Actually, the 1919 version isn't from that period of time. The first version of the Teufelslied was sung by the German Soldiers in Spain, around 1937.

I think "Wir pfeifen auf unten und oben" would be more accurately translated into "We don't give a damn about below and above" or "We don't care about below and above". Cheers!

The US did a bunch of helmet tests, and avoided using the current, modified Stahlhelm style that's so popular in Kevlar and similar materials these days for solely political reasons until the closing years of the Cold War - if you're going to make an open-faced helmet, that is just a very good way to do it, and do it well.
