Welcome to the 8hp e36 club! I went with turbolamik because I wanted to stick with the stock ms41 dme. It is a blast to drive and encourage anyone to consider it. With that said, MaxxECU is great for a full integrated build. It is possible to run the bmw MS43 DME with DBW on a single vanos engine and run the CANTCU for OEM level of smoothness, similar to Sipa's Garage. I am planning on 8HP swapping an e60 N52 for the heck of it this winter.
Have you got any more information regarding the M52 + 8HP setup?.. I've converted a defender with a M57+8HP with CanTCU, but have an old M52 engine that I'd love to put in something with a 8HP behind...
Having that ZF8 transmission in my M235i has been a blast when it comes to daily driving; it fully saves you from that leg workout. I swear by this transmission, though. It's lightning-fast and incredibly rugged. Great video as always, Josh!
@m3nameisjosh464 I know, I bought a turbolamik setup with m60b40 adapter plate years ago myself(when cantcu wasn't an option and maxxecu not even close)...it's remarkable what the lamik Brothers achieved!
Idk if any power level specifically dictates the need for auto or manual. These 500hp cars are sometimes annoying to shift, even my e34 zf kind of sucks sometimes lol
I agree with Josh here, however an 8hp e32 with the m60 or even m70 would be bonkers. Can't imagine how the v12 mates to an auto trans that is actually capable
I have an E46 with a zf 5 speed manual and an F31 with 8hp and I absolutely love the 8hp, even in stock form the shifts are lightning fast and with XHP tune it’s even better, it kicks like a DCT in sport mode but is buttery smooth in drive, it’s the best of both worlds. I was always a manual advocate but after having one of these it’s too good not to love, but no matter how good it may be the manual still has its place and will always be the most engaging to drive. For daily driver and something with big power this is the best transmission you can get, for a weekend toy I think I would still go with a manual.
Ive honestly been looking into 8hp swapping my m60b44 e30 for a while but i do love manual 🤔 With plans to get a supercharger kit this year for it, i might end up going 8hp. But id need to keep a funtional clutch for the ability to kick it when i want
Quick question, I need some advice: If I’m running a stock ECU with an ECUMaster DET3 piggyback, how do I get the ECU to work with the TCU? I understand the current ECU gives off analog signals, but what’s the role of the MAP sensor in this setup?
Map sensor tells the trans what the engine is doing, ie, idling, full throttle, etc, based off vacuum. Stock ecu doesn’t communicate to the 8hp at all. The turbolamik tcu does everything
What about the drive shaft? Was there anything special done with that? Might have been addressed, but I'm commenting while I'm watching. Also isn't there things that need to be done to the trans? Or was that an old installation?
This called transbrake it engage 1st gear or any startting gear programed and reverse to lock the transmission in place so you can build boost or lunch it then you let the handle out and it will just disengage reverse letting you take off fast as possible really known for drag racing... Hope I helped👍♥️
8hp is really a goted transmission, im really intrested in trying one in my daily e39, but i cant do it to my e36 😅 it would be too sacrilegious, i dont know if you mentioned it in the video but a huge + is also the possibility of downshifting multiple gears at once, so from cruising in 7 to full pull in 4 in a second, it really is not at all comparable to older automatics
And also you were talking about torque converter and losing power, this is not true with the 8hp as the converter is only used on takeoff and in the gear shift, it has internal clutch packs for when its in gear
I had no idea this transmission could do that! Very cool! And I see what your saying about the torque converter and clutch packs, but I mean torque converter is always there spinning as rotational mass so I think it causes a little loss regardless?
I like the idea of it, but every time i watch an 8hp swap i just feel how squishy shifts are. Especially downshifts (and also kinda slow). I feel like this swap is great for older luxury BMW‘s like e39 or e38. But for sportier driving i think that a proper DCT swap would be so much better and more aggressive. Especially revv matching and throttle blips on downshifts…
My 316i also grinds first unless I stop or perfectly rev match, poor E36, the previous owner must of beaten on it, but hey, as a first car still not complaining (especially since I'm from Europe)
