All the ports in SE Alaska are devastated financially also. Skagway, AK lost 95% of it's income in 2020. Seasonal workers were never hired so they don't get unemployment money. All the seasonal rentals were empty so landlord are going bankrupt. The town government has been living on emergency money that's now used up. This is a town that normally receives a millions guests in the five month season. Tens of millions of dollars of income are missing suddenly.

I was lucky to leave my Carnival ship on 9th of March, exactly one year ago, a couple of days before they stopped all sailings, few months later I found the news that the ship I have been living for almost 6 months was scrapped and I will be no longer working for the company. It's amazing how much can someone's life change in one year.

Many retirees prefer cruise ships because they can evade tax. Most countries have some sort of minimum stay duration (3-6 months) which makes you eligible to pay taxes. So moving from one so called retiree home to some XYZ vacation home in another country. It's not just enjoyment...but the sheer amount of money they save from paying minimal taxes.
I love cruising- at least I have in the past. Been on a ton. I would go on another cruise,but not right away. Maybe in another 2 or 3 years from now. Who knows--- maybe Covid will be over by then. If it's not maybe cases will be far far low.

The units aren’t built for long term housing and codes for boats and homes are very different. Houses have to meet different standards because it’s meant for long term habitation. I agree would be nice to have some other use though.
As an ex-employee with Carnival, I am thankful for the years I spent onboard, very hard work indeed, but at least they paid 10 times more than I would have gotten back in my place in South America, and for the same job. Yes, at home, I would have not worked 11 hours almost without a break seven days a week (for a seven-month term), but when it comes to salary/benefits, it was much more than I could have expected. And yes, these cruise lines are not registered as American companies. It is very clear in the contract. When I finished my contract I took the papers to a lawyer, who was frightned upon examining the clauses in the contract and the job itself, which the lawyer affirmed was analogous to slave labor. He said I could not do anything if I ever decided to sue the company as I would have to appeal in the Bahamas, instead of the USA.

In comparison with salary standards for a local US citizen, yes, it was less than minimum but I can tell you that even so, it was an incredible income for me. Even if you are against the cruise industry, they hire millions of people and save their lives from total misery.

They are actually mainly suing the companies for telling them that it was safe to go onboard. While the passengers knew of the disease prior to boarding, they had reached out to the cruise liner asking whether it was going to be cancelled, if they could cancel and get their money back (which they were told they could not) or if it was safe to continue. They were told that everything was fine and they were taking the necessary precautions (which they obviously hadn't) and mind you this was the beginning of the pandemic where passengers weren't aware of the severity of the virus and thus put a lot of their trust with these cruise liners in providing such information.

I don't know why anyone would care about having Wi-Fi anyway. The whole point of being on a cruise is getting away from all of that crap and immersing yourself in the activities while you're on your way to destinations. You don't just sit on the cruise ship, there's all kinds of outdoor activities on the ship and there are places that the ship will dock and you can get off and go off on your own or join a tour group or do what you like. I never would have visited the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and gotten to walk across it and seen distant Islands from its peaks or gone to Mazatlan or explored Old San Juan had the cruise ship not docked there. It's clear because you think it's all casinos and shuffleboard that you've never actually experienced a cruise
Man that's kinda a waste of resources... all those ships getting scrapped but it makes sense. It costs more to maintain a ship doing nothing than to scrap it and build new ones when the time comes.
There's a documentary on that ship waste yard and how deadly breaking down those ships are. A lot of the materials used to make and line the ship interiors are super toxic. The poor people who break them down either die from the physical conditions or the long term toxicity of the job. 😬

Because some people in our society (and the way financial responsibilities work) have lost any connection to reality. We are basically taught that when something goes wrong and we didn't cause it ourselves, someone else and, in case of doubts, some company, is responsible and we can sue them. I’ve been on 12 cruises and never had a problem. Also max 3000 passangers even on the largest ship, which was so big I didn’t even get to explore the whole ship in 8 days! Honestly the best vacations i’ve EVER had have been on cruises 🙌🏼

I went on one cruise as a kid, spent most of my time on the deck and about at night so it was pretty nice to basically have the ship to yourself. Unlimited pizza and ice cream in the middle of the night. Don't think I'd ever pay to be on one though.

Cruise lines have billions in the bank, saved up for when a downturn limits their sales. They are good until the end of 2021 or even longer, even if they don't make any money. The airlines could learn a thing or two from the cruise industry.

I think it's reasonable to expect to be told if you test positive to covid & have the ship's doctor suggest you stay in your cabin, not tell you you're negative & go socialise with all the other passengers - which is what that ship's crew did! Also reasonable for the ship to take precautions with their new crew who had been exposed to covid! Passengers knew the cruise was between 2 countries that were covid free & so reasonably assumed they were as safe as at home In this case even a government inquiry found they seriously screwed up! The Australian government screwed up too, but no mistaking the fact that a single week long cruise caused covid infections in every state of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America & suspected cases in a number of other countries with low testing rates & so unable to confirm. Secondary cases from WA to Tasmania to Auckland to LA etc were all confirmed from that ship though - and not a single one of the people who caused those infections were told they had tested positive until over a week after they had left the ship & in many cases they only found out the source when the media tracked them down & asked them if they had been sick! There were dozens of secondary deaths in relatives of people who had been on that ship that were fully preventable by simply telling the over 100 people who the ship's medical team already had positive covid test results for before the ship docked, about their positive test results! The cruise was between Australia & NZ, both of whom were covid free at the time, so there was no reason for anyone on board to assume they had caught covid while on that ship. They didn't know about the new crew members that had just flown in from the Diamond Princess to join that ship & who were coughing all over their food & infecting them with covid! Likewise when people on the RUby Princess got covid symptoms & saw the ship's doctor about it, they were tested & told they were fine & to continue enjoying the cruise, the cruise medical staff hiding from the patients their positive covid results! Look at the videos of the people leaving that ship & the crew all lined up forcing every passenger to walk between rows of them & have physical contact with them all! Even those that attempted to socially distance cause they had cold symptoms were denied the ability to do so by that ship's overbearing crew!
It will rise again! As someone who works in the industry. People of a certain age love cruises and it’s the best way and most positive health wise (less stress) for seniors to travel!

Theres a lot more to the situation than she let on, the problem was that they let the ~2,700 passengers get off the ship without letting some of them know if they were positive & called them all low risk, allowing them to travel around. The people who were visibly sick on the ship were also not put into quarantine.

I was lucky to leave my Carnival ship on 9th of March, exactly one year ago, a couple of days before they stopped all sailings, few months later I found the news that the ship I have been living for almost 6 months was scrapped and I will be no longer working for the company. It's amazing how much can someone's life change in one year.

Many retirees prefer cruise ships because they can evade tax. Most countries have some sort of minimum stay duration (3-6 months) which makes you eligible to pay taxes. So moving from one so called retiree home to some XYZ vacation home in another country. It's not just enjoyment...but the sheer amount of money they save from paying minimal taxes.
I love cruising- at least I have in the past. Been on a ton. I would go on another cruise,but not right away. Maybe in another 2 or 3 years from now. Who knows--- maybe Covid will be over by then. If it's not maybe cases will be far far low.
How this industry has avoided the climate talk baffles me! Plus it seems like the worst way to spend a holiday!

@@drivestowork The ships being scraped are elderly ones that were kept in service longer than expected because of unexpectedly high demand for cruises in recent years. There are still about 300 surviving ships and cruise lines have placed new orders for new ships in the last six months.

The units aren’t built for long term housing and codes for boats and homes are very different. Houses have to meet different standards because it’s meant for long term habitation. I agree would be nice to have some other use though.

As an ex-employee with Carnival, I am thankful for the years I spent onboard, very hard work indeed, but at least they paid 10 times more than I would have gotten back in my place in South America, and for the same job. Yes, at home, I would have not worked 11 hours almost without a break seven days a week (for a seven-month term), but when it comes to salary/benefits, it was much more than I could have expected.
And yes, these cruise lines are not registered as American companies. It is very clear in the contract. When I finished my contract I took the papers to a lawyer, who was frightned upon examining the clauses in the contract and the job itself, which the lawyer affirmed was analogous to slave labor. He said I could not do anything if I ever decided to sue the company as I would have to appeal in the Bahamas, instead of the USA.
You know that the polluting cruise was taking advantage of you right? They try to snatch people from weak countries so they give the big company's money. They pay you as little as they are allowed too.

In comparison with salary standards for a local US citizen, yes, it was less than minimum but I can tell you that even so, it was an incredible income for me. During vacation I was capable to travel to Europe if I wanted, something I could never afford when working in South America. Even if you are against the cruise industry, they hire millions of people and save their lives from total misery.

And despite what the news media tells you to think, the cruise lines don't go around polluting the waters willy-nilly. Right before the "pandemic" started, Carnival had been threatened that if ALL 100+ of their ships in each of their cruise lines weren't up to code, they'd be denied entry into the US. This was a domino effect from their ships caught dumping waste into the ocean.
_Currently_ (although, with the CDC, it really isn't affecting them more than other cruise lines) they aren't allowed to sail in the US.

They are actually mainly suing the companies for telling them that it was safe to go onboard. While the passengers knew of the disease prior to boarding, they had reached out to the cruise liner asking whether it was going to be cancelled, if they could cancel and get their money back (which they were told they could not) or if it was safe to continue. They were told that everything was fine and they were taking the necessary precautions (which they obviously hadn't) and mind you this was the beginning of the pandemic where passengers weren't aware of the severity of the virus and thus put a lot of their trust with these cruise liners in providing such information.

Never understood the allure of cruises. Having to pay for wifi while stuck indoors breathing recirculated air is an instant turn-off.
There fun trust me. It sounds like dog shit, but they made it for me, my favorite type of vacation. going to different beautiful beaches, or sailing to Alaska all while on a ship with entertainment and excellent food? I mean thats the lure to me.
I don't know why anyone would care about having Wi-Fi anyway. The whole point of being on a cruise is getting away from all of that crap and immersing yourself in the activities while you're on your way to destinations. You don't just sit on the cruise ship, there's all kinds of outdoor activities on the ship and there are places that the ship will dock and you can get off and go off on your own or join a tour group or do what you like. I never would have visited the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and gotten to walk across it and seen distant Islands from its peaks or gone to Mazatlan or explored Old San Juan had the cruise ship not docked there. It's clear because you think it's all casinos and shuffleboard that you've never actually experienced a cruise

Man that's kinda a waste of resources... all those ships getting scrapped but it makes sense. It costs more to maintain a ship doing nothing than to scrap it and build new ones when the time comes.
There's a documentary on that ship waste yard and how deadly breaking down those ships are. A lot of the materials used to make and line the ship interiors are super toxic. The poor people who break them down either die from the physical conditions or the long term toxicity of the job. 😬
Its a good opportunity to get rid of legacy ships, none of the big lines are cancelling new ships. At most some have been postponed

First of all, it’s a ‘ship’ not a boat. You couldn’t put thousands of people on a boat. Secondly, you are talking out of your ass-respectfully speaking. They are very spacious, with tonnes of room and lots of activities. You, in fact, very often forget you are at sea, and it’s more like a spacious hotel. Plus the water is typically very calm.
You shouldn’t criticize what you don’t know or haven’t experienced. They are hugely popular for a reason.

We are basically taught that when something goes wrong and we didn't cause it ourselves, someone else and, in case of doubts, some company, is responsible and we can sue them. I went on one cruise as a kid, spent most of my time on the deck and about at night so it was pretty nice to basically have the ship to yourself. Unlimited pizza and ice cream in the middle of the night. Don't think I'd ever pay to be on one though.

Cruise lines have billions in the bank, saved up for when a downturn limits their sales. They are good until the end of 2021 or even longer, even if they don't make any money. The airlines could learn a thing or two from the cruise industry.
Suing a cruise line because they didn't have people "socially distance" when covid was known about for 2 months? I probably wouldn't have went just to be safe but that's just me... Seems like a sack chaser to me

I think it's reasonable to expect to be told if you test positive to covid & have the ship's doctor suggest you stay in your cabin, not tell you you're negative & go socialise with all the other passengers - which is what that ship's crew did! Also reasonable for the ship to take precautions with their new crew who had been exposed to covid! Passengers knew the cruise was between 2 countries that were covid free & so reasonably assumed they were as safe as at home
In this case even a government inquiry found they seriously screwed up! The Australian government screwed up too, but no mistaking the fact that a single week long cruise caused covid infections in every state of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America & suspected cases in a number of other countries with low testing rates & so unable to confirm. Secondary cases from WA to Tasmania to Auckland to LA etc were all confirmed from that ship though - and not a single one of the people who caused those infections were told they had tested positive until over a week after they had left the ship & in many cases they only found out the source when the media tracked them down & asked them if they had been sick! There were dozens of secondary deaths in relatives of people who had been on that ship that were fully preventable by simply telling the over 100 people who the ship's medical team already had positive covid test results for before the ship docked, about their positive test results!
The cruise was between Australia & NZ, both of whom were covid free at the time, so there was no reason for anyone on board to assume they had caught covid while on that ship. They didn't know about the new crew members that had just flown in from the Diamond Princess to join that ship & who were coughing all over their food & infecting them with covid! Likewise when people on the RUby Princess got covid symptoms & saw the ship's doctor about it, they were tested & told they were fine & to continue enjoying the cruise, the cruise medical staff hiding from the patients their positive covid results!
Look at the videos of the people leaving that ship & the crew all lined up forcing every passenger to walk between rows of them & have physical contact with them all! Even those that attempted to socially distance cause they had cold symptoms were denied the ability to do so by that ship's overbearing crew!
It will rise again! As someone who works in the industry. People of a certain age love cruises and it’s the best way and most positive health wise (less stress) for seniors to travel!
I had to cancel my Alaska cruise that was booked for September 2020. It will be years before I book another cruise

Yup grown woman it's their fault for not telling you to follow regular precautions like not get too close to sick people and wash your hands.
Theres a lot more to the situation than she let on, the problem was that they let the ~2,700 passengers get off the ship without letting some of them know if they were positive & called them all low risk, allowing them to travel around. The people who were visibly sick on the ship were also not put into quarantine.

I have worked on Diamond Princess 2016-17 and Ruby Princess 2017. Entertainment department. Diamond Princess 5:40 there is a spot I have spent countless hours just watching sea and listen to music using headphones somewhere around Southeast-Asia.

I never really got cruising, literally the worst way to travel and experience other countries and cultures. So water off my back, maybe even leaning towards GOOD!

The thing that always strikes me is the people they put in commercials for the industry vs. the people that actually go on cruises.
I don't get why people would want to trap themselves with thousands of other strangers out in the middle of nowhere and pay handsomely for it.
I guess a lot of the people who regularly go on cruises like a predictable routine?
I don't see why people would even want to eat at the same table every day, instead of finding new restaurants and exploring, but I guess that's relaxing for a lot of people. Maybe they're done with too many changes at their age?

I took one cruise in my life. Apart from the awful environmental damage a cruise ship creates, it was one of the most awesome things I've ever done. I hope the industry will survive and that eventually I can take another cruise in my life.
