In case you were wondering: since there have been 30 teams (2001 onwards) the average number of teams to make the playoffs after missing the year prior is almost exactly 5 (4.95 average, 2020-2022 excluded from data set). That includes three recent seasons where 7 teams made it back to the playoffs (2015,2017,2018) which included 5 (😦) Eastern teams jumping back in the playoffs in 2017. Can you make a video redesigning the divisions? Personally think it would be cool to see 8 divisions of 4 teams. The top 2 in each division qualify for the playoffs and face each other in the Quarter Finals!
I don’t like that because you could have a division of four bad teams, none of which deserve to make the playoffs. And another division could have four really good teams, and two of those get left out. You see that in the NFL all the time. For the playoffs they should go back to seeding the teams 1 through 8.
I think the East stays the same as last season except the Devils make it instead of the Isles or Caps. The Flyers definitely ran out of gas last year.
For three years, I've been asking for the Rangers to prove they can roll in the postseason, instead of just getting there. All that high end talent, and it always boils down to Shesti keeping them in most games
@@nikitasviridov1792 the Leafs are a different brand of failure. The Rags are disappointing because in both of those conference finals appearances, they choked in brutal fashion against the Panthers (who were the better team) and a weakened Lightning squad where they dropped four straight after winning two. Not to mention laying an egg against the Devils in a game 7 AFTER choking that series.
I agree but in terms of winning the cup I think they are the weakest. Florida is VERY much a cup contender but that’s all you got. You got oilers Canucks/ vegas, Avs stars, rangers, canes in the rest. In terms of competing for playoffs absolutely
I’m surprised BOS is so low on these predictions. After getting bullied by FL two years in a row, they’ve taken a page out of their book and built their roster for playoff hockey. McAvoy is their smallest D, and their bottom six wingers are big bruisers who can skate on the forecheck. 2nd tallest team on average, 1st heaviest team on average, 6th youngest team on average.
other than the panthers, the next 7 to me can easily like picking them out of a bag. Toronto Tampa and the bruins either through pieces moving on, historical deficiencies (toronto), aging squads, and lack of shoring up, and the bottom 4 growing and building I can see a shift and would not be surprised if all 4 of the bottom teams squeak in and pass 3 of the 4 top teams. Those that pan montreal, last year they were not an easy win and if my memory serves they were in the most 1 goal games. So they added talent and if players they lost through injury stay healthy, they can win 6-10 games more. I would not bet for them to win the cup, but looking at the division i see an increasing parity because of the cycles of the teams that were at the top and the bottom teams are all on an uptick. I still see toronto further down the slope, as I do boston, and especially tampa. Tampa lost too much talent and don't have the prospects to step up to maintain their spot. Boston is becoming a goalie team, and losing their 1b to ottawa puts them an injury away from the lottery. Toronto on top of getting older, losing parts, have not addressed their unbalanced team, and like I said the bottom teams are primed to speed their return to league's bottom (as long as Shanahan is there they remain a pretender at best). Sport can be cruel and the Atlantic will become cut throat island
I think if Montreal can stay 75% healthier than last season, they will win much more of those 1 goal games they ended up losing (they had the most 1 goal games in the league last yr) and they can be better than at least 3 of the other Atlantic teams
I really think people are overstating the Hurricanes losses this off season. Same with the Devils additions. I think, if anything, the Devils have risen to the level of the Hurricanes and Rangers. Those three teams are going to be very even matchups this year. The Hurricanes have added scoring defensemen, Kochetkov is just getting better, Necas is going to turn it on this year, Jarvis is now going to get 1st line minutes with Aho and Svechnikov, last year he was a 3rd liner with Staal and Martinook. Then there are some really good rookies coming into the team this year as well.
I expect Carolina to make the playoffs, but they do have a very realistic chance of getting poor goaltending next season and missing the playoffs. Their goaltending got off to a very bad start last season and then turned it around a little before the midpoint of the season. But I wouldn't be surprised if their goaltending gets off to a bad start again next season, and doesn't turn things around early enough or strongly enough to make the playoffs.
The Hockey News HATES the Red Wings. Dunno what we ever did to them lol. I also can’t see Buffalo finishing behind Ottawa. I think Buffalo has issues…like, NO ONE plays defense…but Ottawa just seems like it’s a shit show. My hot take is…I think the order in the Atlantic is…Florida, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, Tampa. I think Tampa is in decline and trying to use bubble gum and duct tape to keep it together. I think losing Stammer and Sergachev is gonna hurt them.
I think the Metro is the most competitive 4 to 7 with an outside chance of 3rd being up in the air, too. 4 to 7 beating each other closer to .500 makes the only 3 from the Metro pretty likely. But I hope not.
Is Columbus above the cap floor and do they receive any consideration from the league due to the circumstances? The East is tough, but lets have another team flounder like NJD did...
People that haven't watched the Lightning only look at stats and don't realize Stammer was awful at 5v5 and Kuch set him up on a platter for all of the PP goals. And then people don't realize Serg missed most of the season last year and they got better with Moser and McD
Expecting great things from Michkov. The big 'if' for the Flyers is, of course, goaltending. I'm betting on Kolosov emerging. Agreed on all except the Caps and Flyers, who I'd flip their places.
Montreal could finish 5th/6th if everything is lined up, Laine goes back to being Laine, all the young players improves, Matheson keeps his offensive production going, if they have no major injuries, goaltending overperforms, if Gally/Andy are passable and they make 1 or 2 additional great moves. Thats a lot of ifs. Realistically too many elements are unproven and green to even consider them over 7th before games are played, Buffalo is stagnating.
Not really. You're asking for the stars to align, on top of Montembeault to not play like the backup goalie he's destined to be. Buffalo is mediocre, but they're at least consistently mediocre.
@@cmz5847 and the other teams in the east? You really think phi will beat out Ottawa buffalo or Detroit? Don’t see it happening. One of the worst tandem in the league. Even if they have michkov with a huge season, can’t prevent goals.
@@stefan1132the only team that got better in the metro is the caps. And they’re still extremely mid but could surprise. They’re at least finishing 5th with a ceiling of 3rd
It’s always about injuries and missed ice time. Detroit will make the play offs if they avoid major injuries. No big deal if they miss, hopefully, they will see a lot more minutes for the new generation of youth that should make the wings Stanly Cup challengers for the next few years.
Devils will be in the mix with the rangers for 1st if they can stay healthy. Carolina could go the way of Boston last year when they lost so many pieces, becoming a stingy systems team under Brind’amour
Of all the teams in the Atlantic, it`ll be interesting to see how Tampa Bay does this year after losing two key players in Stamkos and Sergachev. They seem to look good offensively and have an elite goalie in Vasilevskiy, but they might have the worst defense core (on paper) of the projected top-four teams in the Atlantic. My guess is at best they finish fourth and make the playoffs, but lose in the first round.
Unfortunately I beleive he is spot on with the flyers. Torts had an average team playing well above their ability. Questionable goaltending and holes everywhere in the lineup will be exploited. Unfortunately the stench of Chuckles the Incompetent Clown will remain in the franchise. The good news is their salary structure will improve after this season I thought when db was hired, it’d be 3-5 yrs before getting back into the playoffs. Unless they shock us this season, my prediction will be true. Unfortunately Chuckles, along with Homer and Clarkie (and the failure of Hexy) have made this franchise virtually unsalvageable If they don’t hit on their three first round picks next season and make substantial growth next summer, it will be much longer until they turn it around
Especially with luke hughes being hurt , you could make an argument 7 of best 8 east teams are from the atlantic , thats why they need to drop this shitty playoff format and go back to 1v8 2v7
It's so frustrating that in order for Buffalo to break the no playoffs streak, we can't just squeak in but have to surpass one of these elite Atlantic teams and all of the other risers. Getting to the point we are just gonna be locked out no matter how many things we do right from here forward. 14, 15, 16 years here we come...
It wouldn't be surprising at all to see them finish 4th in that division. Those other teams are really good. I could also see them winning it but is Swayman a guy who can play 65 games? Time will tell on that. B's are in a tough spot. This might the year they fall off when so many predicted it would be last season.
Like for real. We're not screaming playoff team, but there's no way in my mind that they for sure finish 8th. I see them at 6th (worst) and possibly higher...
@@zors5188 I see them a lot like the Devils team, injuries kept the Devils from being in the mix last year, and in the same way Montreal has had that happen 3 years in a row. A healthy season will stun the Atlantic division.

The leafs will miss there playoff so that Matthews will not loose a playoff game and can recover early in the summer by some rounds of golf. Detroit with Kane and a strong Seider will make the playoffs and go to the conference final. Cheers!
Yeah it's a muggs game trying to predict the season ahead of time. Im afraid Bobrovsky may, after winning his cup, struggle to have a good full season. They dont have a back up they can count on. I like Detroit making the playoffs. Ithink boston may have a better regular season. Poor Buffalo and Ottawa and Detroit. Montreal improves a little but I don't think .500. @@joeb2151 I think the window has already closed on PIT. Karlsson was not the answer. I'll concede NYI, especially since they added DuClair. But I really think people are gonna be surprised by the Philly. They're gonna be defensively tough again, and Michkov will take the PP out of the basement. We'll see. The Flyers definitely ran out of gas last year.
For three years, I've been asking for the Rangers to prove they can roll in the postseason, instead of just getting there. All that high end talent, and it always boils down to Shesti keeping them in most games
Just getting there? Two conference finals in three years is considered to be "Just getting there"? Tell it to the Leafs fans 😀
Rangers = no cojones
I mean, that’s been the story since Lundqvist, hasn’t it?
@@tehbeernerd pretty much. If they develop a bite or some killer instinct, then we're talking
The Atlantic division gotta be the strongest overall division in NHL history! I am high on the Habs but I would still pit them last.
I agree but in terms of winning the cup I think they are the weakest. Florida is VERY much a cup contender but that’s all you got. You got oilers Canucks/ vegas, Avs stars, rangers, canes in the rest. In terms of competing for playoffs absolutely
@@jasonkashefi8241 disagree there
@@jasonkashefi8241 You never know, Atlantic division teams made most cup finals in the last 10 years
I’m surprised BOS is so low on these predictions.
I hope that the belief in Buffalo is rewarded, maybe Lindy can get them going
Buffalo "Tutaunka" ....yep they get in
other than the panthers, the next 7 to me can easily like picking them out of a bag.
But I wouldn't be surprised if their goaltending gets off to a bad start again next season, and doesn't turn things around early enough or strongly enough to make the playoffs.
unless the devils add at least another solid offensive piece they’re going to have a lot more issues than ppl seem to think
Why? Despite them not even making the playoffs last year, their offensive play was the best in the division and one of the best in the conference.
TOR, NYR, NJ will make the playoffs, after that who knows.
Sens will make it this year! Ullmark will de the difference.
The Hockey News hopes and aspirations were destroyed by the wings in the 90's and 2000's
I think the Metro is the most competitive 4 to 7 with an outside chance of 3rd being up in the air, too. 4 to 7 beating each other closer to .500 makes the only 3 from the Metro pretty likely. But I hope not.
One of Buffalo, Detroit, or Ottawa have to make the playoffs this year. Boston or Tampa could fall out
Penguins will be in the playoffs this year, calling it out early
Is Columbus above the cap floor and do they receive any consideration from the league due to the circumstances? The East is tough, but lets have another team flounder like NJD did...
Columbus is below the cap floor by 3million.
@@ijxrxmy Thanks, so they will bring someone in, tough position
With no injury like last 3 years theres no way mtl finish last if they do gonna be a big step back in their rebuild
My man just had almost no love for buffalo, you're killing me Shannon. I'm calling for them to hut 4th,maybe 3rd and be the shocker of the Atlantic .
montreal will surprise you..mark my words
Gonna mark it with a X now🤣
It's always Oilers. Canadians just tug away the shiny toy in hope it will bring that cup back to Canada. It won't
Flyers disrespect duly noted
Your flyers bias is showing. Not sure how you can honestly argue Philly being up any higher besides michkov
@@stefan1132 they were 1 win away from playoffs last year, the young core will be a year older and better, plus adding Michkov….?

Bos, Fla, Tor, Ott, TB, Mon, Det, Buf
NJ, NYR, Car, Was, NYI, Pitt, Phi, Clb

how long can the isles "overachieve" before people realize maybe they might just be decent
I hope the Pens make the playoffs one more year with Crosby
Caps will make it over redwings again, they sneakily improved
Unfortunately I beleive he is spot on with the flyers. Torts had an average team playing well above their ability. Questionable goaltending and holes everywhere in the lineup will be exploited. Unfortunately the stench of Chuckles the Incompetent Clown will remain in the franchise. The good news is their salary structure will improve after this season
I thought when db was hired, it’d be 3-5 yrs before getting back into the playoffs. Unless they shock us this season, my prediction will be true. Unfortunately Chuckles, along with Homer and Clarkie (and the failure of Hexy) have made this franchise virtually unsalvageable
If they don’t hit on their three first round picks next season and make substantial growth next summer, it will be much longer until they turn it around

Especially with luke hughes being hurt , you could make an argument 7 of best 8 east teams are from the atlantic , thats why they need to drop this shitty playoff format and go back to 1v8 2v7
Montreal will have more points than Buffalo and Ottawa.
Love that you are willing to put out a prediction.

Dude Ottawa is like 14-0 against the Habs in the last 3 years and they just picked up Ullmark. Good luck with that

Wsh improved goal, D and forwards. They will be 7 or 8
It's so frustrating that in order for Buffalo to break the no playoffs streak, we can't just squeak in but have to surpass one of these elite Atlantic teams and all of the other risers. Getting to the point we are just gonna be locked out no matter how many things we do right from here forward. 14, 15, 16 years here we come...
Wings BETTER MAKE IT.

You dont even have a starting goalie yet.

It wouldn't be surprising at all to see them finish 4th in that division. Those other teams are really good. I could also see them winning it but is Swayman a guy who can play 65 games? Time will tell on that. B's are in a tough spot. This might the year they fall off when so many predicted it would be last season.
Agreed, they will finish first and that's coming from a Panthers fan.
I think if swayman gets signed Boston will be better than Tampa but could be interesting
I can see things not clicking for Ottawa out of the gate and them falling to the basement again
I will be inconsolable if so
No chance Pit misses the playoffs again.
Of course there is. Where did they improve?

Like for real. We're not screaming playoff team, but there's no way in my mind that they for sure finish 8th. I see them at 6th (worst) and possibly higher...
@@zors5188 I see them a lot like the Devils team, injuries kept the Devils from being in the mix last year, and in the same way Montreal has had that happen 3 years in a row. A healthy season will stun the Atlantic division.

Devils and Rangers will have a dogfight for first in the Metro. I think the Devils will scrape out a title, but it’ll be close.
Same four will make the playoffs in the Atlantic with a bonus team in Buffalo taking the second WC. The Wings just don’t inspire me in any way and the Sens hired a bad coach. Caps and Islanders will drop out.
For the caps 🧢 the only thing I can’t see is winning the division or the President’s trophy 🏆
Bostons entire team is 30 or younger except for marchy and coyle at 36 and 32. Saying theyre going to fall off because of age is a lazy take.
No Marchand. They looked completely out of answers offensively with him last year against Panthers amd Leafs. But I think they’ll be 3rd in Atantic.
@ericsummers1230 that's marchy bud, their only player over 32.. off the top of my head the leafs have patches, tanev, and tavarez all over 35. The leafs and panthers are both older teams than boston. Calling boston an aging team is a lazy take.
New York Oilanders.
Atlantic is stacked...
Keep doubting the Islanders. Every year they are expected to drop off. And they don't.
There will be so many "so called" experts doing an about face on Montreal by the end of the season it will be fun just listening to the back peddling. One of the games in my Islander season plan is the Canadiens...really looking forward to that game.😊
