    If you want to get better at painting you need to learn how to capture shadows. Shadows is what makes our painting look 3-dimensional because they help us "frame" light on paper. In this video I will show you how to observe and capture shadows with watercolor using this white shell as a study.

      Thank you so much Deborah 😀 This one was fun to make albeit a niche subject {as I can see from relatively low view count hehe } but that's OK! I find these topics are worth exploring in depth sometimes as it helps me to improve my own process. The best part is that these rules work just as well on white / light buildings / urban scenes with strong shadows - even on faces [if you add an underlying skin tone} so many fun subjects to practice on!... Have a wonderful day :)

      I forgot to add that the tip about the yellow is outstanding. So often one starts with the yellows, so that is a rule that is made to be broken,as the saying goes. When I took workshops with the late Diane Maxey (she did a lot of florals and still lifes), her favorite color to glaze with was yellow.

    Anna, your varied use of color in your shadows is both illuminating and inspirational. It really just makes my heart happy. I am an intermediate artist and though I’ve followed a large number of artists in my self-taught artistic journey, you are the first I’ve seen to use such beautiful color, as opposed to “greyed” shadows, and I am so excited to try this in my own art. Thank you for sharing your time and honed talent. It has been incredibly eye opening! Blessings for a joyous holiday season. 🌈🎄🎉

    Really enjoying these shadow videos. Shadows always my favourite part of the process and I always want to just jump to them and get that dark in. But! It does not always reward me…. Your step by step gradual application is brilliant and I love the addition of reflected light colours and no greys. This shell looks super fun.

I know exactly what you are talking about - filming requires a whole new set of skills (not to mention equipment!) and it took me ~ 4 years to figure out the details (I am still a beginner when it comes to cameras and gave to watch tutorials on everything- from lighting to audio to editing) it’s like a 2nd job at this point 😊 but as long as you are having fun and enjoying the process - your channel will grow and you will get more and more comfortable! 💜💜💜

    Thank you for the tutorial, Anna! I love seeing colorful shadow, but I suck at it 😅
    I have a question; do you have any tips on overcoming the fear of painting hard edges? Especially when painting shadows like in step 2 when you started painting the flower shadow. Whenever I paint hard edges shadows, it always ends up ugly and I soften it up a little in the end but not lost edges 😥

    • @AnnaBucciarelli
      @AnnaBucciarelli  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shadows are not easy - I totally get it! I would recommend diluting the pigment more {keep in mind it looks darker when wet, but also a bit more contrast in video vs. real life}. Go lighter at first and glaze more slowly to see where you end up. Another thing that might help is to make sure the background is completely dry when you add more layers. And finally, I find transparent pigments work much better for glazing - anthing granulating always tends to muddy up the colors. Hope this helps! :)

    The main subject is amazing, the shell is exquisite and you really master light! But you are overdoing it, with the flowers behind, the main subject is getting lost... in real photo, the background flowers would probably be a bit blurred (depth of focus), or maybe playing with contrast... there is nowhere for the eyes to rest, it feels burdened and heavy. This doesn't change the fact that you really have a great talent and you really master watercolors ❤
