    wonderful. my budgie is scared of anything new. I made her a super new swing and attached a favourite toy to it, it took her a good 4-5 months to attempt to go near it. bless her now she roosts on it at night and is adorable. she isn't a caged bird though she obviously has a cage so all her toys and bars are outside of it. lately since Christmas she has become much happier in her self. my beautiful girl Boo.

    I think my cockatiels will love these toys! I've made them a few crochet toys (basically little hacky-sacks filled with seeds) and they love to stick their beaks between the yarn to get at the food. It will be good to have a few other foraging ideas.

      My father ended up making non of the things shown in this video,probably because of the availability of those materials or how hard it is to clean the bird waste off them.Maybe I should make them one day or something

    We've been having budgies for 5 years now. And we had some in the past too. I stumbled upon the term 'forging' and didn't know what it was. Then I read a description and watched some tutorial video's. A few days ago I thought all birds are just hyperactive and it's normal. Because here our budgies randomly play with the same toy for hours, making the same movement over and over again (separating a button from a wood by pulling the button and attached string and releasing it). I never understood what they wanted to get out of that. It's just a toy my mom made for them. Now I understand they want to spend their energy to looking for food. It's stupid I didn't know of this earlier. I'll work on it first thing in the morning and I already know they'll be happy.

    • @hordygurdy
      @hordygurdy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only do it when I have just cleaned the cage, so there aren't any poops yet. and of course that is foraging! They love it! But after one day, when there are some feces on the floor, they have already eaten all the seeds.

    Question: as I have a bunch of apple and pear trees that need to be clipped soon, would it be a good idea to provide my couple of budgies with some small branches of them? Just to make toys out of it and for climbing purpose (they have a pretty big cage). Should I be worried about small critters like (blood)mites and such?
    Cheers! (love your videos by the way, very informative. Subscribed).

    Hi hordygurdy, THANK YOU for sharing these amazing ideas for forging food for little birdies. I bought my first pair of budgie birds yesterday. In attempting to transfer the birds into cage i had to end up leaving the petsmart box into the cage. Now one of the bird is not leaving the box and the other one is just sitting perched, not eating .. not doing anything else much. I visit the cage often and try to interact, ease them both, offer them treats, change water; the seeds container is untouched. WHAT SHOULD I DO? PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ HELP!

    • @hordygurdy
      @hordygurdy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just let them get used to the new cage and don't bother them too much. just let them have their food visible on the bottom of the cage (not in one of those feeders where they have to put their head through a hole)...

      Alright, Thanks a TON! I did hear the one hiding away in box chirping up whenever they realize i am not in the room or around. The other one, neatened up its feathers and familiarized itself with food containers. But majorly they are both just sitting uptight n scared. I think letting them be and giving them some time is the key........ Thanks a ton again :) :D :) I feel my birdies will be fine :) :)

      For my cockatiel, I don’t feed him on the ground. He has a foraging box for treats and seed, but he only gets that when he’s on his play stand outside if his cage. I don’t like having stuff at the bottom of the cage because I don’t not like the idea of having to change the papers often because they have poop; I would be wasting so much food! I put his daily food in the bowls that came with his cage, but I cover it up with shredded paper so that he must forage for it.

    • @hordygurdy
      @hordygurdy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Avrumeleh B Thank you! Well, they have always been together, and the lovebird was already friends with the parents of the blue and yellow budgies, so they got used to each other from the beginning. :) And now they love spending time together and feeding each other... :)

      +hordygurdy At the moment, I'm working on making a decision to get a bird (or even possibly two.) I'm gravitating toward a parakeet because I've had them in the past and I really enjoyed that, but lovebirds always did attract me so I've considered that too.

    • @hordygurdy
      @hordygurdy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always liked parakeets best, but since I have my lovebird I am completely in love with him. He is so much fun, better than parakeets. So I would give them a chance! ;) But get it young so that you have to hand feed him... Otherwise they are too scared of everything.

      LuluFox AJ I am obviously not the channel owner but wanted to answer so you got a reply! Yes, budgies need baths. Most like to bathe in a shallow dish with warm water (not too hot or too cold). Mine use a square plastic or glass dish and I fill it about an inch deep. I have seen budgies use their water dish to bathe in when they felt like taking a dip!
      Some budgies also love to bathe using large, wet pieces of lettuce (like romaine or similar). Every bird is different. Some may prefer to be misted or even sprayed in a shower. I bathe mine about once every ten days to two weeks, more when its hot or they are molting. .
      As far as clipping wings, there is no right answer. I keep mine fully flighted, as its great exercise and I have the room. However, you must be sure to have your home bird proofed and safe from dangers (especially open windows, doors that lead outside that are opened frequently, toilet bowl lids closed, no deep water containers, away from poisonous plants, not near the kitchen especially when cooking on the stovetop, away from predatory pets like cats, etc). You will find as many opinions on clipping as you will bird owners, so speak to your ver, do some research on the pros and cons, and decide for yourself. And if you choose to clip, learn from an experienced avian vet or budgie owner before you do it yourself (if you choose to do it yourself).
      I hope this answered your questions!

    Me gusta la idea de poner videos en ingles para la gente que no pueda entenderlos :) si haces esto en todos tus videos por ejemplo en un video donde salgas hablando normal y con subtitulos en ingles vas a ganar muuchos mas suscritores!!

      Salma AA jeje gracias... si, por ahora he hecho 3 en inglés, que son los que tengo en los que menos hablo... jajaja si salgo yo hablando es mas rollo, pero si, puedo subtitularlo... ;)

    WARNING about leaving dishes of sand as foraging option, yes they love it BUT my budgie died a painful death coz he ate too much sand and it blocked his insides, first I knew was when he struggled to poop. Xrah showed blocked insides, vet gave him laxative stuff but it didnt work n poor Minty died. Vet said if budgies have any digestive issues it can make them eat sand, if it eats too much for too long this happens.
    forage toys are good idea but be aware of safety n if ur bird looks tk be eating the sand or grit take the dish out n dont put it back.

    Hola hordygurdy!!!me gustan mucho tus video,pero tengo una duda,espero que me la puedas resolver :)Yo tengo un periquito,ya le tengo domesticado,el caso es que le quiero comprar una periquita ,pero no quiero que tengan hijos,porque mis padres no me dajan mas :(,he leido que si no les pones el nido no crian,,pero creo que puede ser malo?,tambien me gustaria saber si se les puede quitar los hijos para regalarles.Muchas gracias :)

    • @hordygurdy
      @hordygurdy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javivi Gomez Si no le pones nido no van a criar, y van a estar mucho mas contentos juntos que solos.
      Y si tuvieras hijos en un futuro, los podrias regalar cuando ya sean grandes (1 mes y medio aprox), igual que yo hice con todos los mios... ;) Pero si no les pones nido no criaran, asi q no te preocupes... :)

Me podrias dar algun consejo ? Gracias
