@@ritualee10 I second that. The way it was set was wrong. I was afraid it will snap anytime, if the strings' tension were high. The violinist-owner should know better.

An elderly friend of mine has an old violin that her uncle played professionally in NYC early 1900. His mom bought it for him at his graduation. I've had two different appraisers say that it was about 250 years old. It has a gorgeous rainbowy tone and plays very evenly over all the strings. I had a professional violinist play it and afterward she took me aside and told me that I should sell everything I own to buy that violin. I played it for 14 years and then gave it back to the family as it belonged to a favorite uncle. I keep trying to get it to the roadshow so that I can get it appraised for the family but the roadshow doesn't seem interested. Sad....I would really love to know more about where it came from and who made it. It has some kind of serial # stamped on the scroll. It's a lovely old gent with a high arched one piece back.....it also comes with an old Sartory bow

    Ghendt is Flanders, Belgium

    • @richardwebb2348

Ghent is in what is now Belgium - a country established in 1831, consisting of French speaking Wallonia and Brussels in the south, and Flemish speaking Flanders in the north - an area that includes Ghent which between 1748 and 1815 was part of the Austrian Netherlands resulting from the settlement of the War of the Austrian Succession. During the 16th century, Flanders was part of the Spanish Netherlands. The Cuijpers family of violin makers, father and sons, worked primarily in The Hague, in the Netherlands. Apparently the violin appears to be Dutch, with a false label.

@MN Mitchell If you are saying you can buy a circa 1820s violin by this maker for $2,000, then I think many of us are waiting for the proof of your statement by documentation.

@MN Mitchell Not being a luthier, I'm trying to educate myself based on your comments. You say that the woman isn't an appraiser. How did you come to that conclusion? You say that "the peg box is not grafted". I'm puzzeled. What does a 'grafted" peg box look like? You say that the f holes are not fluted. What does a fluted f hole look like and how they different from what is shown here?

An inflation calculator puts the difference between the 1962 $1,200 and the 2022 value at $11,424. This is just the difference in monetary value between those to dates. The expert evaluation, considered an Expert Witness in a court of law, of $25,000 for the instrument is the more accurate of the two figures.

If you notice, in the description(above), this video was posted 4 years ago(2019)and could have been made even earlier than that, prior to posting on TH-cam. The figure she gave might be more accurate than you suggest.
