I sailed this in early summer 1982 in a 24 ft. Frazier sailboat during a force nine gale. We took "shelter" in Pig bay (Tai-na-bruich) and spent the night reseting our anchors. We are still alive because a huge Lobsterboat saw our situation and told us to tuck ourselves behind him. Its an experience I shall never forget. I'm lucky to be alive.

Truly one of the best videos on you tube. Certainly one of the best if not THE best video I have ever seen. ( I am 62 today ). The unobtrusive yet beautifully instructional use of the computer graphics to illustrate in an instantly comprehensible manner what we were all seeing with our eyes was beyond outstanding !!!. Thank you Hebridean Wild and D. Philip, very informative with excellent CG too. For me, that was the icing on Madeleine Bunting's cake, 'Love of Country - A Hebridean Journey', pp 63 - 68. Very good final shot where we really feel how hard the boat has to accelerate to stay ahead of the bore. All I need now is to see it for myself.

I live on an island in The Bay of Fundy which has the highest tides in the world. Extremes are the norm here. This vid is very, very well done. The CGI to explain what is happening on the surface helps me to understand some of the things I've seen around here. Great video.

"Music is lovely, too - a refreshing change from the shit many folk think mandatory for their efforts to succeed" - I agree with all, post your hyphen. However I didn't like the music, I don't think adding music is appropriate to a factual / documentary piece.

Two things truly amaze me watching this video. First house still the camera appears to be that videoed this trip. Why wasn’t it bouncing all over the place? Was there some type of video stabilizer on the camera? The second thing that surprised me was in this rough water, not a single person who was videotaped was wearing a life preserver! This was a truly amazing video. Thank you.

If you are mad enough you can dive to the top of the pinnacle on slack. I can very definitely say that there is bugger all to see except round holes and crabs. Apparently the crabs use the holes to hide from the current on flood though how they know that I’m not sure. We didn’t wait there long enough to check it out. It’s much more interesting on the surface and the video, though very good, misses out on how loud the noise of the surf is. A great place to visit.

I have watched trawlers leave Criban and head straight out through the Gulf of Corryvrekan, however I have heard the take of a naval vessel which attempted the passage when a heavy sea was running outside and it came o of much 'the worse for wear'.

During the First World War a large British warship tried to force its way against the tides in the narrow stretch of water between the Scottish mainland and Orkney, another area of dangerous tide races. It ended up badly damaged with its gun barrels bent and out of action for months.

Beautifully made video. The Hebrides are such a beautiful. and fascinating part of the World
This brings back memories of passing through Corryvreckan aboard PS " Waverley" out of Oban, and in 1989 while staying at Kinaughdrachd, just "over the hill" from the Strait at the Northern tip of Jura. Thankfully I've only experienced it "topside", I'm quite happy to see below the surface in simulation!
George Orwell nearly drowned there while staying at Barnhill when he and his stepson foolishly set out to pass through the Corryvreckan in a small boat with an outboard motor, which was lost overboard as they passed through the strait. Luckily they were washed ashore and rescued.
Orwell been advised to go to Jura for the "clean" Atlantic air as he was then terminally ill with TB. He was working on his final novel "1984", and had he been drowned we'd never have learnt of "Big Brother"!

Took them all down the sound of Islay and spent the day at Glengarrisdale bothy. We found the best one for excitement was the grey dog ( well at the right time) no mystic really just common sense the what the sea is and what it can do if you don’t take care.
