There's something about Celia's voice that I almost invariably love, especially her upper range. I'm glad someone posted this -- the quartet is beautiful here. As a side note, Judge Turpin has never been creepier than in this production....his "Johanna" is just disturbing.
I so enjoy Celia in this role. Her voice is beautiful, she understands the role, and she's still got this innocent aura that she brings to the role that not many Joannas can capture. Very impressive! and why is it that Hugh Panaro looks like Hugh Jackman in this movie?
Thanks for uploading- this is my favorite song and I'm very bitter about it being cut from the film!! But it would be hard to equal the likes of Hugh and Celia anyway. I particularly love that this really shows off the comedy in Celia's portrayal of Johanna
This is one of my favorite incarnations of Beatle Bamford. Whoever the actor is did a really good job. I love the emphasis he put on "Bowed." Different from the other versions.
Anthony is so besotted that he can’t stop singing “Joanna.” Sondheim sneaks at least a line or a phrase in every time he’s onstage. And you know that rhyming dictionary got a serious workout for “Ladies…” Magnificent!
Ray Friedeck (Beadle) has appeared on Broadway as JP Morgan in Ragtime, in A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden with Tony Randall and in the world premiere of King David at Disney's New Amsterdam Theater.
The Kennedy Center is in Washington DC, and it starred Brian Stokes Mitchell, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Hugh Panaro. The most recent Broadway revival production starred Michael Cerveris, Lauren Molina and Patti LuPone, and was directed by John Doyle. The original BWay production starred Len Cariou & Angela Lansbury and was directed by Harold Prince. The first BWay revival starred Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler.
Joslyn plays the role best. Her voice is awesome for it, but the main reason people don't like her is that she goes FULL BLAST the WHOLE TIME. But the reason I like her is that she adds a tinge of insanity that I believe Johanna needs. Celia, however, seems to play the role more innocently, and her singing is perfect for the role in other ways.
I prefer Celia’s performance. She hints at the insanity but still makes it realistic that Antony could have fallen in love with her without noticing her insanity. That’s my main complaint about Joslyn. I don’t buy the fact that Antony doesn’t notice she’s insane.
I think I heard a noise, I mean another noise Oh nevermind Just a noise, Just another noise Something in the street I'm a silly little nillynoddle, KISS ME! :) I love them both, especially Hugh.
Absolutely, the Antony could never sing this way (unfair to compare him to Hugh Panaro as he is brilliant, but still, that's how it should be sung!), and the Johanna's voice wasn't developed enough to sing this song, and she certainly wasn't a good enough actress. Plus, Celia rocks the house in whatever she sings, she has so much range! She's brilliant.
At least she didn't run out of breath like Lisa Vroman. Although I guess a mistake is a mistake... lol Good recovery. Celia is one of those actresses that's just good in everything she's cast in. Her understanding of the characters she plays is amazing, which is how she's able to play such a unique (and highly acclaimed among Les Mis diehards) Eponine and earn a Tony nom for Spelling Bee
This is good-but Celia makes a mistake in coming in late midway through this phrase "...fool, but my reticule never leaves my side!" Otherwise, it's perfect.
I don't think their Antony and Johanna were good enough actors for this song and probably struggled with it vocally, and tho I love Timothy Spall (the Beadle in the film) there's absolutely no way he could sing Ladies in Their Sensitivities. Also, this song is way too funny for the directing style Tim Burton chose for the movie, it just would not fit.
It's a little ridiculous, hence the laughter. Besides, this is far less suspenseful than many of the situations the characters are getting into in this play. Allow them a little comic relief.
this audience is awesome. xD Most audiences don't catch the "you don't have a gate" line. Or even the "even not knowing who you were" line.
The gate line is one of my favorites, but it'd be so easy to miss, and it sucks!
I'm seriously bummed that this song isn't in the movie. Celia is not only vocally amazing, she's absolutely hysterical.
Celia's head voice is as amazing as her chest voice, gosh!
I love it when the actors performing give the song a humorous twist, it makes it so much more entertaining XD
y'all, everyone is super talented in this rendition... but that beadle is SLAPPING them high notes!
There's something about Celia's voice that I almost invariably love, especially her upper range. I'm glad someone posted this -- the quartet is beautiful here. As a side note, Judge Turpin has never been creepier than in this production....his "Johanna" is just disturbing.
celia's range is absolutely incredible! It stuns me how she can master such a demanding sop role like this as well as she can belt.
This is the best Johanna/Anthony pairing I have ever heard!!! They should have recorded this cast! GREAT.
I so enjoy Celia in this role. Her voice is beautiful, she understands the role, and she's still got this innocent aura that she brings to the role that not many Joannas can capture. Very impressive!

HAHHA, Hugh's sideburns. This is beautiful. I love this cast.
WOW! the Beadle kicks some major ass on those high notes
I love how Anthony cradles Johanna in his arms. Very sweet. :)
Thanks for uploading- this is my favorite song and I'm very bitter about it being cut from the film!! But it would be hard to equal the likes of Hugh and Celia anyway. I particularly love that this really shows off the comedy in Celia's portrayal of Johanna
Thanks for posting Celia Keenan Bolger is fabulous
am i about to start sobbing

MDStallings7 Its bows, honey, not bowed.
Hugh + Celia = Love
This is my favorite song in the show, and this has made me extremely happy, lol.
she's fabulous!

I feel like I come across this video every few years and each time it’s amazing! thanks for sharing! Love hugh and celia
wow, this was so good, I didn't know she was a soprano either!
the woman is excellent...beautiful, haunting voice...I can't believe they cut this from the movie! it's my absolute favorite song!
Why wasn't this song in the movie?? This song is so great, and these people are so talented! I loved it!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! When was THIS performance. Celia's awesome and so is Hugh. Both reign over awesomeness.
I never knew this production took place! It's really great. I love Celia Keenan-Bolger.
Oh Wow! I was blessed to see this 🤗💙💚💜
i cant stop watching this!!!
this is my favorite song from the show!
this is absolutely amazing... love celia!

Dat sailor and his manly sideburns LOL That is amazing. I love this song.
Around 4:50 GOOD GOD that high B! This Beadle is amazing on so many levels.
Celia is incredible.

Casey M in the newest off
Broadway production currently HUGH is playing Sweeney it was amazing!
The Beadle saw how awesome of a barber Sweeney was at the competition between him and Pirelli. So of course he'd send the judge to only the best.
Let's hear it for the Beadle here. He's one of the best I've ever heard
Thanks for uploading this! I love celia and hugh!
thank you soo much! i love her voice
my fav. song
Holy shit, that woman is insanely talented
Omg! Thank you so much for this! Is there anyway you could post some more of this? ^_^
THANKS FOR THIS!

Yes! Post Johanna!
TH-cam had it before.
4:20 I just love his hand gestures xD
Really! I look up this song at least once a week on Limewire, but to no prevail.
But yes, goregous. I
Wow I didn't know she sang legit soprano! I love her Johanna
He actually discusses those in a recent podcast interview for Les Miz. The link to it is somewhere over at his site.
Dang, I ought to get the sheet music for this song. To me it sounds like every Johanna sings flat, but I just memorized it sharp in my head, lol.
AHH. AHH. Hugh Panaro!!!
AMAZING. :D

2002 - part of a Sondheim summer celebration at The Kennedy Center that year.
Celia is pure genius.
Hugh Panaro
well said!
I think Celia is my favorite Johanna!
Yup, I do! I can upload it within a day or two.
its SOOO true
"we don't have a gate"
lawl.
I think I heard a noise, I mean another noise
Oh nevermind
Just a noise, Just another noise
Something in the street
I'm a silly little nillynoddle, KISS ME! :)
I love them both, especially Hugh.
Okay, but give me a while. I still owe someone "The Worst Pies in London" :D
I know this song is supposed to lighten up the mood of Sweeney Todd and the movie made it too dark. Hugh P. did such a great job, love him.
They're pretty big names in the musical theatre community.
I
We don't have a gate! ^^
it's so funny!

Wow...this is great!
One billion times better than Betsy Joslyn...
Wait, they don't even compare...these two are amazing....
I was JUST thinking that :D
can you please post the ballad of sweeney todd if you have it?
Kennedy Center, 2002
I had no idea Celia Keenan Bolger has such range.
I think they meant who was the actor playing the Beadle.
She's too smart for the role (and it shows) but vocally is by far my favorite Johanna!!! (well...other than Audra)
wats the difference between the broadway production and the kennedy center production of sweeney todd?
What is the name of this Beadle?
At least she didn't run out of breath like Lisa Vroman. Although I guess a mistake is a mistake... lol

why sideburns hugh, why?!
keenan-bolger like andrew keenan-bolger?
They're siblings
hey Paula :) I know you ;-)

Audra played Johanna?? When??
Lisa Vroman
Lisa ran out of breath? Doesn't sound like it...
It's a little ridiculous, hence the laughter. Besides, this is far less suspenseful than many of the situations the characters are getting into in this play. Allow them a little comic relief.
It's supposed to be really fast!!! The one with that screeching chick was supposed to be fast but she sucked!!!
