I have always liked this lens. The EF-M 55-200mm lens is a, "Great!" travel lens. Combined with the EF-M 18-45mm lens, ( I dislike the term, Kit Lens, it incorporates an inherent optical prejudice that is not welcome these days,) and you have a lens combination that covers all bases: except significant low light situations, (which can be mitigated often with a tripod;) or closeup photography, (add some closeup lens attachments or extension helicoid to your kit.) The whole point is to shoot within your means. When the demands of your personal photography needs exceed the capabilities of your equipment? Then it's time to look for alternative equipment... AND, like you said, some of that limitation is has nothing to do with the lens, its body-based... and sometimes, photographer-based.
I was thinking the same thing about not liking the term "kit lens". Like it's somehow so inferior to the faster low light focal length lenses. My 15-45mm does quite well in my opinion. I can print anything 20 by 30 without a problem. Low light performance is over rated.
l have the M50. l wonder if the lens will have better AF tracking with that body? But l'll probably get the 55-250 STM because l have the adapter and l like the extra focal length range. And you can get a new(probably gray market)55-250 STM on Ebay for 140usd.
Would you recommend this lens for the newer more refined EOS M50? And is it worth it over a much bigger (and a bit more expansive) lens like the Tamron 70-210 just for the ease of use and portability? Many thanks for the review 5 years later!
Dustin. I have a M50 Mark II. I traded my 77 D in for the mirrorless system. I have an adapter. My question is which lens is sharper the 55 to 250 or the 55 to 200 I have the 55 to 250 lens. The reason I ask is your review on the 55 to 250 Canon lens was so great. I went out and bought it and to this day I'm very happy I did. It's very sharp so I want to know if you're saying the 55 to 200 is a sharper lens?? I have had very little trouble with autofocus in the M50 Mark II and I shoot a lot of birds and butterflies and I don't seem to have much of a problem but as far as something coming straight at me that I have not tested on the mark II. Thanks for the great video. Keep up the good work
yet another great review - thank you Dustin. I have an M50 with a ef-m 15-45 and a ef-m22/f2. I am now considering between ef-m 18-150 and 55-200 for travel and sports and cannot decide - assuming the quality is comparable the 55-200 fits the "gaps" perfecty giving me contiguous cover from 15-200. The 18-150 on the other hand would make for an (almost) perfect all-in-one walkabout lens just missing out on the 15-18mm range. The 15-45/55-200 combo sounds great but would require more frequent lens changes.. Any suggestions? BTW I also have EF85/1.8 and EF 70-200 f/4L IS with adaptor but looking for lightweight holiday solution.
I really like the 18-150mm. It gives up surprisingly little image quality loss while giving great versatility. The 55-200 is slightly better optically.
My eosm100 has dp af and its a night and day difference between it and my eosm. i Used eos m100 shooting my kids basketball with 50mm stm and its fast and deadly accurate.
One question about this camera. I love it so far. Do you have to turn it off after each shot? When I am walking I can hear it refocusing with the lcd screen on. Surely that kills the battery.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Awesome Dustin. Now my question is when can I enable this function now that I have had this camera for a couple of weeks. Just testing it and it seems awesome except when I want it to stop focusing as I walk! Any tips for that or should I just leave it disabled? I have read and examined all of your reviews of 2013 for the M series. No one on youtube seems to address why continous AF exists. Jesus fucking christ dude, just fucking google the prices and stop asking all the time!!! FUCK!!
Why would you buy a 55-200mm when you can buy a compact with 720mm zoom ?
Because the image quality of that compact cannot compare in the least.
Julgo que vou gostar.
prefer the 70 300 II plus a speedbooster, its much sharper
Perhaps, but that is a much larger lens and thus comes with it's own liabilities.
really nice video and i going to get the EF-M 55-200mm lens for my birthday.
Enjoy!
Stick it on an M50, that will track the dog. Nice dog BTW
That's true. Canon's tracking in the M series has come a long way.
Waste of money 👎🏻
I tend to steer people towards the 18-150 instead.
is this lens good for the canon eos m3 or no? because if not i will buy the eos m5 and the lens 55-200
It works well on it, though I think it will work better on the M5. The M5 should have a better focus system and EVF
great insight. thanks for the review.
You're welcome.
