"Component Video" usually is not RGB discrete video, unless specifically stated as such. It is Brightness/Luminance (Y), Luma-Blue delta (Pb), Luma-Red delta (Pr), with the sync signal/clock carried on the (Y) signal. Usually pure analog RGB also requires a separate composite (S) sync signal or two (H+V) sync signals. Anyway, cool looking capture card!!
1080i is actually the same picture quality as 1080p! The only difference is the field order. The i stands for interlaced where the image is partially blended with the next frame like a coat zipper, 1080p is just removing the zipper "deinterlacing" so it looks like a photograph. All broadcasted HD television is recorded and played back in 1080i.
I have actually bought the black magic, and I'd have to say the most interesting thing that I didn't expect is that the audio out on this card is really fucking good!
I have an intensity pro and as long as it's HDMI, Component, or RCA, it can record it. So If you have a 3D video going through an HDMI cable, you can run it into the Intensity and record it.
AES/EBU is the professional S/PDIF, for those of you who don't know. That's the random black connector on the breakout. It pushes very high quality audio.
I like the new format. The B-Roll footage is great. Match up the white balance and its PERFECT. Equipment and set notwithstanding, your professionalism is the reason I've subscribed. Thanks for the videos!
Linus, that Spartan chip is an FPGA. Around it you would find the EEPROM for it as all FPGAs are blank when booted so need to have to have code loaded from another chip straight away to work. The Samsung chip is SDRAM that goes straight into the FPGA as a video data buffer. FPGAs can be programmed to work onto PCI-E straight off so no need for other devices. Apart from that, the analog devices chip is likely to be a ADC for the component inputs.
I wouldn't disown Analogue video just like that Linus! It's quite a handy feature to have in my opinion. Remember all of your home-videos are analogue, and you can't excately plug a HDMI into your VCR. Most VHS, BETA and Video-8 tapes only last around 15 years before they start to suffer from tape rot! I find it weird that some new Vision mixers are still designed for analogue video and no HDMI.
What you mean to say is interlacing causes a 50% drop in the vertical resolution of every frame relative to progressive scan. It's not "fake 1080p" so much as "half 1080p."
AES is digital audio linus. Im not sure why its part of the analog stream but on the konda 3G cards the DVI looking input is actually 16channels in/out of AES
That is true, but up until quite recently 1080i was the broadcast standard in the UK. But as you said, Now everything is moving towards progressive scan (1080p) and bigger TV resolutions. Sony will be releasing/have the first consumer 4K television. The London games were shot in 8K (7680 × 4320). You want something more confusing? Check out film formats, marry them with different types of anamorphic lenses and you're in for one hell of a headache!
A lot of people have been saying all of this upgrading is total overkill. But the matter of fact is that there are people out there with less support and views as linus yet there spending tones. And keep in mind this is a channel for tech enthusiasts... so overkill is kinda what we crave >:)
I can assure to you with years of experience in post-production that footage quality does limit your work. If you could key, track, matchmove, grade and composite heavily compressed, low res footage like you can uncompressed and high res footage then that would be all we use since it is light, cheap and fast. It's possible to produce amazing stuff with low end gear. But it does create certain boundaries and limits that high end gear doesn't. They are not always bad things but they do exist.
I have this capture card also as I stream too, mostly current gen console games for fighters and such, some older systems don't have HDMI like PS2, Dreamcast, SNES, and Genesis, I use the analog breakout cable to capture those old systems
if you're trying to capture a PS3 with the device it doesn't allow you to capture it through HDMI because of movie recording, so the only way to capture it is through composite and you can still use the HDMI out in order to watch the footage on your TV
you use the same software as you would with hdmi, it can record identical formats with every kind of input and it doesnt have the lines on the top and right side of recordings like the hd pvr 1
I'm going to wait until there is an affordable capture card for 1080p content. With the next-gen consoles coming, I feel there will be an increase in 1080p gaming videos on TH-cam.
I don't know why everybody is complaining. Sure I liked the old TechTips but I'm not gonna un-sub because of it. I still enjoy watching your channel. Keep it up man c:
NOOOO!? You only need 1080p30? I had to get rid of this card and upgrade because I was using it to record my PC the same time I was playing games. And I don't know about you, but 30fps when gaming is just baaddddddd...... 60fps I can live with........ p.s. I love your shows, and I honestly have had zero problems with your new setups! I know you just posted a video about people unsubscribing, and they are just silly..... Keep up the good work sir! You are why I have my PC I have!
I'm pretty sure most people don't even know they have a cap on their internet because most people don't actually run into it. And caps are rising exponentially, so I think GamingPrower is right, we will be seeing an increase in 1080p gaming videos. And getting a capture card is probably a better idea than using your gpu to capture video while your gaming.
The purpose of analog is to convert old VHC, Vynils...probably all the crazy stuff from the past into digital format. We just love to see old videos come back to life on TH-cam, don´t we ^_^
Just thought Id stop by and show you guys over a linus how to capture from these Blackmagic cards properly into prores 422 10bit at 400mb/s for editing. Most give up on these cards but I will finally share my studio workflow to the TH-cam world as there is nothing on this topic. You can click on my logo head over to my channel and watch the premiere tonight if your interested in prores 422 capture 10 bit pipeline in a windows pc workflow. This footage can import into premiere and davanci without reencoding.
It is real 1080 with the difference that 1080p has 25/30 full frames and 1080i has 50/60 interlaced (half) frames. But Gordon Freeman is right that 1080i looks crappy on pc's because it is for broadcasting. 1080p is for the internet.
this card's length is excellent for my gigabyte x58 ud5 first pci-e. I cant never find anything to put on that slow because of north bridge heat sink in the way but the avermedia live gamer HD can support 1080p 30fps for console like xbox 360/ps3 while black magic intensity pro does not recognize it pass 720p and only can do 1080i =( I wonder if avermedia can release bios/driver that supports it. h264 hardware encode is great of recording to harddrive. I hope a better solution comes out
Installing a PCI-e card is very simple, and I've done it before, so it won't be a challenge for me. However, I'm not sure if there are free PCI-slots on the Mac pro? I've heard it's only possible to change the RAM, but I guess that's not true then?
Practically speaking, because it's slightly better. Many people argue that the difference between, say, 120hz and 240hz is hardly noticeable. But people have a price point they're aiming for, and that may just be what's available. And hz isn't actually related to frame rate, anyways. It's a whole other specification of the display. Make sense?
I'm guessing you'er using it for gaming, and this looks like its specific for gaming, and its cheaper, so I'd go with that if I were you. I have no experience with either, just my opinion. It seems like the black magic is for video camera recording, not game recording.
I have this card. I wanted to use it to make lets plays from retro game consoles like sega genesis and snes but it doesnt support 240p :/ it works fine to caputre from xbox 360 tho. I hope they update the software or video drivers w/e so it has support for outdated resolutions.
for tv broadcast and still images is not bad, but for pc gaming is really bad since you are close to the monitor and those lines are really annoying if you are going to move around.
what are capture cards used for exactly can't you just film footage and then put it onto you pc and edit it that way. Someone please explain I'm new to this.
Unless majority of people get unlimited internet and no data caps. No matter how good cap cards get people will still record mostly in 720p. PC's can record 1080p no problem already.
Technically ... there are two things that are touted as 1080i. In one of them, you are correct, it is fake 1080p. However, Sony's version of 1080i is true 1080 and looks better because it creates smoother motion using 60fps all interlaced ... hence the i. Also, the 1080p designation is confusing, because we never have a true non-interlaced image when using digital mediums ... simply because we use alternating current (which causes flicker at 60hz or 50hz respectively.) (pro cinematographer here)
Hey Linus wich of this Mobos do you recomend for an HTPC ,video editing & gaming Rig. The one that you think will satisfy mi needs? x79 ASRock extreme 11, x79 ASUS WS x79 or the Maximus V z77!
thanks on badatgaems it was the cooler wile the enermax are gots big heatpipes direct to the CPU it´s are not a nothing weight cooler . the cooler was on the left side not right on the CPU so the Heatpipe not connected with the CPU and my CPU gots by stressing a thermic of 80°C so what you never see when the PC is closed :-)
by the time that he could use it to the maximum potential... it would be around $2000 because everyone would be using it. Price drop comes with supply and demand.. and the Tech price is really mostly because its a good camera... but we are just starting to see 2K videos... once 4K is used then we will have 8K... There is no such thing as future proofing. If you knew what the "K" stood for and what its used for you would also agree with me... there's always a bigger fish.
So if I've been going around shooting a documentary with the Sony PMW Ex1 and captured all my footage from the SxS cards via U.S.B to my hard drive, does that mean it would have been originally better if I had captured it HDMI ??
"Component Video" usually is not RGB discrete video, unless specifically stated as such. It is Brightness/Luminance (Y), Luma-Blue delta (Pb), Luma-Red delta (Pr), with the sync signal/clock carried on the (Y) signal. I have owned a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI Capture Card for 18 months. Great piece of Kit!
Have had this card for 3 years now and it's still the best one I have used.
watching in 2022. u guys came a long way
I wouldn't disown Analogue video just like that Linus! It's quite a handy feature to have in my opinion. Your reviews are always a nice experience in the evening :)
I got this capture card in my pc right now, just make sure you have a really good computer, because a 2 min clip from xbox is about 1gb in size
Actually there are cameras which can also capture in raw video and not just compressed format.
A lot of people have been saying all of this upgrading is total overkill.
But the matter of fact is that there are people out there with less support and views as linus yet there spending tones.
And keep in mind this is a channel for tech enthusiasts... so overkill is kinda what we crave >:)

It's one of the top gaming capture cards... no ghetto rigging required....
I have this capture card also as I stream too, mostly current gen console games for fighters and such, some older systems don't have HDMI like PS2, Dreamcast, SNES, and Genesis, I use the analog breakout cable to capture those old systems
This card looks very handy, 2 cards in a fast PC and you have a great mutli-cam setup for small to medium sized events.
You're better off with the Avermedia LiveGamer HD. use this if you're going to be using a separate machine for capture.
rendering it once versus twice.
And you can select what settings you want to render to.
Yes you can, just a bit more difficult to set up. Very possible, indeed.
i like these kind of vids, it shows a bit personallity! keep doing these!!!!!
if you're trying to capture a PS3 with the device it doesn't allow you to capture it through HDMI because of movie recording, so the only way to capture it is through composite and you can still use the HDMI out in order to watch the footage on your TV
The best card ever I got three and still use them. The first card ever where you can feed external audio in to an HDMI signal
Definitely prefer this style of recording over the 2 previous videos. But that's just me own 2 bits...
60fps would hit the limit of the PCIe bandwidth. 60fps 1080p @ 4:2:2 would be about 245MB/s
i just bought one of these and was trying to figure out what the usb on the card was for and HOLY SHIT YOUNG LINUS!
you use the same software as you would with hdmi, it can record identical formats with every kind of input and it doesnt have the lines on the top and right side of recordings like the hd pvr 1
hey cameraman, I have breathing problems too, have you tried the breatheright strips? they help a bit
I'm going to wait until there is an affordable capture card for 1080p content. With the next-gen consoles coming, I feel there will be an increase in 1080p gaming videos on TH-cam.
man, i love linus vids, they have kind of a more personal feel, the new format has a more professional look, but it's not that personal for me.
This way of unboxing things is the best !
You've gotta be kidding me. I was looking for this thing a few days ago. And now you are unboxing it :D Linus understands me
Can you do a setup/Behind the Scenes with the cameras and the capturecards?
I don't know why everybody is complaining. Sure I liked the old TechTips but I'm not gonna un-sub because of it. I still enjoy watching your channel. Keep it up man c:
That wasn't the new camera.. You can see the new camera sitting on the tripod at 3:53
NOOOO!? You only need 1080p30? I had to get rid of this card and upgrade because I was using it to record my PC the same time I was playing games. And I don't know about you, but 30fps when gaming is just baaddddddd...... 60fps I can live with........

Its so awesome to hear a legit Canadian say Hoser!
Awesome Linus, thanks for doing this vid! I was considering buying one to use with my Xbox.
I'm pretty sure most people don't even know they have a cap on their internet because most people don't actually run into it.
And caps are rising exponentially, so I think GamingPrower is right, we will be seeing an increase in 1080p gaming videos.

Only if you have a second recording computer set up to handle it. Otherwise, way worse.
The purpose of analog is to convert old VHC, Vynils...probably all the crazy stuff from the past into digital format. We just love to see old videos come back to life on TH-cam, don´t we ^_^
Yeah now we can hear you !
With dxtory you don't need a card to record on pc.
But for 60fps 720p streaming it's niiice !.
what are you talking about? i was talking about that i can record hdcp protected content with my h727 over hdmi because the driver/software has a bug.
"Bingo" is that what was actually said at the start of the video to queue the take? If so I love it! :D
Just thought Id stop by and show you guys over a linus how to capture from these Blackmagic cards properly into prores 422 10bit at 400mb/s for editing. Ofcourse. Linus usually talks about matte black pcbs on graphics cards so i thought it'd be fun
so as long as the camera can output through hdmi you can use this card to capture? cool beans.
I got this card. It's quite good but the problem is that it only supports 1080i and stereo audio through HDMI.
It is real 1080 with the difference that 1080p has 25/30 full frames and 1080i has 50/60 interlaced (half) frames. But Gordon Freeman is right that 1080i looks crappy on pc's because it is for broadcasting. 1080p is for the internet.

h264 hardware encode is great of recording to harddrive. I hope a better solution comes out
I really prefer this type of unboxing. It just feels more like home.
Sounded great until he mentioned 30FPS. Are you gonna use an SSD for capturing the video? Ever try setting up a RAMdisk?
Installing a PCI-e card is very simple, and I've done it before, so it won't be a challenge for me.
However, I'm not sure if there are free PCI-slots on the Mac pro? I've heard it's only possible to change the RAM, but I guess that's not true then?

That, is a good idea. And could possibly give smoother recording...
There is this hing I've always wondered.
How do you get a hold of everything you review?
I mean, you don't buy it all, do you?
where are the other new camera gear unboxing videos?
please video the making of the machine(s) that you are gonna use with this card!!!
I have this card. I wanted to use it to make lets plays from retro game consoles like sega genesis and snes but it doesnt support 240p :/ it works fine to caputre from xbox 360 tho. I hope they update the software or video drivers w/e so it has support for outdated resolutions.
try ripping off your cpu cooler and then re seating it, there could be an air bubble or something in your thermal paste.
for tv broadcast and still images is not bad, but for pc gaming is really bad since you are close to the monitor and those lines are really annoying if you are going to move around.
wow 360p and you can still read the small text
love the new cam
Hmm... How about the decklink cards, are they better? Or avermedia's latest Live gamer HD?
what are capture cards used for exactly can't you just film footage and then put it onto you pc and edit it that way. Someone please explain I'm new to this.

so could i use this with the hdmi output of my graphics cad to have a sort of hardware version of fraps?
What is the difference between the normal and 2D version?
if you could slraidfire 2 of those together for 60 fps at 1080p that would be amazing
i was thinking about this could you use the black magic intensity pro to capture your gaming buy hooking it up to a hdmi port on your monitor ?
Proud user of blackmagic intensity pro
reason for using analog signals is for capturing 720p on devices with HDCP like the PS3
There are free PCIe slots in the Mac Pro
You didnt mention that these are awesome for recording game footage from a console.
Hey Linus wich of this Mobos do you recomend for an HTPC ,video editing & gaming Rig. The one that you think will satisfy mi needs? x79 ASRock extreme 11, x79 ASUS WS x79 or the Maximus V z77!

Analogue artists like myself return your friendly jibe with an equally friendly one-fingered salute.
by the time that he could use it to the maximum potential... it would be around $2000 because everyone would be using it. And then you need a DVI to HDMI converter box, which can be $150. Or you can just use component cables...
hey Linus one question, would it be possible to stream video games with this card, like off my pc, like the program xsplit?
you can install pci cards in your own mac if you like.
but for ps3 you need to use the analog signals, so get the HD AV cables for the ps3 and use that
eewwwwww green PCB! 2:27 love it when Linus get all Canadian!
What's with the recently video quality? Did Slick died?
An AMD Athlon X2 isn't able to keep up with a high-end card. For a 660 Ti to stretch its legs, you should have at least a Sandy Bridge i3.
It's more implied that you use it in a PCI-e slot on a mac pro.
Please make a setup tutorial
that's cool I wanted one, but I need the USB 3 version, because my video cards cover the space that would used :p
You can put it in the apple desktop for studios that starts at $2000
so does my laptop have one in it right now?
So if I've been going around shooting a documentary with the Sony PMW Ex1 and captured all my footage from the SxS cards via U.S.B to my hard drive, does that mean it would have been originally better if I had captured it HDMI ??
Can you capture PC gameplay with this (GPU -> this card -> monitor) with no impact on framerates?
Yes, you can. You will only be able to record in 720p because an Xbox can't put out 1080p
how is 1080i bad?
