OneMic Series - The David Grisman Quintet - Bells Of Camoglia

- OneMic - the minimalist recording series by John Cuniberti demonstrates that an entire band can be recorded with only one stereo microphone in one take. Each recording session is shot in HD video on a Sony a7RII by filmmaker Nathaniel Kohfield. What makes this series so different from other live performance videos is that the artist is in complete control of his/her presentation. This means that the sound, balance, dynamics and stereo image is decided upon at the moment of creation, not in post-production. The artist (band) is responsible for the final product. There is no editing of the audio or video. It’s as honest as it can be including imperfections. This organic presentation isn’t limited to “acoustic” music as seen with live classical and folk music. In this series veteran recording engineer John Cuniberti records bands with electric guitars and drums that would normally require a multi-mic, multi-track approach. This is not the first time this has been done but this technique was quickly forsaken soon after the multi-track tape recorder was invented and with it a loss of a level of musical intimacy. The OneMic series demonstrates the positive aspects of the minimalistic recording process of the 1930s but will be captured on modern stereo recording equipment.

That's my awesome cousin Matt on flute!
It's a real shame that so few artists and producers today understand, much less, appreciate your recording philosophy. It's brilliant. As is the David Grisman Quintet! Marvelous!
Thanks for listening
I mean, probably the greatest audio-themed series on TH-cam.
wow, thank you
I never knew that I needed to hear this, until now
That's spectacular
Thank you!
You should check out the James Bond theme song
Outstanding Music
Outstanding lighting Outstanding concept Outstanding Sound
Virtuoso David Grisman quintet play an awesome composition, love this performance ❤️👍
EXCELLENT ❤!!!!!!!!!
Thank You!
I grew up listening to Grisman. It was my inspiration to get into the recording and filming industry. When I was 26, I had the amazing opportunity to film his grandson (Sam Grisman), and to know now that this incredible sound that resonates with my entire musical appreciative life could be established through one microphone brings tears to my eyes. At this moment I will now be selling gear to acquire an R88. This is absolutely shattering to me. What a beautiful sound.
Thank you Joe for your kind words of support for my OneMic Series.
Einstien on the Mandolin? Awsome!
The balance is spot on with these great players. Perfect for the mic. Thank You
Our pleasure!
Bravo to all...
Sounds amazing! The sound stage just beautiful!! Just wow!

Brilliant as usual, John.
Thanks for listening Todd
As always, fantastic experience!
Thanks again!
Yes, I asked them to step into the center of the mic for his solos.
fabuloso!!
thank you
Wonderful and I'm boggled at how I hear stereo in my cans! Thanks you for sharing OneMic.
Glad you like it Dan.
WOW!
Really is interesting. I'm not knowledgable about sound engineering but appreciate the approach to this video, combined with the visual part of it. The song and the playing of it are beautiful. On the whole a lovely recording. Thank you for sharing.
Cool, thanks!
Awesome live sound like it should be!
Thank you Joe for your positive comments.
true masters
Thanks for listening
BRILLIANT GUYS!
Thank you!
SO WELL COMPOSED and PLAYED. I soak this up like a sponge for my own creations lol @@onemic-theminimalist
So awesome. Not to mention the obviously great camera work
Thank you Will.
Hats off to you John! @onemic-theminimalist All of the OneMic recordings you've done are spectacular. This one may take the cake though as DGQ are all such great players. I checked your site and didn't see any way to purchase any of this material. Would love to get a 48/24 flac download of some of your OneMic recordings.
There isn’t any audio only OneMic recording currently available. Maybe someday.
Excellent.
One thing. Actually two: Is it possible to add 1440p or 2160p? And if you can pan a little slower, from side to side. Thanks!
Many are in 4K. You need to watch with the Crome browser. All the rest are 1080p.
wow
Yes, outstanding musicians.
I've used the R88 and N8s (in blumlein) many many times. R88 is a fantastic mic, MAYBE the finest modern microphone one can buy for the money. I'm angry that I'm not the one that thought of this channel. Bravo.
Thanks Dude
Fantastic. Hoping someday these sessions will be available for purchase in hirez.
I hope so too!
absolutely great recording of a wonderful performance. though your video description gives us the name of the camera used, but not the mic itself.
not shadowbanned yet AEA R88
No it's not Bond, it's Grisman, and... good morning y'all!

First rate playing as always, however some mention of the other
musician's names would be nice. This is absolutely how the sound
of music should be, without the over- engineering. Thanks so much!
Thank you for your suggestion. Their names are at the end of the video.
@@onemic-theminimalist Oops, my apologies.
This is a fantastic track! Thumbs up!
I was checking out your channel and all the videos of different bands and started thinking about how this OneMic technique would suit classical music. This recording was a great teaser about what you could do with small ensembles in a more classical music context. Would be really interesting hearing your thoughts about recoding a large choir, since that's my own passion. Is the R88 a good companion in a church and with choirs of 40-50 singers? Your would't really have the benefit of the blumlein double 8 charateristiscs, I guess?
Indeed - one stereo mic recordings have been used for classical music since the invention of stereo recording. I suppose with a large choir one could split it into two groups and use both sides of the Blumlein double 8. Not sure what the advantage would be over a conventional stereo X/Y
I wish more recordings of music were as this. Post production is very poor in many recordings....one might say, well, go to a live venue and enjoy the experience. I say, I would but the extreme rudeness of the crowds is intolerable. Oh well.
Anyone else hear the music to a new James Bond movie?
On His Majesty’s Mandolin
Action takes place up in the Carpathians.
Were these the only two Grossman recordings? They are just perfect, what a great recording!
We recorded four songs that day and these are the best two.
@@onemic-theminimalist thanks for that.. I'd still love to hear them... More to the point is love to try something similar one day.
the center front-facing side is on violinist is that correct ? the sound is so balance.
Yes
whats going on as far as EQ and compression? this sounds absolutely fantastic btw!!
Just what would normally be use in mastering, not much.
@@onemic-theminimalist I kind of expected to hear Dave’s sound change while he moved his mandolin around in playing, but the sound is picked up pretty consistent by mic. Is that the Stereo mic at work (and his motion would be more evident to my ears on a mic in mono?)
@@gabrielcaplan6887 The further away the instrument is from a stereo mic the more forgiving the left and right movement will be.
@@onemic-theminimalist 🙏✊thanks for info.
Wow!!! John this is an amazing recording with perfect balance and imaging! Is this with the AEA TRP?
No, I used my Millennia HV-3C.
Thank you John! How much difference is there in the sound of that pre compared to the TRP2? I have the TRP2 is it worth it to also have the HV-3C?@@onemic-theminimalist
@@stevenrayphoto1280 I prefer the HV3C because it has stepped gain that ensures the L&R channels are perfectly balanced. If you already own the AEA, I don't suggest replacing it with the HV3C because of the "sound." All the recordings I did in my Portland sessions used the TRP.
Thanks John. I also own some tube mic pre's, V72, Langevin 116, Ampex MX10, and UA 610. Have you ever tried the AEA ribbon mics with any tube mic pre's? I'm going to be recording a singer songwriter project with mainly nylon and steel string acoustic guitars and wonder if the tube pre's will work well with those mics in your opinion?@@onemic-theminimalist
Tube gear can provide a sound, mostly harmonic distortion and I have used plenty of it over the years. The price you pay is in noise, especially when using low output ribbons. Ribbon recordings often need a bit of high end boost during mixing and thats too late to discover you picked the wrong preamp. You need to decide if the sound of a tube justifies a higher noise floor.
So great! Was this setup Blumlein?
Yes
Is there any place where we could purchase an uncompressed version of this?
Not at this time
MORE DGQ . . . MORE DGQ
Thanks for listening
Bond. James Bond.
