. So incredible. I’ve been playing for 35+ years. Blows my mind
I've got an Epiphone '59 and the first thing I did was flip the magnet in the neck pickup. Absolutely love the out of phase sound
(I then polished it, swapped the knobs and pretend I'm Gary Moore!😂 )
The first JAM is fantastic !
i loove it !!
your playing is incredible! Like John Mayer and Jeff Beck combined in a fresh, unique new package
Friday fretworks makes my Fridays!
Amazing content, anyone chasing tone without a massive budget needs advice like this. Thanks to chris's videos, I own a few high end guitars and recently got a second-hand first gen shop black revstar 502 with p90s and wrap over tail for £380 (!!), and it has excellent resonance, playability and tone. We dont need 59 les pauls and original JTM45s to make great music...
I love Friday Fretworks!
Ooh, cool 'idiots guide' to reversing polarity on the pickups! Nice one Chris.
Not only a knowledgeable man but also a great player!
Nice-thank you.
Killer intro jam❤️🔥
That little 'Duo' is cool. It's always amazed me how we find tones we like, and how our taste changes over the years. I remember having one of those in the 60's, and selling it for $25!! LOL Another example is the Yamaha Revstar. I needed something with P90's. At the time the Yamaha Revstar is what people were talking, and raving about. I did my research, and ordered a black Standard with p90's. I waited 8 months to get one!! I'm still not sure why!?!? But I was very excited, there was so much good stuff being said about them! I unboxed it, played it for 10 days, a lot! Then sent it back. It was not my bag at all. It felt completely foreign to me. Maybe because I've played Gibson and Fender for 50 years? Now I've found an SG, w/p90's and a wrap tail bridge that I like!! They took the Yamaha back, no questions asked. Thanks, Peace.. --gary
So happy you’ve done a video like this as for a while it’s been ATB high end vintage stuff although nice to see it’s really Wayne’s World stuff .
That was a beautiful tone you got using the Varitone Switch.
What's the guitar?
Gibson ES-355
You sir are one Crisp Buck
14:12 - I bought a Fender Duo Sonic from Sweetwater because of its super lightweight and because I never owned a short-scale guitar before. I changed out the bridge for an amazing brass BABICZ bridge and I put in the Seymour Duncan Antiquity Duo-Sonic Pickup Set and then it REALLY came alive! Super amazing guitar, I love it so much.
I picked up a Duo-Sonic like 2016 or so a bit after Fender did the Offset Series and It's been my go-to ever since. Mine seems to sit right between a Strat and a Tele, not doing either great but does both decently with a super simple layout. I also seem to get along way better with shorter scales so good to keep in mind if you don't.
9:17 That Jam is really in the Style of I'm Gonna Find Another You! Great improv dude!
It's Need Your Love So Bad by Fleetwood Mac/Peter Green.
Maybe, same Chord Progression @@teaganfoley2400
great!
Brilliant guitar playing.👍
Good playing man
That lady bit on the duosonic - so tasty! Not that the rest of your playing isn't! Thanks for the treat. Oh, and the camera view on the last track showed your right hand work so nicely!
Last bit, not lady bit! That made my post more interesting.
Chris you’re a criminally underrated guitarist.
The Duo Sonic is definitely one of my favourite guitars, so unique and easy to play!
Curiously mine has the two pickups out of fase in the middle position, which was the result of swapping the original bridge pickup with a new ona with the "wrong" polarity. It's an odd sound and I was planning to correct it, but lately I got used to it and like it more and more, so I think I'll keep it!
Im with ya on the supers , gotta love em no matter what era they're from . Tho some arguably better than others . Cheers
I absolutely love this guy's playing. I am a student of right hand technique. His style of fingers and pic is beautiful and very organic and natural...its not Travis picking and I don't want to categorize it. Whatever it is, it is beautiful and works.
We'd typically refer to this as hybrid picking and I agree, Chris's right hand technique is next level!
The duo sonic comes close to that classic 4th position strat sound, but with a unique texture to it. Amazing sound. And having learned of how lovely shorter scales are to play over the last year, this is very enticing. I got an 80s fender bullet bass, and a short scale taylor acoustic, and have been loving the comfortably. I guess it's time to look for a Duo Sonic :)
I bought a Duo-Sonic. Swapped the single coil bridge pickup for a SD Hotrails....the thing is a beast now. I gig with it and recorded an EP with my band. By far my favorite guitar I've ever owned
that's the lp I've been looking for! do you have a video about that guitar? Great playing by the way!
i love your playing on the duo sonic
Around the one minute mark, you start to play a faster flurry of notes, I couldn’t quite tell if those were a mix of 16th note triplets or septuplets or other rhythmic subdivisions but I’m curious how you developed the skill to so tastefully switch into those faster passages that help build the energy of the solo. Are you aware of the subdivisions you’re playing or is it all by ear?
Good work Buckmaster. Da iawn.
Great tone .
I bought a Duo Sonic when they first came out with the one mentioned today. I had the PU's changed with a custom shop Duncan wound 55 Tele at the bridge and a 66 Rickenbacker scatter wound at the neck. It gives me the era Pete Townsend went between those 2 sounds. I was lucky the the women who wound Pete's PU's was still alive and working for Ric a few half days every week and she did my PU. She even had it shipped as a replacement part so I paid $75. I have the orange Duo with the maple fretboard. the pickguard is vintage plastic tortoise shell. The new tortoise shell is clear plastic with a photo of the old plastic. You can see the difference.
Chris I always enjoy your stuff, great playing btw. So, the Fender Duo with the Maple neck huh? Is there really a tonal difference between them? Thanks Keep on Rockin"
RIP that E string lol, absolutely seamless take!
You are an absolute killer guitar player!
As ever, I will put in a plug for the "half-out-of-phase" mod. This trick with 2-pickup guitars was developed by Bill Lawrence, as far as I know, and involves standard phase reversal of the pickups, but with an added twist. By inserting a capacitor in series with the neck pickup, you reduce its bass content. This still results in cancellation, but not for the low end. The end result is a different sound, lacking the nasal honk we associate with phase-reversal, and with NO, I repeat, *NO* volume drop. Fender used this trick on the Jerry Donahue Telecaster to mimic the neck+middle position of a Strat on a 2-pickup Telecaster. I implemented it on a beater I have that is best described as a full-scale (25.5") Duosonic, and it sounds like a Strat N+M. I implemented it on an old Vantage guitar with a pair of Schaller humbuckers. Naturally, it doesn't sound like a Strat, but it provides a neck+bridge sound that is very usable, very different, and very trouble-free. I don't think it is trademarked or patented, so folks should feel free to include it on their 2-pickup guitars. Broadens the tonal palette nicely.
Tasty playing.
I'm thinking of a drinking game... Take a shot every time Chris says "which is of course"!
Watching you play is not helping my inferiority complex. I have a capri Orange Duosonic sat next to me on the sofa. It always makes me happy.
That play-out had undeniable feel.
The Desert Sand Duo Sonics with the gold pickguards are some of the coolest-looking guitars. I have one of the 22.5" Duo Sonics and I love how thin the neck is.
You are really a super guitar player!!! ❤
