Hi Julie, thanks so much for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! I am so happy you are enjoying the videos and that they are helpful. Are you currently teaching online because of the Corona virus situation?
Mooncake English Yeah, and the worst is that our school is not capable to teach online , that’s hard to adapt our classes, moreover some of our students have never had online classes, and those who only 4 are too small for it😂
@@ziyouderen1111 Yes! I think this situation has caught everyone out and schools are trying their best to adapt. Generally, I don't think that online lessons works well for younger students, but I guess schools are doing their best to provide for parents. But it is a big learning curve for all those teachers that are used to classroom based teaching! 😂
Helpful! I’ve begun doing online classes during the recent Covid surge here in Taiwan. This video has given me some great ideas for how to keep students engaged during the online ESL class. One more idea that I thought of is that I can run around the classroom (I teach online from a classroom) while they say the vocabulary as a sort of race to see who gets done first. One question I have for you is, how do you reward your students over the internet? Stickers and points can’t go through the camera!
Hi Tim, thanks for watching! For online reward systems I tend to use an A-B method. I take a police car and police station (others work well, choose something your students are interested in) and as the children do well the car gets moved close to the police station. They are usually happy to get the police car to the station by the end of the lesson, it feels like an achievement 😊 I hope that helps!

great ideas... dragon fruit [most kids from the States wouldn't know that even in English, lol] we have yellow dragon fruit here (Peru), but it is too expensive for local kids to even eat... but gave me a great idea to bring a couple to class and share it with the students [after they say it of course].

Hello dear, I could not understand (4:57) when you say "Next pick another flashcard roll the die and go again", it means another new vocabulary flashcard or number flashcard. (?) I like the positive energy to give to your videos.
Hi Romy! Actually, both, so you would pick another flashcard and roll the die again to see how many times the student will repeat it. You can keep going until you practiced all the words you wanted to review, or until it's time to move on to the next activity. I hope that helps make the game a bit clearer 😊

Do you have some tips? The boys live in South America, I live in California.
Hi! You are great! I`m new in this, I will start teaching online next week and your videos saved me as usual. Your channel is really helpful. please can you please suggest which energizer is the best as a warm up. Also, can You for example make a power point on how to introduce yourself for children. I guess this will be really helpful and might be needed as a guide . Thanks in advance
Hi Ali, thanks so much for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! I'm so glad the channel has been helpful. Regarding warm ups, it's best to choose activities based on what you think your class will enjoy and what they are currently learning. I have actually made two videos with online warm up ideas, you can find them here: th-cam.com/play/PLWnDxOCiXGirk3gHdlA_GEd21Mh4YzwOl.html Regarding introducing yourself, again it would depend on the class you're teaching. If they are beginner students, it would best to keep things simple, focus on students learning your name and building trust. You want the student to know that learning with you is fun! If students have a slightly higher level and you know they will know some basics, you can introduce your name, favorite food, colors, or other information you know students will be able to follow. But, it still needs to be fun so think about fun ways to present that information in a way that will interest the student. I hope that all helps! 😊

Hey Jemma! Such great tips, thank you! I teach Cantonese as a second language to children, so most ESL teaching ideas are transferable. I have to teach children from 4 to 13 and occasionally adults, so I constantly have to change the way I speak and teach according to different ages and ability. Can be challenging but I have enjoyed the challenge so far. I spent all the time planning activities but neglected the intangible- smiles and looking at the camera instead of the screen. Thank you for your reminder! I can imagine it would be a lot of fun to be in your class. Reminds me of my ESL teachers when I was a kid in Hong Kong! Keep rocking and making great videos! (and eating mooncake!) Kahei

They are usually happy to get the police car to the station by the end of the lesson, it feels like an achievement 😊
I hope that helps!
Hi, Mooncake:) That was Helpful. Thanks for sharing. Just started ESL online teaching because of COVID-19 as well.

great ideas... dragon fruit [most kids from the States wouldn't know that even in English, lol] we have yellow dragon fruit here (Peru), but it is too expensive for local kids to even eat... but gave me a great idea to bring a couple to class and share it with the students [after they say it of course].

Hello dear, I could not understand (4:57) when you say "Next pick another flashcard roll the die and go again", it means another new vocabulary flashcard or number flashcard. (?)
I like the positive energy to give to your videos.
Hi Romy! Actually, both, so you would pick another flashcard and roll the die again to see how many times the student will repeat it. You can keep going until you practiced all the words you wanted to review, or until it's time to move on to the next activity.
I hope that helps make the game a bit clearer 😊

I am a new ESL teacher, tutoring 2 brothers online. They are 7 and 9, and I am a little concerned that some things will be too easy for the 9 year old or too hard for the 7 year old, although I suppose I could try and have the older brother help with the younger one, they do actually get on with each quite well.
I have actually made two videos with online warm up ideas, you can find them here: th-cam.com/play/PLWnDxOCiXGirk3gHdlA_GEd21Mh4YzwOl.html
Regarding introducing yourself, again it would depend on the class you're teaching.
Hope your safe and well, thanks as always
Thanks Gary, you too! ❤️

(and eating mooncake!)

Hi, thanks so much for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! You're right, most teaching skills are transferable to other languages. Teaching such a wide variety of age groups can be very challenging and as you mention, you need to constantly plan and adjust your lessons. But, those experiences can really help you grow as a teacher. Well done for taking on the challenge!
