    Man, same here. I was also 9 when I watched this game with my dad, a former Texas defensive end. I was sick to my stomach the rest of the week after this. 12 years later I still haven't gotten over this game. Still to this day I cannot understand why Major wasn't starting. My darkest night as a Longhorn. The good fortune of OU losing in Bedlam the weekend before, punching our ticket to Dallas for this game. Then Tenn upsetting Fla, assuring us a Rose Bowl berth with a win over a Buffs team we handily beat earlier in Austin. The early lead and about to go up 14 and then...disaster. Then Major nearly led us back, after being on ice the entire season, it seemed destiny favored us. But Colorado did just enough to hold on. The '08 Tech loss and the '09 Bama loss never stung me like this. Was finally made whole again in '05.

    • @maxjefferson4698
      @maxjefferson4698 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One of the darkest nights for me as well. I was 9 in 2001. Remember watching Chris Simms throw the game away in the first half.

    • @shayhicks7682
      @shayhicks7682 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think Colorado gets enough credit for this as well. Yes they were beaten handily in Austin a few weeks before this, but it was bobby pesavento's first start and we were just starting to discover what we had in Chris Brown. It all clicked against Nebraska, and that momentum carried over. Colorado was a really really good team that year.

    • @shayhicks7682
      @shayhicks7682 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Jefferson The month off between this game and the Fiesta Bowl Happened. Had the game been played a week after this game it would have been different. Maybe not the outcome but the score. But Oregon had a month to prepare for us. And its not like we had anything outrageous in terms of philosophy. We had really good running backs, a great O-line, two NFL receivers and a quarterback that took care of the ball. But our system was simple and was not going to fool anyone. Oregon had the speed to counter against that and with a month of prep time they just figured us out.

    • @dadestarmysteries255
      @dadestarmysteries255 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Ash-Petta: Not saying you're wrong, but not even winning their division is not the issue. It's possible for the best two teams in the conference to be from the same division-look at the Big 12 with OU-Texas when the north went to hell. Look at LSU-Alabama. In this case, Nebraska beat OU and was better. In turn OU was better than Texas so Colorado and Nebraska were the best two teams. They didn't win their conference, but division is meaningless. That said, not sure why you or any CU fans would care about that anymore. Nebraska got blown out by Miami and Colorado got clobbered by Oregon so obviously Colorado wouldn't have stood a chance against Miami, they just probably would have hung in there longer than Nebraska did.

      A lot of things hurt Colorado over the years. Bad Coaches, the inability to recruit kids out of California, Texas and Louisiana like they used to as schools like USC, UT and LSU got back on track, the CU administration not showing much support to the Athletic Program and the move to the PAC 10 has not been good because they really have no rivals in the PAC 10 like they did with Nebraska.

    Through the late 90s and the first decade of the 2000s. The Big 12 was just as good or even better then the SEC. with Oklahoma and Texas being on the top of their games. along with Nebraska, and even Colorado, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Missouri wasnt to shabby either. Now the Big 12 doesnt seem right with both Oklahoma and Texas being on the rebuild and the fact that the conference lost teams like Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado and Texas A&M.

    This game was one of 2 that put BS in BCS that year.
    1. Colorado DESTROYED Nebraska.
    2. Then (spoiler) Colorado beat Texas in the Big XII Title Game.
    Who did the BCS spit out as the Rose Bowl/Title Game? Miami (which rightfully deserved #1) and Nebraska, who didn't even WIN the Big XII.
    Colorado should've leapt over Nebraska after their win.
    There were 3 teams that should've gotten consideration to play Miami: Colorado, Oregon, and Tennessee.

  • @roberthernandez7012

    Wack Brown killed us. Lets talk about it. We were fixing to get the ball back. Colorado defense was exhausted. Mack calls for a punt block on 4th down with like 3 minutes left. We rough the kicker. They get the first down and kick a FG with 2 minutes left extending their lead to 9. That was the game. Alls we had to do was get the ball and we would have scored. Then in 08 in LBK, he was hurring Colt to hurry and score. We scored with too much time on the clock. Again the defense was exhausted, fozzy could have literally scored whenever he wanted. We scored to fast because wack was hurrying Colt. And ya know what happened after that. Wack cost us 2 looks at the ship. And in 09 against Nebraska he almost cost us another one when his clock management was horrible. If ut wasn't for the greatest kicker of all time. He would have cost that game too. What a terrible football coach Wack was. A great recruiter, a terrible coach.

    In reply to Kelley Stolze: I think you owe those Texas teams more respect. They only lost to Oklahoma (who were playing for national championships year in and year out at that time) for the most part. I know Chris Simms was a joke but he was his own player individually and didn't represent the team as a whole. Plus, Mack was too involved with the politics and never put the best players on the field off his available roster. Major Applewhite, as you can see from watching the game, is a fine example of this unfortunate waste of team talent. Hook Em'

      sboudreaux27 I'll say that they would have had a better shot at knocking off a legendary Miami team than Nebraska.

      sboudreaux27 Corn fan here: Anyone would have given Miami a better game than the Huskers did. Miami could have scored sixty but called off the dogs. We didn't belong in that game. That said, No one was beating the Hurricanes that year. Legendary team. The NFL roster they put out that year does not need mention. They probably should have won three in a row if not for the BCS (BCS putting FSU over UM in 2000 was just as egregious as Neb going in the next year) and the Big 12 officials in that title game with OSU in 2002.

    I remember that game. All Texas had to do was win this game and they would be in the National Championship with OU losing the week before to OSU and I think Florida lost in the SEC championship. Well Texas put the hurt on Colorado 4 years later putting up 70 points on Colorado.

      No need to use my Lord and savior’s name in vain. But I do agree with your comment on Simms, That and not recruiting Jameis Winston, when he was wanting Mack to extend a welcome but it Mack never did. Those are the two biggest mistakes Mack made while on the 40 acres. Jameis wanted to be a longhorn, instead he went to FSU and won a natty
