The way you make these reviews has helped me a lot in to understanding how to use the lens with the best camera settings for optimal picture quality, keep up the good work !
The EOS-M had been my first "legit" camera, and it came with the 18-55. Unfortunately it had been damaged in a motor accident. The lens was virtually unscathed, but (somehow) the camera sensor suffered damage that according to canon was "infeasible to repair". As a result, I then upgraded to the M6 which came with the 15-45. Personally I prefer using the 18-55. I typically enjoy more zoomed in photography anyway, but it more just comes down to usability (am I using the word right?). The retractible locking feature in the 15-45 just feels like it gets in the way and creates unnecessary steps, meanwhile with the 18-55 all you have to do is turn on your camera and you can get right into shooting. But that's just my personal preference.
Thank you so much for this review, I was about to ship my 15-45mm to canon service center for soft pictures at 45mm but thanks to your review, I learned it's soft only when close-focusing and not when focusing on a far subject. I was doing test shots indoor and was focusing quite close on a subject. You saved me shipping cost and even more importantly, all of the hassle I would have gone through if not this review.
If you use your M camera for selfies or vlogging, you might prefer the wider angle of the 15-45. If you want the lens with a little more reach and a little better for portraits or bokeh (55mm at f5.6, vs 45mm at f6.3), then you'd want the 18-55. But as you said, there is not too much in it. The 18-55's are pretty cheap these days, less than $100
15-45mm is very good for day light shooting. shooting in f7 to f8 with polarizer filter takes amazing pictures. good for outdoor shooting. it can take good sharp potraits with lower appreture but use good flash to recover brightness of subject.
Both lenses need a looooot of light for the photos to look good. I personally detest the lock / unlock feature on the 15-45mm. 18-55 is a stop faster at long end and has better build.
15-20mm is my favorites focal length for landscapes photography especialy on 15-45 kit lens, but if you guys have a eos m3 and go for portrait you need to upgrade 50mm with adapter and Its work pretty well for me
Perfect timing! M5 just announced and I own the M3 with the 22mm. I was on the fence with this and the 18-55. Thank you for taking the time in reviewing this Chris.
Got the 18-55 and 22mm f2.0 lens. The 15-45 is nice for just the wide angle alone (24eq) and comes with stabilization. So I assume up to 1/8s shutter to be possible handheld. Think of museum or generally indoors situations.
Great reviews. Based on your lens reviews I bought a used Canon EOS M with the 18-55 kit lens, for 130 euros, and I'm very happy with it. It's such a fun small and inconspicuous kit.
BRILLIANT - I was wondering what to do with this lens which I got with Canon M50. I watched a number of reviews for this lens category, but none of them talked about the lens!!! - In this review - it's well-organized content, it's more than a review; let me take it as a lesson - THANKS
l just got the M50 with this lens. To combat poor image quality with closeups, l mounted a 49-52mm step up adapter and the Nikon 4T close up lens. Then manually focused the lens about 2/3 of the way to it's minimum focus distance. Took a few test shots with that setup and they were pretty sharp.
Thank you Christopher. I bought an M10 for infrared which I haven't tried out yet. I bought the Viltrox adapter but was thinking of buying a dedicated lens ivo how front heavy EF lenses are. You have helped the decison as to which. By the way, excellent taste in cider. If you're ever in Aberdâr, come and visit
thank you for the review, its helped me alot to consider when buying Canon M10. because i was using Sony a5000 with its 16-50mm lens but the OSS (image stabilization) doesn't work well as Canon did especially for the kit lens, imho.
Great reviews. I intend to take either canon eos m50 or sony a6000 but having seen your reviews about the quality of the lens of their kits i am a bit confused. Which one do you recommend? I will use it more for photos than videos and in the future i will buy a new lens, but for the moment i will use what is offered iny the kit. Thank you
Chris welcome back to old familiar ground reviewing Canon lenses. Looks like Canon wants us to buy both lenses each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I am not a potential Canon EOS buyers so these lenses won't interest me. But it is good to know where the current technology is taking us, from this review there is really no a major breakthrough. Their performance is comparable to its competitors. Review more lenses like the new Fuji 23mm f2.0 and more importantly compared to the older 23mm f1.4. This will be very interesting.
@@christopherfrost dang, I was looking at that or the 28-70 2.8-4 by sigma. but I'm thinking I should just save some more for an L lens...esp that 70-200 2.8 for my image stabilized telephoto portraits but also maybe something wider as well... I'm always up for suggestions...
Im using this lens and loved it.. its not an indoor lens tho but if you have good enough light then its decently sharp imho.. and this review is spot on.. its true that it can shoot close distance shot at 45mm but it has poor iq... this lens is good enough.. you just have to know how and when to use it, understand its strong and weak points..
Hello Christopher, thank you for this video. I really liked the simplicity and visuality of your explanation, makes it easy to understand. so I'm a new owner of EOS M3 with a 15-45 lens and from your video I understood its greatest for landscape photos and that is great for me tho I also need a lens for close up such as to make pics of jewelry and nature close ups. would you be so kind to advise me on a lens for this model and purposes. I did tried to find some answers on your channel tho there is so much information, might take hours to go through :) thank you in advance.
Hey Chris, that's probably true, it still sucks considering it probably cost $1 to make and weights less than 5 grams. I wish they make a constant f4 or less zoom.
With how cheap nifty fifties area with great aperture. The kit lens is literally a budget wide angle lens, which is why the 15-45 might be considered over the 18-55. Regardless, these kit lenses are listed online for sale EVERYWHERE they're gonna be as cheap as water soon lol
How do you bring the lense back into the lens compartment all the way? It doesn't go all the way back in. Is that normal once you take out a lens and play with the zoom?
Is it me or this lense is sharper than the 18-150mm? Between those two, which one would you recommend? I am looking for a lense to travel with, so portability and versatility are both appealing.
Should I choose 15-45 or 18-150mm? Is there a big difference between those two lenses? I found 18-150mm at 180 Euro more than the other. I have to get the 11-22mm as well.
Hi there! I have a Canon 60D and I've been using it with a lot of fun for 3 years. Now, I make videos myself and I LOVE a blurry / bokeh background, but I just can't seem to find a good lens that isn't ridiciously expensive (above €500 - ish) and where the MM isn't too high since my room isn't very big, so the distance can't be a lot. So what I'm looking for exactly is a lens that can be quite close to me (about 1 to 2 meters max away from me) and where I can get the desired bokeh effect. I've been watching so many videos of you and whole lot more people and I just can't find one. Can you please help me? I'm starting to lose my mind with all this information
Disappointing, my Olympus has this same kind of locking kit lens and it frustrated me to no end. You either walk around with the camera turned on and the lens deployed all the time or you miss shots because there are to many steps required to get the camera ready. I finally bit the bullet and bought the olympus PRO lens. I have made some very nice photos with the 18-55 on my EOS M, it is a very nice lens, and it works as soon as you turn on the camera, no additional steps.
This is one reason why I like the kit lens on my Sony a6000. It's a power zoom lens that extends automatically when you turn the camera on, and retracts when you turn it off.

Don't buy this lens if you wish more than a point-n-shoot setup. The wide end suffers from horrible distortion and softness, the middle range is usable only during the day and the long end is always too dark for portraits. Also the retracting mechanism is pretty annoying. Buy the amazing EF-M 22mm if you wish a lightweight setup and splendid picture quality or EF-M 11-22 if you need a wide lens. This 15-45 will only discourage you from using your camera.
Karel Mačalík I'm thinking it also it'll be heavy but I really like the tokina for ultra wide angle shots and for travel photography and the M6 body. So it's just me who have to adjust with its weight
Thank you for reviewing this lens, Mr. Frost. But is there any other lens as wide, sharper with lower aperture out there that can win this lens? I am using an eos m3 body and i own m-mount adaptor.
Great review as always, I have just bought the Canon M100 with the 15-45mm for £300, as I am mainly into landscape photography this review is very helpful, can't wait to try it out.
Great review, keep up the good work. One suggestion only, could You please in the future videos upload original test pictures somewhere, for those who want to compare lenses.
Has anyone a idea why the camera tries really hard to stay at f/5.6 at 15mm and f/6.3 at 45mm. It happens when I try to Focus over a „long“ distance. I tested it a bit and the camera is doing everything to avoid increasing or decreasing its aperture. I limited the iso to 3200 and it now wanting to shot at 1/15 hand held.
Iam getting really grainy shots while im shooting in auto mode with the 15-45 on my canon m50. Is this a lens issue?? What according to you is the issue here? Its been only 3 days since i got my m50 with this lens and i am not getting the image quality i expected with my setup. It would be really great if you could look into the issue
thanks again for the excellent review! i'm waiting for the eos m50, so need to decide whether to get the kit lens. after your review, i think probably not.
Great review Chris! One question about these two lenses though, do you know if they perform equally well with the EOS M5's Combination Image Stabilization?
Christopher Frost Photography Yes, I know, haha, sorry about that. I was just asking because on Canon's website [go to goo.gl/5zeMeP and scroll down to the Dogital IS details in "Features"] it says that maximum image stabilization is achieved when using either the new 18-150mm or the 15-45mm with the lens firmware update. So, I am worried that it might not work as well with my EF-M 18-55mm. What do you think?
Christopher Frost Photography I already own the 18-55 and the 22mm so I was planning on buying just the body and not buying the 15-45, but I guess I will have to just because of that. Really frustrating Canon! Anyway, thank you for immediately responding and I really like you videos, congrats!
Thank you. Which lens and setting do you recommend using the new Canon M50 Mark II for live streaming and wishing for a 'skin smoothing/ forgiving' effect as well as a 'lovely' bokeh background. I currently have the kit that comes with the 15-45mm lens. I would love to hear your remedy!
No lens adapter needed if you're mounting it to an M series camera. My 15-45 is exactly as Chris reviewed it sharp in the middle but soft on the edges which doesn't bother me. I used it a couple off weeks ago to take a quick portrait of my wife and it came out perfectly usable/printable. As far as bokeh goes I've never been a fan of heavy bokeh I want to be able to provide visual context to where the photo is taken and this lens does just that.
Hi Mr Frost. Have watched many of your reviews and very thankful for those! :) Regarding 15-45mm, is it safe to assume 20-40mm @ F5.6 to F8 is distortion free zone?
when compared to the kit lenses from the competitors (the sony 15-50mm) that locking mechanism is so annoying. honestly that is the dealbreaker for me. It is so unnecessary especially when similar lenses from other brands electronically extend
I’ve got an M50, with an 11-22, 22mm, 15-45, and 55-200. I was thinking about selling my 15-45 to get an 18-55 to cover all the lengths. Is this a good idea? Or does it not really matter to be able to cover the 45-55mm range?
I just bought M50 it is really good. It’s so small and light. The image quality is very good. But there aren’t so many small lightweight native EF-M lenses. I stuck using dslr lenses with an adapter, dslr lenses are very heavy so what’s the point of mirrorless camera?
if you havent already, and if you dont need IS in the lens, get the 22mm f2, its small bright and very sharp, sharper than most L lenses once theyve been adapted to our cropped sensors! The M50 looks really good! I have the original eos m, the 22mm makes up for all the terrible that my camera is :D im sure Christopher has a review of the 22mm check it out!! (edit) th-cam.com/video/tecYw3qC1Io/w-d-xo.html Christophers review ;)
I recently bought a Canon M6 with the kit 15-45mm lens and found myself very disappointed. In terms of cosmetics and physical build quality, the M6 is fairly well-built. The menu system is simple and straightforward and the camera is fairly easy to operate. However, I found the M6 kit lens to be not nearly as sharp or bright as the kit 16-50mm lens on my Sony a6000. I'd say that even at maximum aperture, the lens underexposes by at least 1 to 1.5 stops. I also found the 15-45mm lens to have significant and noticeable smearing and distortion at all focal lengths in the corners and off-centre areas. I also noticed that the camera itself offers somewhat less dynamic range than my Sony a6000 does. In addition, the sensor seemed to produce limp, almost washed-out colours, not like the warm, rich colours I knew when I owned a Canon T2i in 2015. Perhaps the colour change has something to do with the fact that a newer sensor and processing engine are being used. Or something else is going on. In any case, I promptly returned the M6 to the store where I bought it. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to like the M6. I bought the camera as a means to access a wider range of much more affordable lenses. Most of Sony's few e-mount offerings for the alpha-series cameras are overpriced, with the exception of the kit lens and the 55-210mm zoom. The few e-mount lenses offered by third-party manufacturers like Sigma aren't substantially better. Maybe if Canon brings out a M6 Mark II and improves the EF-M range of lenses and their latest crop of sensors, I might revisit the prospect of buying a mirrorless Canon camera.
Steve Struthers ; if you want sharp corners then you are Describing a point and Shoot like the sony mirror less cameras are famous for : then sony line is for you , the canon m6 is a Real Mirror less Camera , I personally like the soft corners they are meant to be that way in real photography , then you must hate a Prime Lens where basically the whole pic outside the target zone is blurred, sony has probably the most AF Points in the market , and it shows in there "Point and Shoot Type " looking Pictures ,that's why people who appreciate photography usually go with Canon or Nikon ,to leave the Point and Shoot Syndrome beginner mentality behind them and grow in photography , my friend I am not to put you down but help you to see how beautiful photography can be with a good camera , please do not be brain washed by other Canon , Nikon Haters out there , and go backwards to the Point and Shoot photograph mentality and call it great Pictures...when in reality are just Static Pictures..good Luck Steve in your Hunt for a Good Camera.

It's an okay camera. To be honest I'm not so much of an expert on the cameras - I just test the lenses hehe!

It will be slightly sharper. Personally if I could only have one lens for travelling I'd go for the 15-45 as I like wide angle photography

Sounds like you need a wide angle lens with a fast aperture. So, the Samyang 16mm f/2 or Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 might be good for you
Disappointing, my Olympus has this same kind of locking kit lens and it frustrated me to no end.
Karel Mačalík does the tokina 11-16 f2.8 suits in the body of M6?
Karel Mačalík and can you give a good wide angle adapter for canon 22mm f/2.
Never had it in my hands, but with 550 grams (plus adapter) I would think it's too heavy for M6.
Karel Mačalík I'm thinking it also it'll be heavy but I really like the tokina for ultra wide angle shots and for travel photography and the M6 body. So it's just me who have to adjust with its weight
I have this and I personally love it
Excellent video. Appreciated.
I see everything is beautiful with the sample photo/Video taken.. Lol..
Thank you for reviewing this lens, Mr. Frost.
But is there any other lens as wide, sharper with lower aperture out there that can win this lens? I am using an eos m3 body and i own m-mount adaptor.
There are loads of ultra-wide angle lenses out there which would work with your adaptor. Have a look at my ultra wide angle lens comparison video :-)
Lower F-number.
That means a larger aperture. You will want a lens with big aperture most of the time, not a small one :))
Yes.

No idea. The camera isn't even out yet! I GUESS they will - although the 18-55's IS does seem better.
Hmm. No idea, I'm afraid, but, I presume that's the case, if Canon are saying it themselves. It does surprise me, though.
Christopher Frost Photography I already own the 18-55 and the 22mm so I was planning on buying just the body and not buying the 15-45, but I guess I will have to just because of that. Really frustrating Canon!
Anyway, thank you for immediately responding and I really like you videos, congrats!
That's okay. If the M5 shot video in 4K I would have pre-ordered one already by now (I seriously need 4K video). It's sure to be an amazing camera!
Awesome Review. I love this lens. Thanks.
one of the most important part u miss for a review is to take a selfie to see how wide it is
Haha, that's the first time anyone's asked me to do selfie tests!
Yes selfie test is important nowadays. Maybe you can consider it for the next test Chris. Haha
Yup . please do Selfie test
I imagine this will work very well with the new M5
Should be pretty good :-)
Could you recommend a lens filter? I'm struggling to find one online for this lens
Depends what filter you're talking about. If it's an ND filter then watch my comparison review of them
49mm
What is the best lense adapter for this 15-45 mm lens.... i got this lense for M50 but it does sharp enough
Regarding 15-45mm, is it safe to assume 20-40mm @ F5.6 to F8 is distortion free zone?
Not distortion free, but much lower distortion
@@christopherfrost thank you!
when compared to the kit lenses from the competitors (the sony 15-50mm) that locking mechanism is so annoying. honestly that is the dealbreaker for me. It is so unnecessary especially when similar lenses from other brands electronically extend
it sucks that the aperture can't go wider than 3.5
Thank you for not showing at f8 in the middle
is this lens good for shooting potraits (EF-M 15-45mm
Not really. You'll want a lens with a much brighter aperture, say f/1.8 or f/1.4
@@christopherfrost what about the mm
@@africanaltered8951 50mm or 85mm, thereabouts
Which is better: ef-m 18-55 or this lens?
Why don't you watch the video, and find out :-)
hi what is the lens cap of the 15-45 mm?
49mm
Is an upgrade to 15 85 with 3rd party adapter good idea?
It's not a bad idea at all, but it wouldn't exactly be a compact solution what with the adaptor
Would i get the worth upgrade sharpness? Or maybe you can recommend me about another wide sharper cheap zoom lens
It'd be a little bit sharper, but not that much. Personally I'd stick with the 15-45mm lens
What if sigma 17 50 upgrade?
I’ve got an M50, with an 11-22, 22mm, 15-45, and 55-200. I was thinking about selling my 15-45 to get an 18-55 to cover all the lengths. Is this a good idea? Or does it not really matter to be able to cover the 45-55mm range?
It's a sharper lens - yes, I think that's a good idea
did u process the pictures ?
The sample images? Yes, I normally adjust the colours a little and normally add a little contrast to taste
In general, what do you think is the best lens combo for the Canon M camera? I have an m50 and looking to do all kinds of photography?
I don't know - maybe 11-22, 18-55, 55-200
haha, good review. seems the "lens"(head) behind the camera are more important than a lens. lol
I wish canon will release more ef lens. I just recently bought an m3 but still using my dslr lens
Chin Mizushima
I bought it withe 15-45mm for 430 euro.
Canon iant gonna release shit for EFM. It has been out for 7 years and we have shit 0
Thanks man!!
Can i use for cooking video?
Yes, sure
The unique botton on the 15-45mm m is for what?
It's for extending the lens
Extending the lens? What extending the lens is the zoom ring, right?
Watch the video.
Whats the difference between international and USA in terms of M50 camera - also is the Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens (Graphite)
Any good ?
The love it or hate it kit lens
Спасибо за отличное видео! Привет из Германии 😉
ill be getting this camera for a short film project, i was wondering what lens would be best for a mostly 1st pov film
The 18-55mm lens has the best image stabilization for hand held video work. The 15-45 has the widest possible angle of view.
Deym I want to upgrade my camera but seems like every camera I look has huge flaws, those which has is minimal flaws is too expensive ,so...🙄
Like M50 has a feature - viewfinder in wi-fi video-mode, but m100 and m6 doesn't
Price koto aitar
please review nikon 18 140mm lens
I don't review Nikon gear, sorry
This or the 11-22mm?
Depends what kind of lens you want, really
Thank you.
Seen any interesting news from Photokina?
interesting video!
The interesting news is that I can't wait to get an EOS M5 (even if it doesn't have 4K video)
They're not for everyone
Sir, canon 22mm 2.8 lens sharper than this kit lens? Plz reply sir
I don't get why canon just use metal mounts on all their lenses?
Keeping costs and weight down (I wish they were all metal too, though)
Yep! they probably cost $1 to make. Plastic mounts just don't last. It a pity as the 18-55 is such a solid build
While making a video..can we set it at f/ 3.5.?
Hi Chris. Just a heads-up, your Patreon link in the description leads to a 404 page.
How do you turn off the image stabilization?
In the camera menu
I bought the M3 with the 15-45mm for 430 euro.
That's a good deal!
odd looking rear element..
