I could hear my bro talk all day about cars. He's descriptive and knowledgeable, and that's so hard to find nowadays. This is a Class A interview here. 👏 Congrats Alpha, this was a W for sure.
Met Frank at 2014 H2oi when I had my 325is e30. Bruh was sitting on the side of Coastal chillin and I asked about his build. I thought it was a m3...when I tell you, he schooled me on not only his build but bmw's in general, changed my life. I loved BMW's but I didn't know how deep the rabbit hole went with the lore or what was possible with the various engine platforms. I continued to see Frank at events/tracks like Englishtown, and he was always beating cars he had no business beating, but would break and showed up better like nothing happened. I hit him up when I was building my m52b28 and he gave me the same formula he said in the vid. I ended up going a different direction, building my s54, but everything he's saying is straight-up facts. Frank is the truth, and I'm glad he did this interview. This podcast is goated. But, now I have to port my s54 exhaust lol.
@TheFramos318 I'm in south jersey. I want to turbo my e46 m3.. Should be good for 600hp stock block right. If it's a healthy block I mean! I seen way more power on vids but don't want much at 1st that's down the road.

Love to see it! Keep it up!
Great Video. Frank is extremely knowledgeable. He built my s52 for me. Exactly what he said about the oil pump but is exactly what happened to my motor. Had to open the entire motor and just rebuilt the entire thing.

Theres a lot of shit in Europe that people have built that people know nothing about, even other European countries because of language barriers. Especially when it comes to German cars. Then you find out theres people with weird ass names in some corner of Europe that has built exactly what you're doing, but 10 years ago but he doesn't really speak english and all the information online is hieroglyphics
Another drag racing lore, Darrel Alderman was transporting coke in the slicks of his race cars. Also the way Darrel Alderman’s Pro Stock motors were destroyed apparently someone broke into the shop and smashed them. NHRA banned his setup but was allowed to keep the last 2 or 3 engines. Look into all the conspiracies around Darrel Alderman. Dodge fan boys should love it
E36 all motor guys that take off their m50 manifold often regret it cuz they lose low end torque for high end power. You get a little faster throttle response but it feels weaker. Man knows his stuff.
3:17 what’s crazy to me is, maybe I’m slow… m50’s were in the e34’ 25i’s. I don’t recall e36’s ever having m50’s. Not to say they don’t exist but every e36 I’ve seen was m52.
Fun fact, it was the e30 till 1993 in Germany. I had a calipso e30 vert that was a German spec gray market 93' (in upstate n.y.) . Always had to order 92 parts (and everything under the hood was in German)
Another fun fact is that bmw did not want to deal with OBD2. So they sold "1995" cars in North America until mid 1997 or so. If you pay attention , lots of 1995 cars for sale. Lots of 1 year only 95 e36 m3's. Hardly ever a 1996. Lots of 97's and 1998's
Btw I truly appreciate all the technical talk and knowledge I’m trying my best to learn as much as I about cars without paying for school atm can’t afford it
Bro is very knowledgeable, but i gotta call bs on the fake dyno just because the lines crossed at a different RPM. I took a nascar/nhra type course in the school I went to and we learned about the situation he was describing, but this formula only equates with certain engines. It was a good way of telling if someone is cheating in a race where the engine restrictions are tight and every engine has the same specs. For example you can dyno a stock 350 and save the chart and then install better heads and cam and if you overlay the charts you'll find the cross section moves higher in the rpm range. 350 was the example I used but the same is true for any other engine, even inline engines.
Thank you sir, the fake dyno thing I was referring to was an actual shop who admitted he faked it for sales, but yo are correct a large majority of engines do cross at 5252, but some don't.

Frank is very smart and a good talker, very educated in the car community. From working for PetrolWerks to doing his own thing, he’s always had the knowledge to do well.
Also the 2JZ as he stated was developed by a German engineer race team. Francis definitely knows. To add also that German engineer based the bottom end off an old Mercedes I6 block.
@Francis_von_louie My Father has a Euro 85' 300D 5 speed manual cloth interior that's been sitting for 23 years in my sister's garage. Looks like the 87' we got w164 I believe. I'm thinking about running a fuel cell and overhaul the system. That'd be awesome if I could run it on 93 and E85. The bay is beautiful to work and run a PT6466 on E85 standalone.
32:09, they may use different scale for hp and tq, or plot tq in nm (then you need 30% bigger numbers on the side), or is scaled to fit hp cheating happens in correction factor 33:44 crank/wheel, its same hp when doubling, so doesn't matter.. also 300hp 300tq - tq would need to be in nm, even an m54b30 does only that amount 50:54 this surprises me, who even does turbos on stock motronic ecu? pnp boards are out for m50 for 10years, i know there were ton of guys running Megasquirts 14+years back. With Siemens ecu its a bit different, it can be done on ms41 but you are somewhat limited (resistor to maf signal or even bigger maf) and you still only need $300 for pnp ecu (speeduino for example). MS43 is a bit better at turboing but still, what you dont invest in standalone you will pay in number of tunes you will need, and in parts you brake. And in the end of the day, if you want to dial it up, you will need to get standalone either way. But going from cheaper standalone to more expensive (lets again use speeduino, and then going to emu black with tcu lamik for 8hp) you already have build running engine correct way, you don't rely on factory sensors (and their number or application, lets say you now have even with cheap ecu (rusefi uaefi is $100, has build in o2 and dbw) you can have fuel and oil pressure in, crankcase/coolant pressure, and have fully working boost by gear and boost cut, with non fuel cut limiters (spark cut) and would other way knock you engine on limiter with pump gas) 1:14:21 oil pump chain tensioner is needed, welding the nut doesn't solve the issue, that way you will just snap shaft or part where its welded. At high rpm it has harmonics/slop in chain that normaly drives nut off 1:37:33 they didn't even have 100k miles, much lower as they were new cars, problem was BMW wouldn't support BMW Motorsport with brand new engines, so BMW Motorsport had to source them from road going vehicles ( this was true for year or two, after that they got deal with BMW). Similar thing with Subaru, any Subaru wrc or autocross head has nothing to do with Subaru, they get casted in England with totally different ports shape and location. 1:37:51 not true, they weren't seasoned, or even outside, block are ruined by that (just look on L19 material.. hydrogen embrittlement is thing in any material and metal, even plastics). In time they made 800-1000hp, all block were brand new from BMW. Also don't believe horsepower claims. You cant make that amount of hp at that pressure with fuel they used. As said, they are at best 1000-1150hp (in qualification with blowing turbo/engine after lap/one straight) .. not 1400 or 1600hp for a lap like some say. In normal racing it was 650-800hp engine.
I got a m52 with m50 head 6266 percision single top mount, etc etc in my 1989 e30 vert. I did almost of the work myself but damn I wish I had the knowledge to figure out awd. I don't even have a cage so my car leaves brown stains but hoping to get a ford 8.8 rear this summer to help put the power down smoother 🙏

I'm thinking about running a fuel cell and overhaul the system. That'd be awesome if I could run it on 93 and E85. The bay is beautiful to work and run a PT6466 on E85 standalone.
My man frank so freakin knowledgeable and on point ! All shop owners and car enthusiasts need a page from his book
Thank you bro 💪🏼
@@Francis_von_louie no problem bro !! ⚡️💪
Making your guests feel comfortable enough to speak openly and share stories is a skill. Well done
Shout out to my boy for rocking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hat!!! 813 babyyyyy!!!

So glad there’s no one chiming in and killing this interview.
32:09, they may use different scale for hp and tq, or plot tq in nm (then you need 30% bigger numbers on the side), or is scaled to fit
hp cheating happens in correction factor
33:44 crank/wheel, its same hp when doubling, so doesn't matter.. also 300hp 300tq - tq would need to be in nm, even an m54b30 does only that amount
50:54 this surprises me, who even does turbos on stock motronic ecu? pnp boards are out for m50 for 10years, i know there were ton of guys running Megasquirts 14+years back. But going from cheaper standalone to more expensive (lets again use speeduino, and then going to emu black with tcu lamik for 8hp) you already have build running engine correct way, you don't rely on factory sensors (and their number or application, lets say you now have even with cheap ecu (rusefi uaefi is $100, has build in o2 and dbw) you can have fuel and oil pressure in, crankcase/coolant pressure, and have fully working boost by gear and boost cut, with non fuel cut limiters (spark cut) and would other way knock you engine on limiter with pump gas)
1:14:21 oil pump chain tensioner is needed, welding the nut doesn't solve the issue, that way you will just snap shaft or part where its welded. At high rpm it has harmonics/slop in chain that normaly drives nut off
1:37:33 they didn't even have 100k miles, much lower as they were new cars, problem was BMW wouldn't support BMW Motorsport with brand new engines, so BMW Motorsport had to source them from road going vehicles ( this was true for year or two, after that they got deal with BMW).
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I learned something. Your time was not wasted.
No one ever talks about the s54 😐
I'll make a full episode on how it's not better than the m50 😂
I got a m52 with m50 head 6266 percision single top mount, etc etc in my 1989 e30 vert. I did almost of the work myself but damn I wish I had the knowledge to figure out awd. I don't even have a cage so my car leaves brown stains but hoping to get a ford 8.8 rear this summer to help put the power down smoother 🙏
i heard he said sunrise hwy, shoutout long island native 💯
So much knowledge 💯
Thank you man
I like the way he explains things, learned a lot from this interview!
Thank you, I tried to explain things as best I can
@@Francis_von_louie You are welcome, thankyou for providing such an awesome outlook and perspective, i have a similar outlook and needed to hear a lot of what you spoke about

Using them Honda b18 rods hmmm keep it close to the chest 🤫
Actually not using those, I have looked into them, but my car has an off the shelf bmw rod, nothing for a different platform

That's what I try to tell everyone, thank you for watching
Wow surprised there are OG car guys on this channel.. not all the new BMW owners are knowledgeable like this dude. Y’all just like to flex a car the bank owns and put bolts ons and that’s it.
Thank you, I appreciate it
