I think the choice should be up to the rider. Just as you, I believe a helmet saved my life. During the fall of 2013, I was on my way to work at 5:30 am, on board my 2008 Harley Ultra Glide. I t-boned a huge buck at around 65 mph. He jumped out of some high bushes near the shoulder, almost on top of me. I had not one bit of reaction time afforded to me. I ended up with 5 broken ribs, concussion, and severe trauma to the left side of my body. After I blacked out, woke up face down in the road. My bike was about 50 yards ahead of me, fallen over on the road shoulder. Luckily, upon waking up, someone had stopped in the opposite direction and called 911 and stayed until help arrived. Although just wearing a half helmet, I believe it probably saved my life, as I was probably bouncing around like a ball after being ejected from the bike.
Yes I wear a helmet but thats by choice where I live. No way do I think it should be a law. like you said it effects you and your family. I don't like government imposing their will me.

I always wear my helmet. I think helmet laws should be put in place but not enforced.
