- Did the #Huskies lose the Apple Cup because of the play call - or because of the execution??
In the latest episode of ‘Dawg Talk w/ Brock,” Former UW QB Brock Huard and former UW head coach Chris Petersen debate the Huskies final play in the 2024 #AppleCup at Lumen Field that sent the WSU Cougars home victorious for the first time since 2021.
Brock shares what he Thinks, Learned, and Knows following the week 3 loss before being joined by Coach Chris Petersen who breaks down more from the game, regrets he’s had as a coach, and how a team bounces back after an emotional loss.

Dang wish Coach Pete was still at the Helm what a Treat he is.
He looks like he's enjoying his life more in the jobs he has now. I'm happy for him.

Here's the thing: If you're not an option team, and you call option, you shouldn't expect it to work. The Huskies can only call speed option when they have a down to waste. Yes, it might pay off huge...but it also might blow up in your face. It cannot be the "gotta have it" play for a team that isn't built around the option.
The biggest shame is Coach Fisch didn't know what play to call at the end and was looking over his play sheet. Don James would've known in August what he was going to run there.
Coach Peterson said if it’s not part of your core identity, don’t run it in that situation. Clearly Fisch doesn’t know his own team’s core identity. He obviously is no DeBoer.
@@aaah8447sure thing boss. Kalen lost to a poor UCLA and Arizona his first year. Let's get a body of work to examine...... Arizona has a real nice body of work to look back on.
@@paulkysar6207truth. Crazy that people bringing up past coaches like they were flawless. We knew coming into this year it would be difficult with all the turnover. Coaches are still learning each other and the players. Peterson didn’t have a perfect season his first year here. Don James lost to an Oregon State team that we were favored by four touchdowns, but all I hear is such and such wouldn’t happen if Don James was coach. This loss sucked, but WSU wanted it more in a game we weren’t that highly favored. There is still a lot of growth that needs to happen and it won’t come overnight. Try to enjoy the ride and process.
This team is not a super experienced team yet. Lots of new pieces, lots of new coaches. I think there's a lot of potential, but mistakes will be made early this season. Washington State was good enough that the Huskies couldnt afford those mistakes. Will need to grow fast before Michigan, Penn State, USC and a couple others... otherwise a winning season and a bowl game will be difficult to attain.

Did you like when, given the chance to choose UO or some other non pac12 team in the final 4 (within last couple years I don't remember which) he chose the other team over the ducks?
I’m a Duck fan but I think Huard and Peterson are two of the best analysts in football. I always learn something from them.

In that last play, there was no misdirection or motion, also why didn't they spread out the defense? Plus that offensive line just is not good enough to run that type of play there was no way they were going block that play right.
I thought they could have put Jackson in motion to the wide side pulling a defender with him with an option to throw to him.

Why Will in at QB and not Demond? Will doesn't have the speed to run speed option. He is dealing in the passing game though.
Coleman stayed too close to Will and blocking didn't hit correct guy

We knew there would be stumbling out of the gate. I don't expect Fisch to get DeBoer results but we'll see. I watched both Coug games and knew they were scrappy. It is what it is. Regroup, fix things and head back out

Brock first said on 710 Apple Cup probably a 10 pt spread, told it was only 4 and now not shocked they lost. he had 0 clue about the Cougs
Nobody had a clue about the Cougars yeah we saw 70 points the week before but nobody thought they coming to Seattle and stuff are run game on 3rd and one times and of course on 4th and goal nobody saw that coming the Cougars defense left many people mystified

I think that the Huskies gave the game away w/ 16 penalties. This will be cleaned up; and move forward. Go Dawgs!
First - GO COUGS!
Second - The Huskies needed less than 2 yards to score the go ahead TD - You call a play that all of your data and experience tells you is a 2 yard play most of the time.
Third - Execution is the key. The COUGS executed on D and the dogs didn't.
The good news for me is that the Cougs won. Now I can root for the Huskies for the rest of the year without guilt.
I can think of 3 for Petersen. 2014 @Arizona instead of kneeling on the ball runs it...We fumble and Arizona scores and wins the game. 2018 @oregon instead of handing the ball off to get a little closer for a FG kicks it and miss the FG. Lose in OT. And 2019 vs oregon gets conservative against the ducks in 4th. End up losing.
Petersen needs to listen to what Dickert said postgame. Wazzu knew it was coming and baited UW into it, the crime was not having Rogers be able to option out AND the fact that Giles was the original target before the TO. Game was lost before kickoff.
Last year we lost because our kicker missed two field goals.

Rome Odunze was picked 9th, not 10th.

Definitely still the Apple Cup that’s an idiotic take. Cougs outplayed, out coached when it mattered end of story.
You also never run speed option into the boundary on the goal line. Wildcat with Jonah would’ve had a higher probability of scoring

You run it up the gut with your stud running back when you are a yard away from the W. End of story. It's possibly your last play of the game, why try and overthink it and run a play that has far more variables, and thus far more possibilities for error.

Well it was a horrible call because it didn’t work, but remember last year. Same 4th down call won the game. Come on guys. You know how that works.

Fisch doesn’t have very much success as a HC. Overrated. As a Coug, I hope they keep him.

This is his fourth year as head coach and he's still learning, I hope.
He took over a dumpster fire at UA and improved each year. Context is everything.
This is his fourth year, so not sure how we can jump to an “overrated” conclusion especially how his first three years went. Arizona was trending up before he left and it was not a school that was in a good place when he took over. We really don’t know at this point, but I love the recruiting, mix of experience he picked up, his NFL philosophy and the network of coaching contacts he has if assistants move on. I think that should be a recipe for success.
AZ might very well have beat UW last year if they had played them later in the season.
I am a uw graduate, I think the rivalry is still there. Huard is a poser. Someone did a great job pumping up his ego to this age. I guess some people really practice fake it till you make it.

The humorous thing about this is watching WSU act like they haven't been there before whenever the Huskies stomp Oregon you never see the commentary so full we move on to the next game because we know that we've been there before we stomped Oregon we've stomped WSU these teams they get one simple win and it's like the super bowl to them and of course they act like they haven't been there before because they haven't
