Very surprised that you were awarded the 2nd medal, the Knight’s Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds!
That was the highest grade of the Knight’s Cross, and the award was only created by Hitler on 29 December 1944. It was intended to be awarded to only the 12 bravest soldiers of the Third Reich.
(Actually, only 1 was ever awarded - to Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a ground attack pilot who flew 2,100 combat missions in the Ju 87 Stuka, plus 430 in the ground attack versions of the Fw 190. He claimed to have destroyed over 500 Soviet tanks, sunk the battleship Marat, the cruiser Petropavlovsk (formerly Lützow) and the destroyer Minsk, plus 70 landing craft. He also claimed to have shot down 51 Soviet aircraft.)
Back to this video. Even the 1st medal, the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds is a tremendous achievement. Well deserved congratulations! Only 2 U-boat commanders were awarded 'the Diamonds' in WW2.
The first was awarded to Wolfgang Luth, who sank a massive 225,204 GRT of shipping and the French submarine Doris. Biggest ship sunk by Luth was the 13,801 ton New Sevilla, a British whale factory ship.
The second was Albrecht Brandi, who sank only 25,879 GRT of shipping (because he spent most of his time operating in the Mediterranean), but he also sank a naval tug and 3 warships: the famous cruiser-minelayer HMS Welshman, the Hunt II destroyer HMS Puckeridge, and the destroyer escort USS Fechteler. During his 5th patrol, he claimed to have sunk a Fiji class cruiser, a Tribal class destroyer, and the 23,456 ton troop transport Orcades. BdU believed the claims and decorated him with the Oak Leaves to his Knight’s Cross. In fact, none of the ships had even been damaged. Premature torpedo explosions and no visual confirmation may have been the cause of the misguided claim.
Albrecht Brandi was awarded the Diamonds to his Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords for his shore based duties commanding a U-boat flotilla in the Baltic in late 1944, not for his previous service as a U-boat commander.

four years late to reading this, but thanks for the information! My Granddad served on L128 HMS Wilton, a Type II Hunt class like HMS Puckeridge. My formative days were full of stories from my Granddad from take the King's shilling in 1942, transporting US lend lease destroyers on his first trip where he earned his anchor. He was then stationed on HMS Wilton and ran a couple of escort runs for the Russian convoys then went to the Med for the rest of the war.
His connection to Malta was huge, he was part of the ill fated supply force that got SS Ohio to Malta.
Post war he ran minesweeping and clearance around the Netherlands and guested for Ajax until he was demobbed. Because of this I can never attack Hunt class destroyers; it just feels wrong.
Personally I don't mind an episode with no action. The bit of a history lesson was rather nice. You had said you had wanted to stay out for Black May, and I didn't know much about it till today. So in a way a win for both of us. Keep up the good work.

The first campaign I ever did I ran into the HMS Hood as part of a task force, that totalled over 70,000 tons, it was pure chance too the destroyers were so heavily on me I had to hide my boat under the listing static Hood for 8 hours before surfacing and finishing it with the stern torpedo.

Hey Wolfpack, I'm currently a year deep in my Dark Waters SH4 run, gotta say this mod has teeth especially if you activate the harder escorts those DD's are nightmare stuff then. Would love to see a series on this mod in the style of this series :D

That was a cool episode. Staying on the surface during storms and just following the long course to the North Atlantic is cool to watch, that's part of it, a lot. It is difficult to find videos on youtube that capture this part of the game. Much of my time at Silent Hunter was like that, it ended up generating a greater reaction when I found contacts, adding a lot to the immersion. Your best friend at this time is your gramophone. This series is great, keep up the good work!

It is not available yet unfortunately.
Sadly for their crews, Schnorchel upgrade has only became available in very late '44. At this and the last stage of the war most of u-boats were sunk by patrol aircraft, caught on surface.
Surface travel at night were more dangerous than daytime. At night, crews could not see or hear approaching aircraft (chugging diesels were drowning out the sound of an aircraft engines).
It was very entertaining. Waiting with baited breath to see if you would make it home. Looking forward for some more patrols.
Congratulations on finishing another successful patrol. 1943 is not impossible to survive even with a type IX. Makes sense to have an experienced flak gunner and repair crew as the boat crash dive time takes quite a lot.
My mod list is very similar and my last type IXC career ended ridiculously somewhere in the south african grid. Did some testing and found that after late 43 I always end up with more than a few glitches considering the A.I. detection mostly. I either had my watch crew being blind or able to spot things well beyond the radar. Evading a single escort became impossible, the radar and snorkel were not available... Tried various installation orders on GWX, the u-boats compilations, no matter what GUI, environment and sensors.. All of these have different values in several dat and cfg files and need some manual editing to make them properly customized for your mod list. Let me know if you need more info on this. The Germans still had a bunch of Uboats after black May, it was just that after that month they didn’t stand much of a chance sinking the required amount of tonnage to starve out the UK, not nearly enough boats, and far too many escorts and planes
Even though you have some episodes where very little happen I still think it's cool I like to also see the slow days and the crew management part
I'll try to show more of that in the future.

It always annoyed me that most of the radio messages were essentially window dressing, I first noticed when BdU told a group of 5 u-boats to converge on my boats posistion. I decided to wait to see if any turned up and after a week I realised I'd been had.
It would be cool if you make it to the day your boat was sunk(irl) and the game makes it insanely hard to survive that day. And if you do, the difficulty goes back to normal
If the game did that I would honestly just try to choose a boat that survived the war. Especially because, for Wolfpack and the way he runs his campaigns, the loss of the boat means the loss of a major source of content.
Keep hanging in there. I feel things are going to get worse, er, more challenging from here. I know the realism of the game is one of its attributes, but at times like this it is challenging to keep one's attention. Unless one likes micromanagement. Good on you for staying with it. Me, I'd have chucked it a while back. Makes great viewing though since you cut that drudge stuff out.
As a hardcore military history guy I liked the episode.

Don't worry about not having any action. I've played Grey Wolves mod myself and something the seas are just empty. I doubt the actual U-boat war was that exciting either.
Even GWX has more traffic than there was in real life.

Good episode, you cannot kill all the time even tigers must rest. Strange Germans didn't develop radar controlled missiles to defend subs from aircraft ? They had radar since 40-4 and developed missiles. imagine how deadly subs, and armies would have been not needing to worry about Allied air dominance. just have a few missiles watching the skies. Air power would cease to be a factor.
The world’s technology wouldn’t bring about any sort of guided missile (at least to the point of hitting an aircraft) for another 20 years and the invention of the computer.
Even then modern subs worst enemy is still aircraft. Because while you could load up on AA missiles theoretically its a waste of time in practice. If you reveal yourself to the enemy by launching a missile you’ll have half a dozen more planes, ASW helis and cruise missile launched torps closing in from all sides

If you transited the Bay of Biscay in May '43 without a single air attack, you must not have the realism set very high. If the skipper of U-531 was awarded the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, he's the only one besides Stuka ace Hans Rudel!
The weather was poor for the majority of my transit. That's why I was not attacked. Also I was submerged for a good chunk of the transit.
No worries on your lack of action returning to port with 1 torpedo. What could we have asked of you under those circumstances?

Thanks again for another awesome video! Regarding your current campaign, are you using the 'Merged Campaign' feature provided with GWX? Also, how do you manage to refuel without ending the current patrol? Any insight would be very appreciated!
No I am not using the Merged campaign. It makes load times a bit longer. You really only need that enables if yhou are going into another theater of operations. Like traveling from the Atlantic into the Indian Ocean for example. You can refuel at U-takers without ending the patrol by installing the H.sie hard-coded fixes.

The primary targets for U-boats throughout the ware were trade ships. Warships will only get more deadly.

Yup. Unfortunately the one thing that will significantly increase my chances of survival is the snorkel but it doesn't become available till a bit later.

Yup! It's pretty good.
@@Wolfpack345 There is also a Soviet sub mod with their own campaigns even. Last time I checked it wasn't translated to English though, it had some nice 3D models. Some of their earlier subs are quite similar to the Type VII as they cooperated with the Germans in the 30s in sub development. IIRC they don't have TDC so you have to follow pre-calculated tables based on the approach to the target.

Been watching a lot of these videos. I enjoy the narrative and the gameplay tremendously. The graphics are dated but the gameplay more than makes up for it. I'm definitely starting to get the SH3 bug.
You know, I keep looking for a newer sub game that captures WW2 sub combat like SH3 did / does... they just don't quite lock it down the same way. Wolfpack I've been looking at Uboat, Wolfpack (the game), SH4 / 5... Looks like SH5 was a bug infested mess from all accounts- Which has your interest other than SH3 (if any?)
Well I enjoy SH4 a bunch. It is very similar to SH3 but you get to play as the American Fleet boats which are fascinating imo. SH5 like you said is pretty buggy and even with mods and I find it very difficult to get in to.despite that there are people that swear by SH5 now so maybe you will enjoy it more than me.
I have to say Wolfpack is hands down the best WW2 subsim made in the past few years. If you have a group of freinds to play with it's amazing. UBOAT shows a lot of potential but still has some kinks to work out.
If you are looking for something set in the Cold War Cold Waters is really great too.
TLDR: I like pretty much all Subsims

@@NiumeLTU Hudson bay was a big target for Uboats in the happy times. The turbulent water made sonar far less effective. Making the uboats even more deadly
