An excellent bunch. The Krebbers with Haitink is terrific, I agree. Glad to see Kreisler included, an artist whose old school style I greatly enjoy. For those who might be interested, there is an upload on TH-cam of a 1988 FM radio broadcast recording with Kyung Wha Chung and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the Klaus Tennstedt, that I can recommend.
I went to a Brahms concert where the woman I was dating was able to get tickets for the Violin Concerto op. 77 many years ago when I lived in Washington DC in the 70's. I was so impressed with this concerto, while I was not really that much into Classical music. I can't recall who was doing this Violin Concerto at the time but I somehow purchased a version by Arthur Grumiaux and Colin Davis with the New Philharmonia Orchestra that I have been playing for years, off and on. You have not mentioned this particular recording. I can't compare it to others but I am going to now just to hear the different versions, as well as Violin Concertos by Brahms. I just love the Violin in all genres of music. However, with so much time on my mind now, I have started to wonder about about other versions of this Concerto, as well as other works by Brahms. So I will start to review some of your selections. I have through the years listened to other Classical music by different Artists at various times, as well. I just love Beethoveen, particularly Symphony No. 6, Pastoral. I do venture into various genres of Jazz as well perhaps more consistently where I do favor the violin. The violin just does something to enhance any type of music.
I am very happy that you included some of the historic recordings of the Brahms. Most are preWWII and before the “American School” of violin playing took hold. I urge collectors to listen and compare the individual sounds and interpretations of Heifetz, Kreisler, Szigeti and Hubermann. And there are many other live and studio performances to delight the ear. How fortunate we are that these recordings are readily available.
The Krebbers/ Brahms is not out of print. It is available in the big Haitink complete Concertgebouw box. On Australian eloquence is coming up a complete Krebbers release!
I share your love for the Brahms violin concerto, all of it but especially the first movement, so thank you for this post. I searched for the Krebbers performance on your website but couldn't find it. Could you provide a link? thank you

Thank you for highlight the bagpipes solo in the Szigeti version
Grew up on and always listen to Zino Francescatti's recording with Eugene Ormandy.

It's also now available on iTunes and TH-cam from Universal as of three weeks ago, so perhaps spreading the word has finally helped the cause!
I also think Brahms two Piano Concertos are good too!

It was posted on August 3, right after my Symphonies recordings survey. Just click on my Videos.
Michèle Auclair is the most passionate version I ever listen
The Krebbers is out of print unfortunately :(
