David Jones i think the artistic liberty is ensured by the endless combinations of words. Isnt it beautiful what words you can create to express certain feeling or just new inventions? Of course, if you keep to the rules in a grammar book, youll find it rather unartistic. But the dichterische freiheit is even acknowledged by teachers, so you can literally shift words in sentences around and create a new order. I dont think that you are bound to boredness in german, but you can do whatever you want.

Mein Ur-Opa blieb im zweiten Weltkrieg in Russland verschollen als Soldat. Mein Opa (vor kurzem mit 87 verstorben) zeigte mir ein Foto von seinem Papa auf einem Motorrad mit Beiwagen von der wehrmacht. Ein absolut gutaussehender Mann und dazu die Uniform einfach nur krass. Hätte ihn sogern kennengelernt. Oma lebt noch zum glück...aber ich möchte mal nichts weiter erben als dieses foto. Ruhet alle in Frieden, egal welcher Nation die Soldaten angehört haben.

One of my great grandfathers only positive memories during ww2 was saving a big group of German soldiers. They were captured and about to be executed when he stepped in and stopped it. That’s the only ww2 story he could ever tell without zoning out or looking/feeling guilty. He passed July 4th 2015 of all days. Miss that man

Was this the western front?If so,he stopped a war crime as the Soviets didn't sign the 1929 Hague convention which prevented this stuff but the Allies and Germany did.

As a Serb i must say that for German soldiers in ww1 i have nothing but respect since when we were attacked from 3 sides Germans even though our enemies treated us with respect and even laid a monument that still stands in Belgrade it says in both German and Serbian "hier ruhen Serbischen helden" or "here rest Serbian heroes" or "овде почивају Српски јунаци".

When ever I listen to these songs I feel great sadness. Especially when listening to world war 2 songs. Millions of men went forward into battle and did not return. And for what?
They did not deserve to die out on the steppes of Russia, on the beaches of Normandy, in the French fields, in the deserts of Africa, on the Philippine Isles, or on one of the worlds many oceans.
Those men deserved better then to be sent to die hundreds of miles away from loved ones in a field covered in their comrades dismembered limbs. Together we must forge a new generation built on the past, remembering our mistakes so we do not repeat them.

There’s a scene in Band of Brothers during the advance into Germany where Major Winters turns to Captain Nixon and says “even in defeat they still know how to march with pride”. Every time I hear this song I picture that scene and can’t help but agree with the Majors statement.

I am not too much of a librarian addict, when it comes to books, but I really value the time I did spent with that book.

This song should remind us what war is about, it is about suffering, pain, death and destruction. WW1 was a meatgrinder nothing more, there was no winner at all just families crying for their sons. Dieses Lied spiegelt perfekt die Moral der Deutschen Armee in den späteren Jahren des Krieges, sprich 1917-1918 wieder. Wunderschön aber trotzdem auf seine Art und Weise traurig.

Deutschland hat den großen Krieg nicht verloren sondern am 9.11.1918 durch Revolution in Hamburg beendet.
Die Länder die Deutschland plündern wollten, haben keinen Fuß auf deutschen Boden geschafft. Wie der Vorredner schon sagte, hat die Kapitulation andere Gründe.

I'm not German, but I heard somewhere that Germany isn't able to celebrate nationally due to the German Empire and The Third Reich being MEGA nationalist countries. My guess is the modern German government doesn't want the same to happen.
