    Her father and mentor seem like spectacular men! What a lady. I am especially inspired that she THANKED her attacker for how it helped her keep going. It's hard to turn a negative into a positive and it is something that really resonates.

    And the anti feminists women of today have no idea what other women have gone through. Being grabbed and pulled back or pushed was very common back in the day. If she didn't have her boyfriend with her that body checked that jerk, she would have been on the ground.

      @@MrKrushgutz Did you just completely disregard OP's mention of the boyfriend? This is not the most productive way to alleviate your feelings of insecurity. Instead of projecting your issues onto others, which will only continue to result in failure, maybe work on them first. Attention seeking is not the appropriate way to do that and this is awfully transparent for anyone with critical thinking skills or interpersonal/emotional intelligence.

    • @normanlinden5786
      @normanlinden5786 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AllenMQuinn -- Switzer first ran in 1967 where she had the famous incident with the BAA's Jock Semple trying to yank her off of the course. According to the BAA's records, Roberta Gibb was the unofficial winner in 1966, '67, and '68. Sara Mae Berman was the unofficial winner in 1969, '70 and '71. The first officially sanctioned women's race was in 1972 and was won by Nina Kuscsik. If BAA officials had known that Switzer was a female in 1967 when she submitted her entry in 1967 using her first and middle initials, she would not have been issues a number. My ultimate point is that many people think Switzer was the first woman to run in, and complete the Boston Marathon, either officially or unofficially, but she wasn't.

    She is definitely an important player in the history of women's sports. However, it's important to note that women had already run the Boston Marathon unofficially starting in 66. Bobbi Gibb finished a full hour faster than Switzer in 67, finishing first, and was the first female finisher in 66. Also, media representation of Jock Semple can be a bit misleading. He was fine with a woman running the marathon route as that was a provision already in place. He was not OK with a woman using a loophole to officially enter an official men's race. Jock was known to treat other race "disruptions" in the same volatile manner. This video makes it look like women weren't allowed to run at all, that Switzer would be the first to run the route, and that Jock was trying to get a "damn woman" out of his race. This video seems historically inaccurate on certain points.

      So women are “allowed” to participate as long as they stay in the shadows and doesn’t get recognition as being official racers. They can run but not allowed to win. So it’s Rosie the riverter yet all over again. They take the women out of the kitchen into the factory then force them back when the men returns and keep them there. They give you enough to dream but yank it back when you wake up. No matter what it was sexist

      I'm not sure what you say is also very accurate. With your comment it looks like women were "allowed" and even had done it and the problem here was that she used a loophole but it doesnt seem to be the case.
      In 1966 Gibbs was denied running saying that women were not fit to run,.
      Same that this amazing woman's coach told her.
      Until 1972 there was not a real possibility for a woman to actually sign for a marathon.
      Boston Athletic Association director Will Cloney-who had rejected Bobbi Gibb's entry into the 1966 Boston Marathon giving as his reason his claim that women could not run that far-was asked his opinion of Switzer competing in the race. Although Gibb had completed the marathon the previous year with a good time, the race rule book made no mention of gender, and Switzer had a valid race registration,[3] Cloney said: "Women can't run in the Marathon because the rules forbid it. Unless we have rules, society will be in chaos. I don't make the rules, but I try to carry them out. We have no space in the Marathon for any unauthorized person, even a man. If that girl were my daughter, I would spank her."[7

    • @martaxiaoping1261
      @martaxiaoping1261 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      After Switzer's completion of the Boston Marathon as a registered entrant, the AAU changed its rules: it barred women from all competitions with male runners, with violators losing the right to compete in any race.[21] Switzer, with other female runners, tried to convince the Boston Athletic Association to allow women to participate in the marathon. Finally, in 1972, the Boston Marathon established an official women's race.[4]
