  • You will learn all the steps to restore your butcher block to its original glory and feel confident in this easy DIY project.
I installed a butcher block kitchen island a few years ago and maintained it with mineral oil and butcher block conditioner, but over time the top lost its sheen and became quite dirty. This video will detail all the steps needed to refinish your butcher block island or countertop and get it ready for finish. The process is very easy and you can do it yourself with minimal tools.

Thank you Tyler. Very helpful video which provided me with easy-to-follow DIY tips. Going to finally refinish our butcher block island. Have been putting it off for years but now I feel like it is a manageable project.

Heads up that using an orbital sander to round off the edges I immediately gouged the wood at the edge. Was able to fix it for the most part by sanding by hand but would not recommend that method for the edges. It’s too intense and unless you have some serious finesse it’ll probably be ugly.

For anyone asking, you can use really any kind of sander. Just know that anything with dust extractor is going to make your paper or pads last longer. Palm sander will work but make sure you follow the step about going with the grain. It will likely just be a little pricey getting all the pads you need but so is buying a new sander for a project you only do every few years. Just use what you have. The sander he is showing is probably one of the nicest orbital sanders on the market.

Sorry for not responding I took a break from TH-cam. I hope your project turned out good. Jake is correct any type of sander will work and the methods I outlined in the video still apply. This was actually my second time refinishing the butcherblock. The first was with a Dewalt palm sander hooked up to a shop vac and I got the same end result. The only difference was that I used a ton of sanding discs and got dust all over the kitchen. Better tools don't make you a better woodworker and you definitely don't need them. They just make things easier and faster.

"Sand along the grain of the wood"... Well.. being a rotating sanding machine, "sanding along the wood grain" is going to be pretty difficult since sanding obviously occurs in all direction as the head rotates. Slowly moving the machine along the wood grain has only a very small effect in that respect.

Your right, but it does help if something gets caught in your sanding disk and causes a imperfection. It will blend in with the wood grain better if your moving your sander with the grain. Like you said if you're moving at a snails speed it's all irrelevant.
