  • Today's video is on how to make a DIY Self Wicking Tub! These tubs are becoming more and more popular with people who have very limited gardening space. They are self wicking, so no need to water as much, and they can be made out of almost any container, even as small as a 5 gallon bucket. It's all the same concept. We hope you enjoy the video!

    Air pruning the roots. That's what that air space does.
    Personally I put the fill tube on the opposite side of the pot. It creates less stagnet water over time by pushing older fluid to the hole side. Leon does it this way now
    Along with compost and potting soil, you can also add pest moss or coconut coir. That will help wick and retain water better.
    I also add chicken manure into the soil. It seems to work very well over the course of the season.
    The other thing I did was add a drain (bulkhead fitting at the bottom of the side of the pot) so I could flush and change out the water after the first 1¾ - 2 months, then monthly after that. I found a need for that (fitting/water change) after my first year when my plants started dying off in early September. Now they do well into late October/early November. You'll extend your growing season at least 1 month or more by getting rid of any stagnet water in the reservoir. There will be some of that no matter what type of fertilizer you use. It's was a little extra money, but we'll worth the investment.

    Love those tubs. I have friends in Kingston and everyone knows Leon's Garden Center! Just Google Self Wicking Tubs and Leon's many videos will pop up. He shows how to do it with various sizes and plants. If you use commercial landscaping fabric (not the cheaper household type) it will last for several years. Just add more fertilizer next year & loosen the soil. We are going to do some with butterfly plants this year. They work for more than our garden veggies!
    Sorry about the tire. Nobody is immune from something going wrong! Can't wait to see them Grow!

    Excellent video and concept. We went and visited Leon last year in the early spring and ended up getting 3 hour tour and gardening seminar 1 on1 with him, it was great learned so much from him. We switched over to wicking tubs last year and ended up with 25 plus tubs last year in both vegetable and flowers, plus another 10 plus in 5 gallon buckets with stayberrys and flowers. This year we have plans and most of the materials to more then triple that number. Another great benefit is they are very frugal on water, there is virtually no waste of water or fertilizer. I did some geeky garden math and figured out the cost of water per tub for the season, we are on city water, and cost per tub was minimal, under $1 filling once a week the entire season. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work and videos!!!

      @SawyerRidgeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! That is awesome! 😃
      That definitely sounds like something Leon would do. The man sure loves to teach! Lol
      That’s pretty cool about the amount of water these tubs use. I knew it was minimal, but less than $1, you can’t beat that! 👍

  • @PaleoBushman
    @PaleoBushman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you guys for posting this. People with backyards living in urban areas could do this very easily and that is so important. Most folks do not know that we are beginning to experience a grand solar minimum. This is a point to where the sun produces less light and heat as it goes through its own internal winter so to speak. This means that food will become more scarce than it has been in recent years. That doesn't mean that people will be starving to death. It just means that it may become more expensive to eat. It would be a great idea for everyone to do what you're doing here. It's very smart indeed. I have often done something slightly similar in large trash cans, while using them to grow potatoes and other vegetables. It really does work. In fact if you're just growing potatoes you don't even have to set up the wicking system like you do for other veggies. Regardless that wicking system is incredibly clever and can really expand what you're able to grow in a small space.

      Yes, these tubs are awesome! 😊 And you’re so right, we were thanking God because it could’ve been worse than it was. We were just thankful it was only a blow out and nothing wrong with the truck.

    Love you guys. You might want to talk to Leon about using that horse manure compost. In his very first video he talks about not using horse manure compost in your vegetable garden. It’s at about the 19 minute mark.

      Not everyone likes Jason crocker after the second time he slammed someone on TH-cam. I am boycotting all things crockets. Time will tell how long you will be his friend when he can't use you. Also Leon is a great source for doing the tubs. I buy my tubs from Walmart.
