This is pure art! By far, my favourite recording of this series. Fully deserves an Apple Music or Tidal upload in the highest quality possible. Too good, for real. My mind is always blown when I hear this
Hi John, You have been so gracious to answer all of my questions. I feel like in years to come your recordings will be iconic and game changing in our industry. I have been listening and watching this work for the past month and it is beyond words as to the quality and vision. Musicians, songwriting, venues, production, and video all as good as it gets! Many thanks!
I've watched almost all of your videos. I think this is my favorite. Maybe it'll change next week. Excellent work, John. Hope to see more of these videos in the future at some point, you're certainly onto something here with the R88. Cheers.
I thought I'd heard every tune on this channel, but somehow I missed this one and I'm glad to have something new to listen to. Man, everyone involved in this did such an excellent job.....the musicians delivered, the audio is spot on and the lighting and video looks excellent. Great song choice too. Kudos everyone.
Yes, it's because by using only one stereo ribbon mic, the recording maintains an authentic listening perspective... instead of trying to fabricate that perspective through a mixing board. In short, it's 'real', whereas most other styles of recording are fake.
Wow, the whole series already is amazing, but this one really is a masterpiece recording wise. I don't know if it's the new version of the mike, but even the mono-compatibility seems improved... Just can't help listening and listening again. Bravo and thanks a million for this work !
John, I’m loving all of these tracks! I was hoping you could possibly say a few words about how the r88 and r88a differ from one another in your experience.
The R88A has a bit more upper-mid and isn't quite as flat as the R88 in the bottom end. All that means is a different approach to mastering. Both are beautiful mics. If you are recording a low level soloist the R88A may be a better choice. Because I record bands the R88 works for me. However, watch the Cedric Burnside video of just him and his guitar at Sun Studio. Noise isn't an issue.
is it possible to buy/download this track in hi-res ? it's so well executed (both artistically and technically) that is a shame to listen "lossy" here on YT... BTW, congrats for such great show !
Powerful song, great interpretation, and wonderful sound engineering. Why anyone uses multi-mics and a 48 channel mixing board is beyond me ;-) If I could ask one question though, it would be "blumlein or M/S? and how do you chose between the two?" Thanks for the inspiring video!!!
the engineer has admited to the use of mary jane in 68 so as it was illegal back then I need to confiscate all the recording gear. sorry John. my fav in this is the Tele slide work. tasty! This is pretty dang far from Satch! I remembered the Cuniberti name from Satrianis first albums. I use the same guitar pedal, a Real Tube that Satch used. His student George Cole turned me onto it Great recording!! San Geronimo plays in Santa Rosa in the KRUSH FM BACKYARD FRIDAY AUGUST 25 2023 FREE CONCERT
What is the rule of thumb for recording a band like this? Do you give the artist guidelines on when to shy away and when to be present on the mic? Thanks for the content! Really shows the versatility of the R88!
@@miguelbarrio The artists retain the rights to the audio. It's up to them. I never intended to separate the audio from the video. That's something the audiophile community wants me to do and I'm flattered by that. If a record label wanted to get involved I would support the effort.
Joe - what did you use for mastering this track? Sounds like a bit of reverb and some amazing eq/compression to finish it off. Analog mastering chain? Very curious, I own this mic and love it.
whoa, i looked up the microphone and it’s $2500! i wonder what kind of results you’d get with, say, a much cheaper one? i really like the idea of recording with one/two microphones. this rocks!
Professional recordings are often done with microphones costing $2500, or $5000, even $10,000....or higher! Also -- make no mistake, the beautiful sound here is not just the microphone -- it's the engineer that knows how to use it, and the great players.
I've had a personal obsession with the 'one mic' concept (specifically one stereo ribbon mic) since around 2007. This video is the sound. I can't believe I've finally found it. I would have done it myself, but sometimes life gets in the way, and I don't record anymore. For now. But I never stop plotting.
Thanks to Steve Guttenberg the Audiophiliac for suggesting this channel.
Welcome!
#FreePress #FreeJulianAssange Jail the war-mongers. A fantastic performance of a song we should think deeply about right now.

This might be the best video on the internet right now... I’m just waiting for my R88 to get here.

Absolutely fabulous. Congrats for showing what can be achieved with one mic. Inspiring.
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much!
I'll take this as proof that more mics make things sound worse (especially close-mic'ing every damn thing in the room).
That sound is just stunning!

I love the Appalachian twang!
Amazing stereo image! Must have been lots of trial and error before getting there... Great stuff! Oh, and the performance is rock solid...
Another gem from this series, glad it is growing one video at a time. Great balance. Great start to the day.

Reverb, EQ, compression and some limiting. My basic mastering chain sans the reverb.

So this is the Active version of the R88. How do you like it compared to the Mk2 version?
I couldn't tell any difference.
This track is so good, an R88 is instantly on my list.
When will this be available to download on Apple Music or Spotify ?
Never, sorry.
Can we get these available on AppleMusic please…?

Experienced singers will "work" the mic. I do choreograph their moves for balance and for the video.
Where to purchase this???
Not for sale
