Love these big older homes. Each one is so unique and I can only imagine how amazing the woodwork is inside these gems.
Agreed.
I lived on Crescent Rd in the 70's, and many of the mansions were transient rooming houses and were very tired being 70 years old and in need of extensive work, however the oak woodworking was stunning and was everywhere throughout this old houses.
I was born and lived most of my life in Toronto, working downtown as a Paralegal in many of the original office buildings including the "Thompson" Building at 390 Bay St. across from the Old City Hall. Memories of my life came flooding back as these back streets were the streets of my childhood and until I left the legal profession to pursue my art career and moved to Muskoka. There is so much I could say, but I also lived nearby at 49 Glen Elm Ave. which backed onto the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I had a friend that lived in the house next to Gordon's, and so it was that I got to meet him many times in the 90's, not really knowing who he was. He was keen to sit on his front porch in an aluminum lawn chair from the 1960's, and there was no wall or gate at the time, and so we would strike up conversations about my favorite topics of all things botanical, fishing, camping and the great North. I was raised with classical and war-time music although I was a child of the late 60's and so I didn't connect the songs I had heard on my red radio to Gordon as a child at the time. Some years later after work downtown one evening, I happened to walk by the old Massey Hall, and someone was selling tickets to a Gordon Lightfoot concert for $20. I immediately snapped one up and went inside. He had just recovered from a massive stroke and it was his first concert. I was one of only about 7 or 8 people there and so I sat right up close and got to hear him and his faithful bandmates do a full concert, as if it were just for me. I shyly made my way up to him and although it had been a few years since we had spoken, he remembered me, and I was amazed. Just such a humble, all around GREAT Canadian. I remember when they did a bronze sculpture in Orillia to honour him, and I attended, and I remember him wondering what all the fuss was about. To me, he is the pre-eminent poet laureate, story-telling Canadian musician, along with Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. Thank you for all of the good memories. It looks like the Thompson home was cut in half, modernized and it's not appealing to me. The original homes there are stunningly beautiful, if well kept and properly restored.
Wow, thanks so much for sharing!
All the good people live near the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Some even moved inside to dwell, eventually. Camping and the Great North, yes. Outside of jazz, there are a few others in my music library. Mr. Lightfoot has a big seat ther. Most of his songs. Cheers.
Thanks for the tour Ken, it brought back many memories of living on Crescent Rd. in the 70's. I believe Lightfoot moved to Beaumont Rd. in 1975 the same year as that infamous party of musical celebrities. I was only 15 at the time and lived a 10 minute walk from Gord's old house but never knew it, even though I owned some of his records at the time.
You're welcome, and thanks for sharing!
I grew up in Rosedale as did my parents. It's just another neighborhood in the city....the Bridlepath is where the real wealth is
Agreed but Rosedale is indeed old money and actually better looking homes in my opinion. Bridle Path yep monstrosities LOL
Bridle Path is new money.
Ken, Great walk and commentary through the beautiful Rosedale district. The homes in this area are absolutely stunning. I also like how you used "bucolic" to describe the picturesque aspect of the neighborhood. You must be excellent at crossword puzzles...✏🎓🇨🇦
Thanks, Steve!
Stunning on the outside, skeletons on the inside.
Loved this walk! Great to see these awesome homes and hear your well paced interesting commentary. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thoroughly enjoyed this tour….thanks.
My pleasure!
My former friend, who passed away in 1985, lived in one of the white mansions. It belonged to the Eatons.
Nancy was a friend of mine too who lived in the white mansion on Sherbourne Street with her mother in the 70's around the corner from where I lived on Crescent Rd.. I remember the tragic story of what happened in 1985.
Thanks for sharing.
Nice family. Eatons owned a house in Dundas ontario where my former boss rented for a few years until he moved onto the otherside of the country.
I loved on crescent
Absolutely beautiful-thanks!
You bet!
Breathtaking video thank you Ken.
You bet, Pamela!
In 2011, my company supplied a special flexible roof coating for the roof which joins the two houses owned by David Thomson. The house was under complete renovation at the time, involving numerous trades. I was fortunate to have a tour of the two buildings. The main lobby entrance had a wall of working monitors which provided live views of the entire house. There was a full greenhouse in the rear.
Very cool, thanks for the info!
and his home is the mansion to the right of the white house, not the left, so it wasn't even really shown
@@TheKenContinuum The Loblaws guy lives on Admiral Road.
David Thompson has amassed a sum of 84 billion CDN as of January 2024. Wonder if he is able to shop at LOBLAWS? Nice stroll through the richly, rich area of Toronto Ken.
Thanks for the walk!
My pleasure!
Great walk Ken! Rosedale is so beautiful & thanks for the tour of homes!
My pleasure!
my husbands Grandparents lived on Whitney in the late 1900's onward. We have film footage of my husband's mother and her sister in their fur snowsuits playing in the snow. The street has not changed much at all based upon the film footage his Grandfather took in the late 1920s.
Very nice!
Thanks for the tour, I appreciate it! I've been meaning to ride out to the woodland trails and I go through there. Often after I cross Bloor I take a deep peaceful exhale and the grime and stress of the city leaves me. Rosedale reminds me of parts of Victoria, BC. Beautiful old architecture, lush landscaping and the people are nice too. The roads need some work though, potholes are brutal.
Sure thing, & thanks for watching!
Very nice walk Ken keep doing more of this kind of beautiful houses thanks take care.
Thanks, will do!
I see most drivers ignore stop signs.
Too true around there..!
Cool video!
I've worked in Rosedale in recent years.
The famous party hosted by Gordon Lightfoot at 5 Beaumont was in early December 1975 when the Rolling Thunder Revue was at Maple Leaf Gardens for 2 nights. Burton Cummings mocks the place and Gordon (lightheartedly) on one of his live albums, recorded in Toronto and Burton refers to Gordon's 'big pretentious Rosedale mansion' although I think it's attractive and I've seen tons of houses I'd sooner call pretentious.
Where are the dogs being walked? I'm surprised the streets are so empty. You picked a good time to visit. When I'm there, it's a cast of thousands, working endlessly on lawns, renovations, and we-come-to-you car repairs. And the swimming pool guys. And the tech/ IT/ HiFi/ WiFi guys. And the delivery guys. It's busy in there, for a neighbourhood that somehow has one of Toronto's highest rates of douchie drivers, yet zero traffic lights, and many intersections with no stop signs for anyone. By douchie drivers, I'm not even indulging in a hint of class warfare, the aggressive drivers include those driving to their job sites and those who use Rosedale as a short cut from Bayview to Yonge.
At least one retired hockey player lives nearby.
At least one of those low rises on Rosedale Road is a co-op, to the tenants' credit, pun intended(!).
You passed a Dragon's Den, as it were, early-ish in the video.
Bin-Scarth has some impressive houses, especially on the south side. There's one giant stone one in particular, that I find impressive.
For the more historic minded, I've wondered when certain Family Compact households of the Family Compact era had to divide their land and houses, because I don't think those Rosedale mansions would have been built as semi-detached houses, no matter big each half was. (I mean the old ones, not the 'newer' ones on Glen Rd) Also, while many houses are huge, they are on surprisingly small pieces of land.
Another prominent wealthy (roughly in that order) Canadian has a place near the start of your walk, and I think she bought her neighbour's place because I guess hers wasn't big enough.
I wouldn't have particularly noticed, but their rather prominent security presence attracted my attention, and inspired me to google the address.
There are a couple of houses that have been empty and boarded up for at least a couple of years, and I wonder what the deal is with each. One is quite spectacular, one is more ordinary, near the top of Glen when Summerhill road keeps changing names (to Glen, then Douglas).
Thanks for uploading..!
Thanks for watching & for sharing all the info!
@erict Why b so vague about the hockey player, n prominent Canadian? Why not just say their names was there something to b ashamed of? Lol!

Ahhh so that’s where Geddy Lee lives. I’ll be sure to pop by for an autograph at 3am
Say hi for me.
He won't hear you knock... tunes will be cranked too loud!
Just play Edmonton Fitzgerald n Ford will get u! Lol!After a full 10 minutes !@@troyvan6952
@troyvan6952 or he is deaf by now. Many older lose hearing after a few decades.
@@whathandleUtalkabt"Many older.....who, famous musicians, actors, billionaire business owners??" If you were referring to Gord Lightfoot, I'm afraid he's more than just deaf , as he's dead! Your reply was only a few days ago, and Gord passed about 6 months ago, I believe! Sorry to shock you ,but tryna keep stuff real! Lol!Correct me if I'm wrong you could a been referring to that Rush singer Geddy,I dunno! LOL!!!
Yes, that was Ged's house. He owns the one beside it too. He liked their garden.
You walked by Eugene Levy's house near the end.
North Bay, eh? I don't blame you for living in your 'hood.
Thanks for the many videos! Brings back memories. ❤
Sure thing! haha I didn't know about Eugene's house.
Do you know when he first moved there ?
Geddy Lee's is one of my favourite ones, and I know the neighbourhood rather well (as a worker not a resident!!).
Thank you indeed homes to be proud of.
I’m surprised they don’t have huge security walls and gates.
I was born and raised in North Bay also. Surprised at how close the home are and how close they are to the main roads. Thanks for sharing.
Ah, cool cool!
I wonder if Gordon Lightfoot and Cardinal Carter who lived at 8 Beaumont Road, got along well as neighbours. I've heard that someone was always calling the Toronto Parking Authority about on street car parking.
I rode my motorcycle through their last Sunday. I feel like the Summerville Market area needs a coffee house. That whole area is nestled in the action of the city.
People sip coffee outside the bakeries I think; I wouldn't be surprised if it's difficult or impossible to get zoning permission for a sit-dow joint in the area. Also, there's that sandwich place on Crescent near Yonge that people like, I can't do 16 bucks for a sandwich but I'm sure they taste great.
Always nice to see how the other half lives Ken. Thanks for the walk thru Rosedale. The difference in income between St Jamestown and Rosedale is staggering.Have a great weekend Ken😊😊😊
Sure thing, & yeah the difference is pretty stark.
Greetings from Westlake

Rush--1975--what a wild ride
Quiet and pensive, my thoughts apprehensive
Magnificent magazine homes--❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Saw the thumbnail and thought, "Now that's a house!". Beautiful.
haha I thought that was the most impressive looking one as seen from the street.
What other rock stars have an apartment building across the street from them?Geddy lee truely humble....
It's a nice building, and I bet most of the residents have been there as long as Geddy has.
Hey Ken, that was a very enjoyable walk and great to see these gorgeous homes. What’s next for the big mansion walks… Bridal Path? 😁
Thanks, & maybe -- I haven't walked through there yet! haha
I just googled Tom Brady's house. Take a look and compare it to these Rosedale houses. Brady's house is what I expect when millions are involved.
Hi Ken, awesome live video walk. I enjoyed it. How are you doing? I'm doing well, and so is my cat Benjamin. Have a great weekend and good night. See you next video ❤😊
Thanks, Michelle. I'm very well.
Gorgeous homes.all different not the new homes where each one is exactly like the neighbors
That's what I like about it!
Nice mix of architecture. Another delightful little enclave is Wychwood Park (only 2 circular streets really) near Davenport and Christie. Includes the former home of Marshall McLuhan. Was an artists colony, so the houses look less regal, more cottage-y. Also, less well known is The Wynd, between Islington and Kipling, north from Rathburn.
I did a walk through Wychwood Park a few years ago! Interesting area.
I am retired now. When the weather is warm, I want to walk around this neighbourhood. Look at nice big houses. I thought the Old Mill area has nice big houses too. 😊
You should do it!
I grew up in North Rosedale. It was considered better than S. Rosedale where You are. Highland Avenue across from Rosedale Park was the best street. Dead end portion.
I lived on Crescent Rd in the 70's and used to love going to Mayfair at Rosedale Park. Had my first guitar lessons at Moordale House in 1971.
YEAH! SURE YOU DID MUNGO-JERRY! YOU REALLY GREW-UP IN A BASEMENT APARTMENT IN BLOOR AND SPADINA, WHERE YOU LIVE TO THIS DAY!!!💥💥💥💥💥

Another spectacular beautiful shooting filming footage compilation walk away tour and you rock it all again .. thanks Ken
You bet!
Ken, how come you didn't mention the Integral House you walked past at the end? It's right next to David Thomson's brown house. It's one of the best known architecturally significant modern homes in Toronto. It was designed by a mathematician who combined math and music elements into its design. It's now owned by other people. In recent years symphony concerts were held there.
My bad. I would have if I knew it was there!
also trek the old forest hill neighbourhood
That was so fun!!!
I couldn't say a cordial "adieu" bcuz my phone became of its own mind.
🌳
haha No worries.
Nice walk Ken
Thanks!
I had a school chum, many years ago in the 90s, whose dad owned that abandoned-looking mansion on Beaumont… I BELIEVE. It has been some time since I visited the place, but it was looking worn out even then.
Ah, interesting!
My Great Grandmother, who was a British Home Child, cleaned some of these homes in the early 1900s. My Mom says she could be a bit of a snob as I guess she took on the airs of the peoples whose homes she cleaned. LOL. I enjoyed the walk, thanks.
haha Glad you enjoyed it.
Would love to see it during winter snow
Beaumont south side with the forest ridge makes for some easy, attractive winter pictures.
Maybe I'll go back in the winter!
Nice walk through in a nice neighborhood. I suppose old money isn’t as ostentatious as new money. I wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at the streets and the houses that this was the famous Rosedale. I’m surprised actually that the houses are visible and not covered by tall trees and hedges or tall sold fencing. I think in Vancouver the equivalent old money neighborhood is Shaughnessy on a specific section on the west part of Vancouver. And then there’s also in North Vancouver the British Properties. I don’t think I have ever had th3 occasion to walk through either ‘hoods… maybe one day I will.
Once the leaves come out it looks a lot more green and the houses are harder to see behind the trees.
When I first came to Toronto, many moons ago, I was surprised at how close these gorgeous houses were to each other , and how small their lots were, relatively speaking. However if you look at parts of London, and even New York, not all rich people like to live secluded lives behind gates and acres of land. I like to think if I was rich, I would love to love in any of these houses! Great tour!
Very nice walk
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this walk in Rosedale to see the homes of Geddy Lee, Gordon Lightfoot and David Thomson. Thanks, Ken. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, Marg!
As of Jan 2024 David is worth 62 Billion
My old neighbourhood. Oscar Peterson was our neighbour.
How cool is that?
i want to see more of the homes you scan so fast.
My bad, but thanks for watching.
Roy made the family fortune - David Thomson inherited it from his father
Roy Thomson was in the newspaper business in a big way in Canada and England - but became a billionaire by investing in North Sea oil. David Thomson got out of print newspapers and now owns the news service Reuters.
No tents, drug distribution centres, hostels, soup kitchens, public housing, nothing to depict poverty, troubled lives or whatever. Wouldn’t mind living there.
As someone who grew up in 'the country', I find it hilarious that these are considered nice homes and worth so much. I wouldn't want to live there at all - too congested and too many neighbours.
Yup, it's more about the name, the prestige, the historical ties for the impossibly wealthy. But then again, they probably own multiple homes, including some in warmer climes, tax shelters, etc.
Many city’s have nice neighborhoods within spitting distance of a downtown core
❤
Don't think I'd be very happy if someone was putting my location for all to see
It's public knowledge who lives in these homes.
I can't believe how crappy streets and roads look like , full of cracks and holes all over this city!?! Don't you have infrastructure??
The streets definitely need a lot of work.
Nice neighbourhood but the traffic noise is awful.
Get away from my house Ken
Geddy?
These poor people need a tax break, right Douggie?
Not just one one tax break. And I think Mr Man-of-the People upped payroll taxes while cutting rich people taxes.
Moving Pictures and Subdivisions
its k-k-k-k ken and he's walking into my neighborhood.
h-h-h-hey there!
Maybe that Castle is Geddy Lee's house ?
haha Apparently he owns the house next to the one I pointed out as his as well.
maybe his dauthers house?
Wonder how much those houses were sold for when it was first build
Good question.
These streets and houses seem badly overpriced. When liquidity gets out of hand, the market stops pricing commodities reasonably. I've seen highly priced houses in other locations. And the one I've owned then seems incredibly economical. People like Thomson should have acres and acres of land, something like on the Dallas show.
Just checked 60 billion approx.
And that's USD! Wowza.
i heard on the program the world its a radio program from npr and pri it tells news stories from around the world toronto was one of todays news stories talking about the price of food being very expensive the people in toronto are very angry with loblaws they want to boycott it syracuse use to have a loblaws when i was a kid
Hate Toronto. Too many people. Real estate is ridiculously high.
I live in a small town and whenever I go to TO, I immediately feel anxiety beforehand.
Beautiful homes you’re showing but some of our homes here, are as beautiful if not more so and they are right on the Lake and so much less expensive!
My favourite, Windsor On home is For Sale right now! Just over 3 million. It once belonged to our 21st Prime Minister. (Martin) Look it up. Al Capone used to deal in business there.
Vancouver's Shaughnessy is much nicer.
Could you smell the money Ken? 😁
Better than smelling what's all over the sidewalks in my neighbourhood. hah
It's funny how these big tax payers are ok with sh*tty Toronto roads.
If any of you Rosedale residents want to put a vegetable/flower garden in, let me know.
I have tons of composted organic horse manure, a truck, and a love for turnin' earth.
Rich
Yup
Hi Ken, for the sake of safety and respect could you please edit this video and blackout Geddy’s full address. He and his family deserve their privacy. Thank you
Well, it's public knowledge that he lives there, so I don't think he and his family have to worry about anything shown in my video.
I looked him up as of 2024 he is wort 64. Something billion
Who? Ken?
Yep, and that's in USD!
so David Thompson drives a Honda minivan and is possibly a vanlifer.
haha
The wealth boogles my mind. How are those large properties managed? Seems like actually there is a fair bit of people in the top 1%.
I have to say I get annoyed when TH-camrs point the camera at themselves instead of at the topic they are filming. You are the opposite. Thank you. Except, I did wonder what you looked like. A couple of shots of yourself is just fine. Thanks for the tour.
😄
haha I also get annoyed when the camera is on their face instead of the surroundings.
D.THOMPSON 2024 NET-WORTH = 70-BILLION USD !!!
Wonder if these homes are being hit with any crimes? Surprised houses are not even fenced in or gated in like drakes.
Lol the rents..probably 5k a month. No effort trust there.
Very nice and thanks for the walking tour! There are dozens of small towns in Ontario with houses as nice or even nicer than those and that cost a fraction of those artificially over-priced homes. Less crime too - although that's changing thanks to Trudeau's catch and release program 🙄. Great video!

I gave you a thumbs down. Sure you're not breaking any laws but Geddy Lee doesn’t need someone hanging around his house. Not cool.
It's public knowledge that he lives there and I literally just walked past the house on the sidewalk. There was no "hanging around."
I wasn’t referring to you hanging out but to others who may get the idea after watching your video.
Fascinating.: “not sure how long Gordon Lightfoot lived there.” “ not sure what David Thomson is worth”. “ …his father or grandfather, I’m not sure which was Roy Thomson”. Video is a complete waste of time. I’ll go for the walk myself.
Blood money you mean. It's properties like these that have caused the shortage of land to use to build housing on for the majority of Canadians. Tear down those mansions and build affordable housing.
No, no, no 90% of canadas land called crown land. No one can touch it and is owned by a guy named charles across the atlantic. He took it and created his own royal police in Canada in 1867. Only 10% of canadas land is owned by private homeowners. Please do your history research on canadas available land.
@whathandleUtalkabt actually the provinces own more land. Almost 50%. And the Federal Government, with the new budget plans to unlock more federal land to build affordable homes for Canadians.
@whathandleUtalkabt And large mansions and other homes with large properties are the reason for such shortages in land to build. The types of housing past generations built have created the huge problems so many cities are encountering with shortages of land.
