I’m hoping to write fanfiction in future (once my parents finally decide wether I can have an Ao3 account or not) and was worried if the whole fanfic-posting system would be too complicated…. turns out it is quite simple as long as you know what tags to use and what all the categories mean. Another obstacle for me would‘ve been, that english isn‘t my first language, so getting to know the system would’ve been naturally even harder. My english is pretty good, but there‘ll always be some things that need to be cleared up. Anyway, thank you for the simple, yet detailed explanation :D

I'm not sure if you're talking about Genderbending. But regardless it's about traction for the tags. I'd suggest using original names for the couple, unless if it's a well-known adaptation. So that you get your story more widespread

now I can write my Son-swapping (Batman with Superboy, Superman's son and Superman with Robin, Batman's son) fanfiction crossover. Chapter 1 would have the son-swapping and the sons' first day. Chapter 2 would be about Superman encountering Robin and teaching him about relationships. Chapter 3 would include Superboy's inappropriate side in front of Batman. Chapter 4: Batman and Superboy's first victory. They team up with Spiderman (Marvel) and Geras (Mortal Kombat) and defeat the Demogorgon (from Stranger Things) Chapter 5: Superman and Robin's first victory. They team with the Mighty BLACKPINK Power Rangers (yes, I'm a Blink freak) and defeat Cinderblock. the final chapter (there would be more before that) would include a 4some since it's gonna be mature.
I know this is a year old but in case you still are wondering: use the html formatting. For italics, write and around your text. For example, if your summary is "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" and you wanted to italicize "brown fox," you'd directly write "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" into your summary. This should be the same for bolding and other things like that. Personally, I never write these out and instead just copy and paste it from the html text to my summary. Also I don't think formatting in rich text will save in the summary but I may be wrong
If your talking abt adding them to your fic, just type them. If there is no corresponding tag it will still add it on the fic. It may show up with what you typed with "-freeform" behind it
