  • The Seldom Scene is an American bluegrass band that formed in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland.[1] The band's original line-up comprised John Starling on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Auldridge on Dobro and baritone vocals, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Tom Gray on double bass, and John Duffey on mandolin; the latter three also provided backing vocals. Together they released their debut studio album, Act I, in 1972, followed by both Act II and Act III in 1973.

An important addition to the performance library of one of the very best bluegrass bands - ever, thanks Jan Johansson. John Duffey's arrangement of Darlin' Corey, especially as done on the album, is a masterpiece - gripping. Best heard with earphones, or over quality speakers in a very quiet space. So good it almost compels "repeat."

I worked at National Geographic with Tom Gray in the mid-70s a few years after this recording. He introduced me to canoeing in the rivers and streams around DC and bluegrass music. I saw the band frequently at the Red Foxx Inn in Bethesda and the Birchmere in Arlington. Seeing them live was amazing.

One if not' my all time favorite bluegrass band.
John was a great musician/ tenor singer. On this recording , his high tenor voice over powers the rest of the band in the mix. Would like to have heard him more in the background.

He was one of the most powerful singers ever in bluegrass ... or any other style for that matter...John Duffey and Jimmy Martin would have made one powerful tag team,,,
