Remember when their drummer was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame at age 37? Those were the golden years.
I think you guys are finally realizing how much of a bad ass John Petrucci is now.

Anesthetize might be the one completely prog metal song that Vince could possibly have *NO* issues at all with whatsoever: all of the "good" stuff he likes and none of the more "meandering" qualities everything there has a clear purpose and just works, yet it's still very long, intricate, etc.
EDIT: also the live version is possibly even better than even the recording.

If they decide to listen the The Glass Prison make sure to listen in this order; 1. TGP, 2. This Dying Soul, 3. The Root of all Evil, 4. Repentance and 5. The Shattered Fortress, otherwise the lyrics won’t make sense.

@@genesisalves5474 well not really, he made very basic drum tracks, then mangini came in and did his thing
John Petrucci ( guitar ) and John Myung ( bass ) are childhood friends and they decided to go to university together where they found Mike Portnoy ( ex-drummer ) and they decided to start a band. James La’Brie ( vocals ) came in the band during their second album , Images and words (1991) and the keyboardist, Jordan Rudess , who studied at Juliard, cane in the band in 1999 when they made Metropolis pt.2, their best album imo. Mike Mangini (current drummer) joined the grup in 2010 when Portnoy left the band (the audition has been recorded and is available on TH-cam under the “Spirit caries on” series name).
Myung, he's not on Gass :p ;D But he pushes bass like pedal to the metal :).
Their first keyboard player, Kevin Moore, also was from the school where Petrucci & Myung went to growing up.
Must be something in the water on Long Island, NY, since Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, & bassist Randy Coven also grew up on LI (different town than Dream Theater, but all 3 grew up in the same neighborhood).
John Petrucci and Kevin Moore were Childhood friends, they met Mike Portnoy & John Myung at Berklee College.
Should be mentioned that at the time of joining Mangini was a percussion professor at Berklee School of Music, the same school Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy went to when they formed the band.

Imagine saying Petrucci plays with no feel... You might not like his fast solos, but saying he has no feel is just wrong. Also, Seeing him play them live is insane.

Vin, the fact you appreciate the musicianship is enough. Most people don't have the patience for a lot of prog rock or metal because of those marathon instrumental segments in the songs. Especially when it starts to stray from the verses and chorus. I for one am a long time fan of it, but I also see your point where too much can be too much. I agree though, seeing the song performed live gives you a broader perspective, and usually a better experience.
Please do an album listen of Metropolis Pt 2 from Dream Theater. It is their masterpiece!

I think thats the perfect album for vin. There's not really "Crazy" instrumentals all the time and whenever there is it has a clear theme and is easily connected with the song it's in, like the solos in Home. They stick with a kind of middle eastern vibe throughout the whole song even through the instrumental parts. I dont think he would like the dance of eternity though for obvious reasons but everything else i think he would enjoy.

They would totally get engrossed in unraveling the story too. It’s some of the best writing and James executes it all so well. And yeah...the musicality is insane.
This is the greatest Dream Theater song they ever made. I've listened to this track a billion times and I still haven't gotten sick of it.

Man, I was at that show. It was such an incredible night! I've seen them live a lot, but this night will forever be one of my most memorable.
I've watched a lot of dream theatre react, and you guys did a great job here, a genuine review/react with a lot of thoughts into it, which dream theatre songs are deserved. (with no pause in the middle of the song)
This song is marvelous. Everyone complains about DT losing their essence after Portnoy left the band. Well, this proves the contraire

This album has all solid songs.
Well technically this album was written when Portnoy was still in the band. That's why Mangini contributed nothing to the album because it was already written.

Mike Mangini - 3 and a win. All of those came with Dream Theater. Portnoy got zero.
I love Portnoy, but the facts are the facts.
John Petrucci (guitar), Mike Portnoy (drums and no longer in the band since 2010) and John Myung (bass) went in to Berklee College of Music and founded Majesty in 1985 (later changed to Dream Theater). Juilliard is the music school that Jordan Rudess (keyboards, joined Dream Theater 1999) went to when he was only 11. The drummer here is Mike Mangini and joined Dream Theater in 2010. Pretty much all of these musicians are gods among them.

This song is arguably their best since Octavarium, and definitiely their best Mangini-era song. A true modern classic.

"Illumination Theory" is also a good song too, especially the live version from the Breaking the Fourth Wall DVD set. It's the same concert from this song but it also includes a live choir and orchestra from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the same college some of the band members attended.
I’ve seen Dream Theater live 6 times. The last time I saw them I took my ex (my daughter’s mum) when we were still together (we’re still friends), it was the Images, Words & Beyond tour 2017. John Petrucci played the guitar intro to this song, I’m rocking out, my ex taps me on the shoulder... “didn’t we conceive our daughter to this?”.
From what I understand about this song it's about having an awakening to the truth about religious ideas written into the mind as a child. Coming to the understanding of the truth is like a supernova going off in the mind exposing a new truth. Drawn to the curses left behind refers to the doctrine that was deeply wired into the mind. It takes a long time to keep those beliefs from coming back in certain situations like when someone you love gets hurt you're first response is to pray to God to save them even though it's not part of your belief system anymore. Keep walking the emerald rode on the journey to the truth. Stay on the path and new and wonderful things will open up to you.
Seeing these guys live is a mind-blowing experience and I get to do it again in March ... 4th row!
Portnoy(drums), Petrucci (guitar)and Myung (bass) went to Berklee in Boston NYC together. LaBrie (singer) was added later and is Canadian. Rudess (keys) joined in the late 90's. Mangini joined in 2010 after Portnoy left - he was a professor at Berklee at the time.

In 1985, Dream Theater began as Majesty after longtime bandmates Petrucci and Myung arrived at Berklee in search of a drummer who was into progressive rock and metal. They heard Portnoy in a practice room and soon began jamming together. The trio would become the core of one of rock's most virtuosic and heavy bands. After leaving Berklee, the group added a vocalist and keyboard player and changed its name to Dream Theater. Current vocalist LaBrie is the band's third singer and the best fit. His agile voice snarls on the metal tune "The Dark Eternal Night" and then soars sweet and high on the power ballad "The Ministry of Lost Souls" (both from Systematic Chaos). I have seen Dream Theater live 3 times. Yes Dream Theater does complicated songs, sometimes very technical, sometimes truly soulful but in conclusion; I can not tell you how unbelieveable to see that magic happens right in front of your eyes.

Dream Theater is what you get when your band forms at a prestigious music school. So happy they chose to play metal.
Vin makes a great point on seeing them live first. Some of the more intricate songs overwhelmed me when I first tried Dream Theater and I quickly moved on to other music. Then in 2005 or so I randomly bought their Budokan live DVD because my friend wouldn't shut up about them. After watching that DVD, Dream Theater redefined my musical interests in a way that only Metallica did before that. 13 years later DT is still my favorite band and now I understand how ignorant I was before when I thought their music lacked soul. I can easily say they evoke far more feelings in me than any other band. The climax of this song as the lyrics end nearly brings me to tears. Just have to be willing to go on a journey, at least in the case of their longer epics.
PS: Great lyrical analysis. You just made the song even better for someone who already thinks of it as a masterpiece. Fun fact, both this and Fall Into The Light have lyrics written by the bassist John Myung, which is rare for DT. Love his lyrical concepts though!
You are watching the Pinnacle of musicians. Period. I am an avid musician, and these guys are the king of kings in music. (Not just my opinion either)...

Prog Metal: Think of it like Pink Floyd meets Yes with an edge but when you are new or casually listening it is hard to figure out and can be very jarring. Turn down the lights, put on the headphones, relax, pick an instrument and just follow it along through the song. Before long you will be like "why is the dude singing??, lets get to that interlude!!"
Dream Theatre is the best band I have watched live. Like Vin said, having all virtuosos in each instrument absolutely killing their instruments for 3 hours straight is just unparalleled. Relentless. After I watched them live, I realised their name better. They take you in a dream in a theatrical fashion. Just like a movie or theatre score is not always the most enjoyable as an audio album (especially if you have NEVER watched the movie or theatre), this is similar. The live 'act' is critical to appreciating what they are trying to convey. Dream Theater's (like Rush's) true genius and sound can only be fully experienced and understood from watching them live (or their live videos).
There are so much playbacks
I may get blasted for this, but I've always thought it. In music we really don't reward the most talented people. If you think about football and the best athletes, they get the recognition they deserve. I would argue that prog musicians are at the top of the musical game, but are only considered niche and really don't get the praise they deserve for mastering their instruments. In fact, the more simplistic radio artists are the ones getting all the accolades. It's backwards to me.
taffer I think there are a lot of talented musicians outside of prog (just look at Chester Bennington, he’s always been looked at as one of the best vocalists in the world), but prog tends to be the genre that by its very nature REQUIRES talent to be successful in, so we see a much higher ratio of talent to non-talent in it.

The old saying holds true here... The rock musician plays three chords in front of three thousand people and the jazz musician plays three thousand chords in front of three people. Dream theater is a nice combination.
Under a Glass Moon is (dare I say) a criminally underrated song. It's so damn good, and I rarely ever see anyone mention it. This song is so worthy of a reaction video, and I'd also like to see you two try to decipher the lyrics in this song.
John Petrucci, John Myung (bass) and the former drummer Mike Portnoy met a Berklee College of Music in Boston and started Dream Theater there. Mike Mangini was a professor of percussion at Berklee (I think). Jordan Rudess (keyboards) grew up being a classically trained pianist. All have quite a pedigree being professionally trained but they all loved rock and metal and brought they're talents to that genre. 😎

Berkeley School of Music is where the Guitarist and the original Drummer met. All of the members are formerly trained. Their current drummer was a music professor at Berkeley.

To answer your question, Mike Portnoy (original drummer), John Petrucci (Guitarrist) and John Myung (bassist) met at Berkley in the first semester when they were like 18 and started it from there.. then dropped college at the second semester to fully work on DT..
Iron Maiden Revelations, 22 Acadia Avenue or Sea of Madness. Perhaps Remember Tomorrow or Killer's from the early years.

The reason why I think Peteucci is the top guitarist today is his versatility. He possesses a (very) rare gift among guitarists in that he can shred as good as anyone, but he also can play simple, tasteful licks, he can play soulfully with emotion, and he can riff like a beast. Hes the complete package.

Wow, I've never seen a reaction to this song..and I loved it! Yeah, I think live reactions for Dream Theater are the way to go :) (I just recommend you NOT do the Wacken live performances). Budokan, "Breaking the Fourth Wall" and "Score" performances are a good way to go.
Didn't expect that you'd pick this song. It is one of my favorite DT songs. If you want some more of their mind boggling live performances, please check out The Dance of Eternity or The Spirit Carries On.
Btw, A Change of Seasons and The Count of Tuscany are great songs too. Though studio versions bother you, you'll like them.

I really appreciate that you guys took the time to break down the lyrical content, as you envisioned it. I wondered why the video length was so much longer than the song until I watched further. Music, as great as it is, to me is only half of the book (the music being the binding, covers and pages, which are needed for any book but are empty and waiting for the listener to fill in the words as they feel) and the lyrics are obvious. As one closes the final page to any book, now it's up to the reader [listener] to take away from the endeavor what is or is not meaningful to themselves. The fact that you both took the time to tell me what you took from the song speaks volumes (pun intended) about your intent when you began the song, and that will make me come back, again. Thanks for listening (and, actually hearing) my favorite band of all time.

When people that play musical instruments listen to music they aren't bored by it, but see it being played in their mind's eye. If they're good enough they can figure out for example what position on the guitar neck something is being played so they can try it themselves later ( I'm not that good ). So, rather than concentrate on lyrics full of metaphors which can be studied later, for the first listen they will be gauging how good the musicianship is, and waiting for the guitar solo, which is like going on an adventure determined by which notes are chosen, and how well they are played.
Great song, performed to perfection by one of the most skilled bands of all time!
Progressive rock requires a very special type of listener! Most are creative, intelligent, and open to suggestion! Those people who can’t relate to the music are usually close minded, opinionated, uninformed, and short on intelligence!!
A Change of Seasons (Metropolis 2000 Live), watching it live is another experience.
Those moments at around 7 minutes are homages to other bands, namely Jethro Tull and Yes (I think). They did put them together a bit better in the studio. version
I'm glad to see y'all doing more DT recently. Especially live! They're just as good live as in studio. (vocals can be off occasionally, but mostly on point) They're truly masters of their craft. Not all of their songs are overly Proggy. The album, "Train of Thought" is one of their heaviest metal albums they have put out.
