  • 27-year-old Tucson-based nurse and distance runner Sarah Sellers trains every day - but unlike many runners who dominate the big races, she (until recently) wasn’t a professional runner and had only run one marathon when she entered the best-known race in the country…and placed second in the Boston Marathon earlier this year.

Ok to give this perspective, 4th place is a teacher and 5th place is a full time nurse. They were also as shocked as Sarah.

Great story (video)! As someone who has been a CRNA for about 35 years, run about 10 marathons, and competed in almost 200 triathlons, I believe I have a small 'window' into what you have accomplished. I never competed anywhere near your level, but I have followed, know, and admired marathon runners for a long time. I am excited to follow your success, and hope you continue to run with the full passion that has propelled you this far. I wish you the best in your anesthesia career! It can be equally rewarding. I'm looking forward to hearing about your next big race!

I remember this really well. I had just started running and Sarah's acheivement inspired me to keep training and pushing up the distances. In the beginning I hated it but now I get it. I understand a lot more why people love running. I am sure I am not the only person Sarah inspired to start the sport.

My first race was a cold rainy day in december, I had been sick the week before with migraines and didn't train. I was super nervous about people seeing me run, or not running well, but I went and even with 3 small walk breaks I ended up 3rd in my age group and a PR, which was totally unexpected. I made myself go for the experience and told myself, just run.

@bretzky that's cutting corners a bit, in these weather conditions, there is more at play then pure speed and endurance.. how well can the body deal with the the cold and rain is a very big factor, and Sarah obviously was better that day!! I think this is a wonderfull inspiring story, but don't go shaming the other pro athletes..

i was jst logged into the race via internet and I wasn't expecting much excitement for me (I'm in Germany, and just a runner). But then elites dropped one by one, and suddenly you knew that these conditions will enable others to make podium. Well. Goosebumps. Thats what people don't get that don't run. The excitement, the community, and how you can identify with someone achieving something unbelievable. Gunhild Swanson anyone? Cheers!

Well, she obviously is awesome. This specific year many of the elites I think chose not to run in the conditions which is why she got a podium spot of 2nd. When she ran the race in 2019 she placed 19th and 13 minutes behind the leader. With the time she ran and got 2nd, she wouldn't have placed even in the top 50 women in a normal race. Good thing she chose to run this race so she could get some attention and hit the pro circuit with a boom.

Her running form and foot strike are perfect. That's how the human foot is engineered to function AND to contact the ground. That initial outside "touch" maps the terrain, sending that information to the brain, which coordinates balance. Your running store is trying to sell you shoes that have been marketed to control your feet and your stride, when what you really want is a "shoe" that simply protects you from being poked or cut. You don't really need anything else. If you want to see how the human form runs correctly, simply go to the park or the beach, take off your shoes, (leave your socks on if you like), and go for a 5min "jog". You will instantly run with near perfect form. Of course there will always be things you can do to dial in your form and make it better....for example, learning how to race fast, hill climb, sprint, etc......but overall, you will instantly have correct form. If you would like to learn more, watch the videos by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella th-cam.com/video/zSIDRHUWlVo/w-d-xo.html Please note: he's running barefoot ONLY to better display for the camera, how the human body runs. He IS NOT attempting to get people to run barefoot.

As a guy who ran for 30 years, my advice is to run for health and unless you have some talent, run for nothing else. That means that in all likelihood you should not run marathons. Not even one. As Sarah says, she seems to always been on the verge of injury. That is not a wise running philosophy unless there is something tangible to run a marathon for other than a tee shirt. You will know if you have running talent because if you are under the age of 35 you can go out the door and in very modest physical condition run a sub 7 minute mile. If you are huffing and puffing to do a 10 minute mile, welcome to the land of ordinary plodders, which is 98% of the running population. Train and build up your stamina and leg strength and run 4 miles a day 4 or 5 days a week. Never any more than that. If the tee shirts are really nice, pay the $12 and run a 10K. But only if the tee shirts are decent.

Haha. I used to think runners were nuts! I got talked into joining one of those crazy relay team runs. Ran my first prep 5k just after my 40th birthday. Surprised myself, ended up being the second strongest runner on our team.
Got hooked on running. Worked up to a half marathon. It kind of hurt. Thought why would you ever want to go twice as far in a race. But couldn’t resist the challenge.
Long story short, ten years and 19 marathons later, I ran my last marathon in Huntsville Utah. The same one that was Sarah’s first.
Wishing now I’d paid more attention to the winners and had her autograph my bib that day. Haha

@@hankdaniels7384 The oddest runner's story I can think of comes courtesy of my sister, Helen. This was about 35 years ago. Helen was in her mid 30s. She was not overweight but she was a sedentary person who smoked about two packs of cigarettes a day. She decided that she would run in the Columbus Marathon. Helen quit smoking and began the long process of physical conditioning. She started off running a few hundred yards at a turtle's pace. In about three months she was doing 5 miles at about 12-minute mile pace 5 times a week. My sister made it to the big day uninjured and as ready to go as she would ever be. I was on the marathon routine at about the 15-mile mark. About 3 hours after the start of the race, Helen plodded by me, looking okay, all things considered. I then drove to the finish line and watched her cross about a nearly 6 hours after the start. Late that afternoon I wondered how Helen was doing so I traveled over to her house. She was sitting on her front porch smoking a cigarette.
"A cigarette!? What the hell is going on?" I blurted.
"My goal was to run in the marathon, and I did," my sister explained, taking a puff on the Viceroy cigarette between her fingers. "I'm done.
To this day she has never run another step, and she still smokes.

90 miles a week, that is incredible. I got up to 34 miles while training for a marathon and that was a stress on my body. But then again I weigh 180# 5ft 9in, way too stocky for long distance running. I enjoy the 5k and 10k runs, shorter and easier to train for.

Disagree - I ran my first race as an adult which also my first marathon in 2010 at age of 53 - took 5 hour and 7 mins - 7 and a half months later, I completed my 5th marathon with a time of 3,31 minutes, Since have completed 27 marathons with half of them on mountains - I run not specifically for health but for the love of running. I run shorter distances but my love first would be for the marathon with my focus being on trails and mountains - yes I have had injury issues since I started racing but have dealt with them so far by exercises to deal with existing muscular imbalances and with occasional physio. Next year at age 62, I hope to run my first ultra - why ? I am curious and I think I can do it - and at age 62 what else would I be doing ??? Worrying about my age and dying ? No thanks...I'm off for a run

@@amblincork There are always people who do not fit any normal profile. After all, there really are masochists. And running for one's health can very possibly include mental health. But I think I was referring primarily to those who run because they think it's cool, or because their girlfriend (or their prospective girlfriend) runs. And I was targeting those who go overboard and tear-up a knee or screw-up a hip at age 50 because their body was not well suited for running huge distances at that age.

Who was "stunned" by a woman running 2:44:04 when she ran 2:44:27 just 7 months earlier on a hot day? BTW, she ran Boston again this year in 2:36:42 - and placed 19th. Getting 2nd in Boston last year was a fluke.

I love this story. I’ve never paid much attention to the Boston Marathon results or any other distance races for that matter, but that day when I heard about Sarah Sellers, a relative unknown, taking 2nd at Boston, her story captured me. I stopped whatever I was doing on that day of the marathon and watched all the news stories about her that day. She is such a great inspiration, not just for athletes, but for everyone as an example of what humans can accomplish with motivation and discipline. Most of us never come close to reaching our potential in life, but here is a young woman that works in a demanding and stressful occupation all day and then goes home and puts herself through a challenging workout, either after work or at 4am in the morning. How can you not admire that type of dedication? Because of Sarah, I’ve started working out again (I will be 63 years old tomorrow) and there are mornings when I wake around 4am and really don’t want to get out of bed but many times I’ll think, “OK, Sarah is getting ready to hit the road for a workout so I have no excuse for staying in bed.” That’s been enough motivation to get me going on my workouts on mornings when I’m not motivated. I look forward to following her future successes.

@@JoeARedHawk275 1) I've never said anything negative about her, but I have stated facts. 2) By your standards, NO ONE is a "full-time" runner. Even if you're running 100 miles a week, that's only 10-12 hours a week of running (for an elite runner). 3) You obviously are unaware that she trains as much as any other world-class runner. 4) Training in heat in NO WAY deters you from being able to run well in the cold. Sarah
You come from Doug Padilla and Paul Cummings Country....Utah!
And by the way my training partner, Duncan Macdonald was US 5km record holder, multi winner of Hawaii marathon and made Olympics in 3rd year Med School....became Anesthesiologists! I think he ran 2:12at boston while on call that week....goigle these guys.
Now you are among their ranks.
Big challenge is what will happen next. Real challenge. But no one ever can take 2nd at Boston off your resume.
Quick advice: 1. Forget all mileage stuff...run total TIME running not distance.
Run very slowly so your knees ache...this builds new capillary beds (I ran 2:20 by just doing nothing but that n jumped into marathon on a whim....i was fresh see..in the legs).
Then start learning about strong fartlek leading to track workouts....you cant get away from speed...it makes you tougher n faster over 40km....try winnibg some 5ks n 10ks.
    Think broadly n train wisely.
    Congrats by the way
    Everyone hobbles after boston
