@@TroysSweetCornhole I won't say coach fault. But the player need to feel like home when they are not playing. That's the most important for them actually off the court environment
Simplification to think 4 training sessions with a new coach brings Maria to semis. She has been there the last few years as well with the old coach. Performance is not magically changing within one tournament within 4 rounds. I do agree that the new coach might be a great new opportunity and a refreshing new start but it’s way way too early to say that it’s new coach results. All the best to Maria that seems to be happy on the court. 🎉

Love Sakkari. This season it's her time to shine, working with new coach David Witt, Pegula's former coach. Would like to see Maria going from strength to strength the rest of the season. Points to defend in the Miami Open are negligible as she went out in the opening round to Bianca Andreescu last year. Emma a rising star and I do hope to see more of her.
Well done for Sakkari, who really hasn't done too much lately, so hopefully the results will get her on the right track again. For Navarro, despite this tough loss, she should take a lot of confidence out of the tournament.
Actually, the clapping, waving, and blowing the kiss was meant for her big group of fans that were there supporting her . I was there, it was totally for us. There was one obnoxious dude near us, but she wasn't looking at him. The stadium wasn't full, so she was able to spot her fans easily. It's pretty impossible to miss the Greek flag. I'm just clarifying that the announcer was mistaken. It was freezing, but a great match, and well worth the shivers.
Only a small handful of WTA players has a 1st serve that is considered a weapon, and even smaller with a decent 2nd serve. Barty was a rare player who was strong in both. And no one has been ever to replicate her slice either. Pity.
It was a really high quality match from both sides, but I don't think Emma is used to this level of intensity even though she has been playing well. She already beat Sabalenka the other day, which was high intensity too.
Gosh, what a tough match.. could go either way, really. Emma has developed into an all around player, great focus and composure winning over the srceeming banchee "Lukashenko" 👍 good luck to her in the future matches!! Bravo, Maria, the Greek Goddess!! The Netflix Break Point gave me a whole lot of appreciation for your tennis career. Keep on winning!!! 🥰
Very good match to watching. I hope Coco at semifinal will not make as many double faults as yesterday. Sometimes is better to serve second serve at once than look for the ace. Coco had one ace for five double errors :)))))) Crazy.
The change of coach was very good for Maria, she clearly came back to life... And we can have an unexpected final between Sakkari and Kostyuk, because neither Cori nor Iga are in the best shape right now...
Inside-out backhand slice. You slice across the back of the ball below its center. It kicks outside and bounces twice before the opponent can chase it down. Net clearance is pretty tight and you have to swing it to get the rpms to get the kick and the quick second bounce. If you baby the shot it will float.
I’ve seen quite a few people, as well as Maria herself, saying she’s “not a naturally gifted talent” so my question is - what criteria do you use to determine that? Her technique is good and she’s clearly athletic. I’m not saying I disagree either but I’m curious to hear other people’s reasoning. Like, if you looked at her playing - what is it in her game that highlights to you that she’s not as naturally gifted as some of the other girls? Is it her hands? Do you think her strokes lack fluidity? (just to clarify, this is not hate - I’m genuinely just curious because this conversation fascinates me)
Sakkari dug deep, and both played good tennis. Maria needs to improve her drop shots or not use the shot. Bravo also to Emma who is becoming a top player.
The Wilson Ultra isn't exactly a touch racquet, though it's better than the Shift she had been using for a while. Thank goodness Maria put an end to that experiment.
@WTA Why is the video quality so much worse on the women’s coverage than the men’s? The women deserve better, let’s ask @TennisTV how they do it, k? Please 🙏🏼
Emma’s physical fitness and her game have seen an impressive evolution. The next thing to work on would be her serving. Once that is in place, better watch out. Looking for good things from her in the coming months.
I've dying for Maria to get a title. Everyone knows she's got SO MUCH potential; especially when she's down. I recall how she used to attend& watch SERENA'S matches, as she stuffed her face w food, which of course we see Maria apparently works off. That girl doesn't have 1 ounce of fat on her bod. I want her to get this title. Or COCO.
Congrats to Navarro for a great tournament. The fact that Sakkari is still in the tournament while Pegula is long gone speaks for itself. Sakkari is naturally more gifted player than Pegula. David Whit will help her achieve better results.
Very few spectators considering that Navarro is the only American left on the women's side. And her previous matches have been quite entertaining as well.
about the crowd, I'm thinking that might have been because of the bee thing earlier? people got scared, maybe? weird if not that because this was a totally amazing game. i knew i t would be, considering how they played in the previous matches.
She went back to the racquet she was using before the Wilson Shift. Going to the Shift was a huge mistake, as it's way too unstable for professional use. Great to serve with (I have one), but lousy for just about everything else from the standpoint of a pro. Flings the ball too much. A professional needs to control the ball. I wonder if the Shift experiment was why she fired the old coach.

Besides a better first serve, Navarro needs to improve her footwork. She lost at least a couple of points needlessly because she was caught wrong-footed, with her weight going the wrong way. Happens to everybody sometimes, but looked avoidable (yeah, I know, easy for me to say).
