- It’s becoming more common for couples to choose the gender of their child. Some families are paying huge sums to have a daughter or a son. Others are surprised to learn they have that choice in the course of getting fertility procedures like IVF. CNBC's Chrissy Farr explains.

I think it's a fantastic idea to choose your baby's gender. This would really help solve the over population crisis. Alot of 3rd and fourth babies are born because couples would say lets have another baby and this time we want to get a boy/girl but end up with the same gender again.

There is nothing unethical about this. Especially about designer babies. Everyone wants their children to have the best opportunities, health etc. I would go far and say that it's unethical to not use gene editing to eliminate diceases and possible health problems. How is it ethical to have a child knowing they could have loved a healthier life?
What about purely aesthetic changes? Rich parents would in the future be able to have perfectly designed baby's, while poorer children would then become seconds rate citizens even more, putting them at a predetermined disadvantage and leaving them prone to bullying. But yeah to eliminate diseases and harmful genes definitely

Beauty is evaluated by comparing to others, so if rich children are engineered to be handsome, poor children will seem less handsome by default. Also, what are the societal upsides to having more beatiful people?
A lot of people who do ivf just say pick the best embryos the absolute highest quality ones. I'd do it in a heart beat.
choosing your childs gender doesn't mean you can choose your childs character. if you gender select because you want to experience what its like to raise children of both genders i get that. most people who want children would like a mixture of boys and girls to get a balance. but if you want to gender select because you want to have a little girl to dress her up in pink tutus and to have a little mini me thats worrying because you can't say what your daughter will be like, what she'll be into and thats putting a lot of pressure on your girl as yet unborn to be what you want her to be. this little girl of yours might be a tomboy. victoria beckham said at one stage that her long awaited daughter harper was always playing football in the garden with her brothers and dad and it broke her heart to see her little girl be a tomboy and a daddys girl. equally a lot of fathers say they want a son to take him to the football. sam faires partner said he was really upset that his two year old son didn't want to kick a ball around. like in billy elliot when the dad said lads do football, boxing not ballet but thats what he wanted to do. mothers and daughters can be best friends or can be completely different characters and you cant choose what your child would be like regardless of gender

There is no certainty but the VAST MAJORITY of girls are girly, specially if they aren't growing around 4 or 5 older brothers like the Beckham's child. So, yes, the chances are very high that you will get a girly girl. In my family we are 19 girls (cousins) with the exception of two, all are girly girls and those two are also very feminine but not so girly. So, nothing is 100% in life but You have to study the PROBABILITIES and in this case, having a girly girl or a boyish boy are by far highter than not.
It usually depends on who they are raised around. More girly people or more boyish people ? I was a tomboy even though I only had sisters..however my older sisters were also not girly. We aren't super girly still, but we are regular straight women with children of our own now, we aren't tomboys anymore.

I don't know why people become uneasy about gene editing/selection. If you have the ability to make sure your child has the genes that best ensure they will live a prosperous and happy life it would be selfish and cruel not to endow a baby with those traits. Intelligence in particular is becoming increasingly important in an ever advancing economy. Assuming intelligence is largely a genetic trait allowing a child to come into the world without a minimum level of intelligence would basically ensure that such an individual would be relegated to a life of poverty. Is that really a good thing?
Because god or evolution already did that, depending on what you believe, and human are CONSTANTLY correcting themselves. "Oops, we were wrong". For example, dentist have been telling you how great fluroide is amd put it on your teeth and inthe water, and noooooooow its declared so bad there was a huge court battle between drs and people of the usa vs the GOVERNMENT over it and WON. Gene editing is bad and in time youll see that, or you wont. But the evidence is left to the future so you CAN NOT say it is safe.....has never been proven. No study longer than.....literally a short short trial of less than a year

For some, it may be genetic reasons. Maybe they have a condition that’s more prominent in one gender and want to ensure their offspring doesn’t inherit that.
sounds selfish of me to say but i want my first born child to be a male so that he can inherit my family name. i'm the last one to carry it since i don't have any male siblings. my own grandfather was kinda disappointed that i wasn't a male sooo i guess i'm just doing this for him and myself (his mindset of this had changed over the years btw and i know that he loved me nonetheless). as for my other kids, it'd be natural.

When I was about 6 months pregnant with my DD I had a dream that DH and I got to see and hold this precious little girl for a moment and then we understood we had to let her go back until she was done growing but we would be with her again soon. I still remember how sweet that dream felt. Thanks for the positive energy

My boyfriend and I started talking about IVF. He only ever wanted his one child and his one child always wanted to be a loner kid. But now 3 years together he said if we can do IVF and get a boy we can do it which is fine by me because I always wanted a boy.

I wonder if this can be used to prevent ADHD and learning disabilities like auditory processing. I have both and I would preferably not want any kids I have to have it.
Most learning disabilities are do to the mother's poor choices, like while he's pregnant, whether or not she breastfed (breastfeeding is important for brain development), and the type/quality of the food she want consuming while pregnant and breastfeeding, also the diet of the child during the his early years are important.
That might be harder to figure out because ADHD might be a combination of many different genes, and also may be influenced by your environment.
@@Boddah. This makes absolutely no sense. It's definitely a genetic condition. My mom has ADHD and therefore I also do. We are from Brazil and we dont eat fast food (close to never), only real food, mostly organic and farm grown, specially in the 80's when I was conceived. In the country breastfeeding is the option for almost 90% of the mothers. In the 80's probably 99% and we breatsfeed for loooooong (an average of 2 years). I have being breastfed until 2 years old, my sister, until 4.5 years old... And most ADHA I know have same history.

Doesn't it sound irresponsible for parents to rely on luck of the draw and let your baby inherit and grow up with some hereditary disease, when you as the parent have the power to prevent that and basically ensure that your baby is as healthy as possible

Girl or boy and we didn't trust in god or i didn't trust in your farther or maybe you do choose a gender and get that boy or girl and they tell when that get older they are in the wrong body. It is immoral only if you are cloning humans. However, to make human healthier and live longer, now that is good for mankind. A healthy person is less likely to feel depress and do stupid things, and is better at adapting to the world he/she is living in, and can make more positive contribution to societies.
you're assuming you know the experiences of a human being who has been born throughthese technologies- how that person feels about their conception is what you do not know, therefore you cannot assert what that person will feel ie. depressed about it. That child may not have the resources to adapt to the world they live in since they aren't like the majority of us- how do YOU know what their experiences will be like?

Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin after a lifetime of fighting got cool results with it.
I also had pgs screend ivf in Cyprus with donor eggs they dont only screen for the gender but also for genetic abnormalities so we opted for this. Thanks to Dr Vedat.

I’ve dreamed of.. I’ve always wanted... ME, ME, ME! What about when the superficial wants of parents eventually lead to the destruction of the human species? Yes this is for the benefit of children that can inherit a life altering disease/illness, but unfortunately even then, people will find loopholes that make any possible health issue a cleared reason to selfishly choose genders. Reality is, making everyone’s dreams come true isn’t going to make the world a better place. This would backfire inconceivably. We aren’t above feeling the disappointment, struggle and pain that comes along with living here. Mother nature/whatever knows what it’s doing. People think we can solve problems, we just create them and ruin things. Let’s not speed up that process even more than we have for humanity by normalizing this.

My blood group is very rare and not supported to exist anymore, there are less than 120 people in the world with it in 2006. The God within us desires to have the most healthy offspring as possible to live a better life rid of genetic diseases etc. We're evolving as a species and if we have the opportunity to improve lives we should strive for that rather than leave it to chance.

LagiNaLangAko23 in western counties the majority choose girls, about 80% of couples choose to have girls and the rest boys, but yes in Middle Eastern country’s that would be the other way round.
So we are far from the end because you can just google the human demographics to see that the whole world is very close to 50-50%. And in India and China there are more boys than girls.

Why would you want to choose the gender of your baby in the first place? Not all girls are feminine, not all guys are masculine. You shouldn't raise your child to be one or the other either, let them be themself. And intersex people are a whole other topic. Plus, no matter how you raise them, they may identify as the opposite gender or non-binary. Please just treat your kid like a person, not like a boy or a girl. The only difference is genitals and hormones. People aren't defined by gender.

My Sister felt the same way before she had her kids. She has 1 boy 1 girl. The girl is a daddies girl closer to her father and their relationship as mother and daughter is not great. Her son is a mummies boy and they are very close. My sister admitted to me she was wrong to feel that way about having a boy. You assume you would be happier with a girl than a boy but you don't know that until it happens.

I think you should just deal with it. Also, I feel as though many mothers would rather have a girl than a boy, but that is just me I suppose. I don't think we should change our babies gender.
