Nice song. However, there is nothing glorious about British colonialism in India. And the storyline of the opera makes me cringe: A girl dying out of love for her oppressor who moves on to marry some chick from his own country. A white man's wet dream. Anyways, good performance.

I'm glad you and I can appreciate the performance. Besides, I can't understand the language, so I have no idea what it's about. An odd advantage, but There It Is. ;-) I'm not an opera buff, so maybe there are others. "Dialogues of the Carmelites" comes to mind, though of course some would find the religious and martyrdom aspects objectionable.
@@drcomma2001 It is quite normal not to be able to follow the dialogs in operas. Even if they are in your native language. Therefore you should always get familiar with the storyline before you go to an opera performance. Nowadays you find the stories online. I love opera music and it truly touches my heart. But as you said the depictions of women and non-white people is often very disturbing.

what makes this interpretation so special is the vibrato of the two singers: the oscillations overlap almost perfectly and the harmonics are going hand in hand. Nothing dissonant, nothing left to chance. pure music
이번꺼는 진짜 레전드인듯. 조수미씨가 비브라토도좀 쎈편이고 파워도 좀있는편이라서 그냥봐봤는데 최고맞는듯. 메조가 소리를 좀 가두는느낌이 아쉬움. 메조는 받쳐주는걸로 하려고 입오무리면서 갈려고했던거같은데 조금 답답한느낌이 있음. 근데 그래도 둘이 듀엣할때는 레전드인듯. 비브라토도 둘이 잘맞는거같은데

I love Sumi Jo. I hadn't heard Ah-Kyung Lee before and I love her timbre. They blend beautifully. I think Joan and Marilyn or Jane are my favourite two, but the balance of these two voices is just beautiful. Too often the mezzo is overshadowed - its so delightful to hear Ah-Kyung Lee. Love it.

Honestly I know everyone loves Sumi-Jo, but I come back here time after time for Ah-Kyung Lee. Something about her voice and expression just makes this for me.
I watched Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca perform this and described them as liquid silver and mercury. Sumi and Ah-Kyung are liquid gold and liquid platinum, melding, mixing, melting my heart. Bringing tears to my eyes for the first time. Just pure perfection.

Oh WOW ! Perfection! And it's the first time, after seeing 3 other duets with this song, that I see these two lovely ladies singing BEHIND (or next to) the stage!! And STILL you can hear how strong & beautiful their voices are. Simply AMAZING! I adore Dame Joan Sutherland's beautiful & experienced voice, and she did a wonderful duet with Marilyn Horne... but my fave duet so far with this song are these two fantastic ladies here on this video. It's like their voices are melting together...absolutely high class! BRAVO !
I've always appreciated this piece but this duo made me tear up like a baby. The first few lines gave me chills and by the end of the performance, I was bawling. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. MAGNIFICENT. BRAVO. BRAVO!!!!!
