    Cannonball Adderley Greatest Hits was my first jazz album I ever bought in 9th grade back in 1971. I was just learning Alto. It wasn't the notes he was playing because I didn't know what they were. It was his tone and his inflections. I was mesmerized by how he caressed every single note. It was as if he was making love to sound. Cannonball had so much heart and such a pure soul. I wore that album out. Decades later I got an unexpected phone call from Yusef Lateef who I thought had passed away. I did an impersonation of Cannon saying " And Brother Lateef carries on in a grand fashion". His intro to " Jive Samba". Well I must tell you that Yusef cracked up. He tee heed like a little kid. After that we became close friends and pen pals for several years. One week in 9th grade band we actually had Nat and Julian's high school band teacher from Rosevelt High in West Palm Beach. Man was he tough and scary. I wish you would do a video on Cannonball's sound because there is no one who had his tone.

    Cannonball and Phil Woods are my alto "Gods". I would love to hear you do a similar thing with one of Phil Woods's solos.

    I'm no sax player, I'm studying guitar but I do like saxophone and this video (a mix of blues and be bop) is just great. What a fine musician, really !

    How about that G minor blues scale over the IV chord though!! He’s the best. 😮

    That is a great way to think about it. Is there a formula like that for rhythm changes?

    My daughter just started the tenor sax, she already plays the b flat n bass clarinet, was told to tell her to listen to cannonball n Coltrane to help her with tone. Thx!!

      Love this! She's clearly getting the right sounds in her ears at an early age :)

    Thanks for sharing that! It is so good to hear an explanation that translates what the musician's sound really was..much easier to make sense of it and then (hopefully) integrate into playing

    I've noticed this pattern too, but find it a bit too predictable/formulaic, especially by Sonny Stitt. He can rarely resist playing a ton of notes over the last 4 bars, which often seems to spoil the groove of the first 8. It's also often used in bar4. I think what makes Cannonball's blues nice and also unique is his note selection in the non-bebop, his pitch/gissandos and timing. Everyone does that bebop stuff and it's not really that interesting - a computer can be programmed to write that.

    Wonderful lesson Nick...can I ask what metal mouthpiece are you using on the alto?

    • @nickmainella
      @nickmainella  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Phil! It's actually a 3D printed SYOS MP (Steve Kortyka model). It does look like a metal one though...
