Completely different principles, completely different sound and there is a lot of confusion around the terminology so I want to address it.
A lot of sound redirectional devices in the marketplace are called sound diffusers and it's simply not true and I'm going to show you why. Let's look at some definitions first.
There are 5 conditions in a room that must be met, before you have a diffused sound field within your room. 99.9% of the rooms I'm in, they're simply not there, missing 1 or 2 or 3 of these 5 things and we'll get into those in the video.
So take a look at it and as always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Dennis
This channel is freaking gold!
K, Thank you for your support.
Another real interesting video. Ive seen quite a few rooms with the half round tube "bass traps" in the corners of the room. Most of the time used with no other treatment so the rooms still have acres of untreated hard surfaces and nice big glass windows. It seems to me that these tubes are becoming used more and more like a fashion accessories in many high end audio rooms. I think id rather have a bit of bass boom to take away from the screechy ear splitting trebble bouncing off the rock hard painted plaster walls and hard floors. Designed more for looks or fashion than sound reproduction
These video are really good, straight forward, honest, and loaded with information. I have a question about adding MLV between the joists of an exposed basement ceiling just to dampen the sound (just to deaden the sound)? Do you think that would work?
What is the frequency and amplitude of your noise issues? All materials are frequency and amplitude dependent.
THIS MAN KNOWS HIS STUFF!!!!!!!!!
For an expert in acoustics, the sound quality of your recordings is poor. It almost sounds like a bit of preverb added. What you're saying in the videos makes sense (and I have a diploma in sound engineering), but you need to pay attention to your own sound quality.
M, Criticism based upon opinion is worthless. Pay more attention to content and assist in the discussion of the topic at hand. Since you have a diploma in sound engineering, what can you add to the discussion on diffusion for our viewers?
Acoustic Fields I totally back you on this and thank you for sharing such a wealth of knowledge. I have recently purchased your DIY build plans and look forward to learning more about the subject. Your videos are a no nonsense classroom delivery which work really well. Thank you.
Mike Hersee Who cares? He’s teaching and selling. If Dennis was pitching gear for home podcasts I would agree with you completely. I come for the physics.
Why is the audio so bad on your videos? Bad mics?
T, These are old videos. Our new videos are shot in studios.
Acoustic Fields that is cool. Thank you for your reply
Sounds contradictory. You say it works in 2 directions at the same time but then say you have to mount it vertical for horizontal waves and horizontal for vertical waves (that's not 2 directions at the same time with same device). You talk about a flat frequency response but then you say its frequency response can be tuned to your purpose. Too much BS and drip feeding of facts = a lot of wasted time watching your videos for very little benefit. Please combine about 5 video's into one without most of the waffle. Show before & after results and a visual demo of the physics.
He means that the same device can be used either horizontally or vertically, or two devices doing both at the same time
The only thing I have against QRDs is that they sound almost totally lacking in character.
W, After 30 years of working with quadratic diffusion, we have found the opposite. The separation, definition, and clarity they add by reducing reflections adds to the overall presentation and increases the character of any environment.
Yeah, the tube re-issues don't have the same mojo as the originals. They should put a 1073 INSIDE it. Now that's character!
