panfriedd I think you mean BC. I was watching Ancient Aliens a few years ago and there was an ancient depiction of a giant, in a t-shirt, khaki shorts, and a ball cap banging a gong from 200 yds. Personally I believe he is a timeless force that has been ridding the world of two liters since the beginning of time.
Thanks for taking some for team. You're spot on the recoil. I bought my 1st .44 Mag, a 6" 29, over 30 years ago. I don't even care much for full 240gr out of my 4" 629. The video just can't communicate the punch of the full .44 loads, even in a light piece. I have been on a .44 kick lately, and chose the 4" 629PD (25.5 oz) over the 2.75 69, for non-bear country back up & shotshell snake control. My EDC is a HK VP9, and for bear country, I like a G20. Let's not forget, the .44 Mag is a hunting round, and is overpowered for self defense on human threats. .44 special is plenty for SD, especially considering the flinching & follow up issues firing a very high recoil load. As a long time .44 fan, I concur with your typically excellent assessment.
Over the years I have loaded everything from light specials with 180 grain cast up to a hot 300 grain bullet that I call your own personal earthquake load. It would drop a dog pack . Mostly I would shoot a very heavy special or a light magnum. Now I don't have any due to arthritis.
Someday, I hope I have access to a range like yours. What a joy it must be, to be able to step outside your house and do some trigger pulling anytime you feel the urge. God bless you guys, and especially littlest Hickock. I need a wheel gun in my life, but I think I might want a 6-shot .357/.38, and probably an off brand for poor folks. Thanks for the video, guys. Would love to hang out with you both on the Hank Strange daily broadcasts sometime.
Please do a review on the .44 magnum Ruger RedHawk Kodiak 2.75". You reviewed the 8-shot. 357 version, but it was originally designed for .44mag. A comparison of all snub-nose .44s would be interesting.
Nice, nice, nice. Still not as nice as my S&W Mod 25 4 inch in 45 LC. That is man stopper enough for me. Kept me alive for a lot of years in Detroit PD. Have a good day guys.
Hickok45 with all of your 44 magnum videos you have influenced me to go buy the S&W 69 4 1/4 inch barrel in another of your videos as well the 2 3/4 inch version in this video. I'm looking forward to both. Hopefully will pick both up sometime next week.
I picked one of these beauties today! I have some long barrel revolvers and a 4 inch 357. I decided I needed a short barrel revolver and decided this is the one. I love crazy guns so I had to get one.
Slogg Znorg I only have one revolver, a Ruger GP100. I really want a Colt Python but honestly I'd settle for any of the Colt Serpent series revolvers, nice guns
i'm not recoil sensitive either. Nothing has smacked my hand as hard as shooting a 629 snub performance center Smith and Wesson 44 mag, not very fun. Absolutely love this channel, thanks for all the info and great entertainment hickock45.
Just ordered one! I'm also a fan of snub nose revolvers - the charter arms bulldog was my first handgun. I've had that for about 5 years and it's time for an upgrade! Thanks for the video, guys.

Cheers for putting up these videos mate! It's awesome to have these educational videos of firearms. As an Australian it's great to have this knowledge as firearms aren't as common here. Keep up the awesome work!
Always a worth while video to watch. I love my 29 model and shot a coffee can full at the range last time. I really enjoy shooting a 44 special pitbull charter arms 5 shot. This might fit that niche nicely.
Some people don't like the black controls on Smiths guns but I think combined with that grip it is just a beautiful gun. I think I am going to get the 66 for my wifes home defense gun. She doesn't like semi-autos so any excuse for getting another beautiful wheel gun, I'll take it.
Nice revolver. Was going to buy a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44Special but think this video just changed my mind. I have always liked short barrel big bore revolvers. I have a .41Magnum but have never owned a .44Mag. Great video as always.
Ahhh, just what the doctor ordered, a day of revolver therapy. I've been watching all the revolver videos that I could on this "day-of-rest" since ammo is at a unbelievable premium these days.

I have the 329 and love it. Wish they made a Scandium & Titanium version of this Model 69. The shorter barrel and the thinner cylinder would be an incredible hiking gun for bear country.
Great video as always!! As an owner of both the 3" 629 and the 2.75" 69, I was more than curious to see what the Great Hickok had to say. I must admit I agree completely. My range routine with either is Light 44 Spl, Med 44 Spl, Hot 44 Spl, Light 44 Mag, Med 44 Mag, done. I never go above that. Totally agree with a "great 44 Spl that is completely 44 Mag capable". Need to order up the Rosewood Pack grips from Bud's for my EDC of the 69. That and an EZ loader strip with another 5, and I never feel the need for more of anything. So many options with only one firearm!
Every gun's a great shooter on this channel. He could be using a drinking straw and paper wads and that stinkin gong would be ringing. Don't know how he does it.
I picked up one of these and he’s right. Full power magnums can put a hurt on your wrist but they are still fun to shoot. a Pachmayr rubber grip helped a lot. Handloading does make this gun extremely versatile. shooting hot 44 specials or light 44 mags is a blast.
Great video, as usual! I've been watching your videos since almost the start (watched the vids on shooting the G26 long distance many times when I was looking for my first firearm). You've got me hooked on revolvers, for sure. Everyone should have at least one centerfire -- they are fun and help you improve your skills. Plus, they are just classic. Thank you!
I grew up on Mattel Shootin' Shell revolvers and Hubley, too. Now, after a 50 year break, I'm looking at revolvers again. I sure missed a lot of shooting time at the range!
Many years ago, back in the 80's I bought a 629 with an unfluted cylinder and a 2.5" barrel, no etching on the cylinder new from Smith. I believe it was a pre-Backpacker. I eventually sold it, wish I had it back, never seen another but I was young, didn't know about the 44 Special and it was a bruiser with full house 44 Magnum loads. Liked the revolver, traded it for a 6.5" 629 Classic. What a difference that extra 4" of barrel made, it started my handgun hunting career here in NYS, accounted for dozens of deer over the years. I just can imagine what that 629 is like to shoot, not pleasant but I handload now so it wouldn't be an issue. That 2.75" tube IMHO although not bad just looks a little weird, a 3" or 3.25" tube would make it look more balanced.
Good video, Hickok. Would love to have one of those. For many years my EDC revolver was a 3" 44 spcl. Only used handholds in it. 215gr Lyman SWC at 760 fps chronographed. I had a lot of confidence in that setup. :)
I've shot a number of 44Mag's over the years but far prefer the 38/357 guns. Then again, I don't live in an area populated by grizzlies. Great video as always!
Nice! Maybe not the best choice as a personal defense handgun in the house or on the street, but this would be really good as protection while in the woods.
This was my first firearm purchase. I absolutely love this revolver. I have a thing for Smith & Wesson Snub-nose revolvers and I love the big bore cartridges .44 .45 Colt but also love the Magnums.... ...357 magnum. .44 magnum . I really appreciate your videos. Hope to see my second firearm purchase the Smith & Wesson model 327 PC 2" barrel. Love this gun. Again thank you for all of your information and wisdom in your videos. I'll be watching for it.
I put VZ Alien square butt conversion grips on my 4.25" 69 Combat Magnum and put the factory grips from it on my 2.75" 69 Combat Magnum. The reason is I noticed the factory grip on the 2.75" didn't fit my hand well and was exponentially more uncomfortable to shoot magnum rounds than the 4.25". Both are more comfortable to shoot now which confirmed that the factory grip was the biggest culprit. Some may find it hard to believe but I put the same VZ Alien square butt conversion grips on my 329PD and made a huge difference in the shootability of that lite weight hard kicking 44 magnum.
I bought one about a year ago....Had to send it back for repairs. (It locked up after the third shot using PMC 240gr factory ammo) The best thing about this gun, is 1 box of ammo lasts for 2-3 rage trips. - It is in no way painful to shoot, but it is super comfortable either. (An indoor range can be exciting though, due to the fire and concussion) Now, with 300gr Hard Cast rounds, most will not will not one to shoot more than 1 cylinder.
You should try putting the grip from the Smith & Wesson 500 on it I put one on mine and it really helps I can even shoot the 300 grain Hornady no problem

@John and Hickok: Good morning. If you -- understandably -- prefer .44 Specials (or quite moderate .44 magnums) in an L Frame, then why not .45 Colt in a 625 N Frame Mountain Gun? The barrel is only 1.25 inches longer, a sixth round can be chambered, and (as you're entirely aware) .45 Colt loads can range from red hot (maybe not in a Mountain Gun) to very mild. I simply don't find the extra mass and size to be very substantial.
Tremendous! This is great! Just picked one up....have not shot it yet. I've always liked the Mountain Gun by Smith...had one back in the 90's....so when I saw this one....why not? Probably be a great one to have on the trail. Appreciate your vids and time you spend on these...
I remember that awhile ago, Hornady made a Critical Defense variety of .44 magnum that was about the power level of a .357 magnum. It would be nice if they brought that loading back.
Hi hickock45, I was hoping you could help give me some advice. I have the smith and Wesson 69 2.75 inch barrel. I bought it for a hunting side arm and bear defense in the back country, but I’ve found that I enjoy shooting quite a bit at the range too (in 44 special, not mag of course). I’m thinking about trading in for the model with the longer barrel to help with accuracy and recoil when shooting magnums. I know it will be heavier so harder to pack and increase draw and target aquisition time, but I think what is sacrificed there could be made up with improved accuracy and a faster follow up shot. It would also be more fun to shoot at the range i think. Having shot both, do you think there is a discernible difference in accuracy and recoil between both?
I like shooting! Big guns, little guns! I agree with you about lighter loads in little guns. I'll shoot magnums all day in a full size revolver but I think 9mm is too snappy for a pocket pistol. Little guns feel like they're gonna jump out of your hand with bigger calibers. You want them to sit snug in your hand for quick follow up shots.
would like to see one of those BFR revolvers chambered in .30-30 reviewed, not sure who makes it, seen one or two of them at gun shows and I've been interested in them.
I own an earlier S&W 44 magnum Model 29-4 2.5 inch barrel, brutal on the wrist.Funny, I've always shot 44 magnum, never thought of using 44 special, going to try that soon, though being rare I don't shoot it much.
Great video. Great gun. I really appreciate your diligence and your honesty. Now I am going to see if you have a Thompson Center Encore in .44 magnum in your video collection. Enjoy
Ozark Yeoman The S&W has potential, but your Pt111 is definitely not in the same league as a Glock. Criticizing someone for purchasing a Gen5 Glock and boasting about your cheaper imitation costing less is the real laughable thing. Pretty sure Smith gives Glock a $20 bill for every one of those sold. There’s reasons why the Pt111 is so inexpensive, a quick search of Taurus Pt111 problems on TH-cam and see why.
The "45" in Hickok45 is both his favorite caliber and the year of his last miss.

44 Special + P at the range (1000 fps x 240 gr) useful
44 Magnum lite for defense (1150 fps x 240 gr) perfect
44 Magnum for back woods (1300 fps x 240 gr) painful
Smiths answer to the Taurus tracker. Looks like a great hiking/backup hunting gun.
I got a really good chuckle just after 9:32
@John and Hickok:
Good morning.
"Nobody makes fun of 45 acp"
*recalling frequent chucklefuckery*
More like .45 AARP
Certainly not anyone who’s lived through being hit by one!
Man .44 special is tough to find sometimes
Love my model 69 with the 2-3/4" barrel shoots like a dream
Great video. This is a really interesting gun that I have been wondering about since Smith released it
I can’t find a holster for mine, Hickok45...what are you wearing? This video is the reason I bought mine...I love it!
We were all waiting for you to finally knock that ram down.
I had one of these last year and had to sell it. Financial reasons. 😢 Just bought another one. I was having withdrawals! 😂 This gun is awesome!
Tremendous! This is great! Just picked one up....have not shot it yet. I've always liked the Mountain Gun by Smith...had one back in the 90's....so when I saw this one....why not? Probably be a great one to have on the trail.
Appreciate your vids and time you spend on these...
I just got a model 69 and im shooting 240 grain Sierra loads and 5 is just right. Back down to 180 grain. Happiness aiis a big hole.
Even shooting vicariously through Hickok is a blast. I'm making another request for a SW 627 video.
"He got magnumized, magnumized" 😄
I remember that awhile ago, Hornady made a Critical Defense variety of .44 magnum that was about the power level of a .357 magnum. It would be nice if they brought that loading back.
*44 special, and it exists still, just not in nickel casings lately.
Hi hickock45,
I was hoping you could help give me some advice.
The 44. Magnum is a Monster.
What a beautiful muzzle flash!
I own one and have shot Buffalo bore 305 grain hardcast steel and had no problems with recoil
You sold me. Just bought one haha. Can’t wait to try her out. Thanks for the great videos.
Enjoy
Love my Bulldog Pug .44 Spcl, It's a beast
Hey Hickok45 hopefully we'll see the new glock 17 gen 5 on the compound soon? I ordered one from buds.
You've seen me obviously you haven't done any research to the changes they made...
Ozark Yeoman where you getting those firearms so cheap at? Lol
