    Such an amazing design for a bow, the asymmetrical shape, the bamboo back a tempered bamboo belly, and the laminated side by side tempered strips of bamboo core with hardwood edge strips. I have made about 80 bows of many types, but making a yumi and having it come out balanced without being able to tiller the belly is truly an art form. I managed it half a dozen times in a traditional longbow shape in all bamboo, but wouldn’t know where to start on a yumi

    Am I the only person who believe that the yumi is that one weapon that made other soldiers think " oh sh*t" when it was seen

      Yes indeed, that’s why bamboos are notorious for getting out of their allocated spot and growing wild, causing neighbourly disputes over blocked pipes or damaged foundations. Basically, bamboo is a pretty looking weed.

    The training back then really did focus on how every human was a disposable cog in a larger human-machine, rather than a renewable resource that could be manipulated to gain further and long-duration benefit from.

    A 23 kilo draw long bow is not a fair comparison. Would also wager that bows intended to draw and shoot from horseback just can't max out draw weight the way a bow intended to shoot on foot can. You just have better positioning and leverage with your feet planted and legs beneath you.
    "Shot from the ground, the umi out performs the longbow". No, the umi outperforms a 1/2 strength long bow. They're just different tools for different roles. Maybe you get to this later but jeez.

    • @SilverforceX
      @SilverforceX ปีที่แล้ว +3

      None of this is accurate. Manchu bows from centuries ago has a draw weight of 120-180 pounds, for horse-back archery. As for the Japanese Yumi, these are for target practice, 40 pounds max. The war-bow Yumi had more layers and were on record, 45-67kg draw weight. Surviving samples in Japanese museums proved it.

    Westerners don't realize that the Yumi as they know it, is ceremonial and for target practice. In Samurai times, they had the War-variant, where it took 3 men to string, which each "men" being a measure of ~60 pounds draw weight. There are surviving War Yumi samples at temples & museums which have been tested and their draw weight range from 120 to 200 pounds.

      I find it ridiculous that anyone would actually be drawing a 200 pound bow. In what circumstance would that even be necessary, assuming you had an archer strong enough to draw and fire it effectively

    After learning about the the failed Mongol invasion of Vietnam, I learn to appreciate the design of Japanese bow. It was made in consideration of the environment/climate...something which the Mongols failed to adapt or innovate. In many places where the Mongols were defeated it all either related to the defects of their bows or their needs to disperse their horses for pastures.

    9:20, that has nothing to do with the style of bow and more with archers poor decision to use overspined arrows.

      Of course there are pros and cons to every kind of bow.

      Thats not true.During the Imijin-war the yumi-bow was used alongside with the tepo and the nagayari against the heavy cavalry of the chinese and korean troops efficient.On land the japanese overwhelmed the korean troops in most of the battles and bows and firearms made the japanese very successful on the battlefield.There were no tepo(arcebusers)that were not supported by yumi archers during the entire sengoku jidai.
