I'm originally from Toronto living in Perth. A Thunder season seat holder and flew out for these games. I'm in your video at 3:17 haha. White perth jersey behind "Icehouse"
Should the NHL have more of a presence in Australia? The preseason games between the Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes in Melbourne seemed to be a good introductory start.
Nathan Walker is an Aussie who made it to the NHL and played in this league, he actually became the first Australian Stanley cup champion in 2018 when he was in the Capitals organization and got called up during their playoff run and scored a point!
Melbourne always draws the best crowds (Ice usually get more than Mustangs) as it is by far the biggest/best arena in the country which is why the playoffs have been held at the Icehouse every year since it opened in 2010 except for 2012 and 2019 which were in Newcastle and the covid cancelled seasons. I do believe both Adelaide and Canberra are supposed to be getting new rinks soon (both much needed) that will rival the Icehouse for best rink in the country
Hey what a great video. Thanks for sharing this, I hope you had a great time watching our league. Much love from the Melbourne Ice announcer, keep your videos coming.
Wow its come a long way since I watched a few games there in 2007 in the old half size rink on Oakleigh with about 15 other people. Great to see the game grow in Oz.
Hope you had a great time watching our league! The hockey community down here is tightknit and loyal as hell. Next time you're down here try to make it to the Melbourne derby match between the Ice and the Mustangs! Thats a whole different experience! (Go Ice!)
Unfortunately no. im canadian but i love staying up and watching the games online (even though its terrible for my sleep schedule)😂 big fan of yours btw keep up the good work!
Try the danish League… We have north Americans and canadians in almost every teams… My home teams is Frederikshavn White Hawks - we currently have two canadians… Todd Winder and Jared Freadrich
I was asked to play hockey in Sydney in 92 when I was travelling Aus. I had a borrowed pair of cheap Tacks (yes those ones) no gloves and a beaten up old wooden stick. It was like playing against 10 year old kids in Canada. Ice conditions were terrible and the rink was in a kind of aircraft hangar type structure. They got madder and madder at me as I skated around them like Guy Lafleur and they kept futiley trying to hip check or body check me even though everyone had pads and helmets but me. One frustrated big guy wanted to fight and actually chased me as I led him around the rink backwards until the refs stopped him. I was just a beer leaguer but for one magical game I was a star in Australia. Good to see things have improved, although it looks like there's quite a few foreigners playing here.
That was awesome to see! Love to see Hockey around the world becoming more and more popular, it's the best sport. Those boys played some solid heads-up hockey. Glad to see the game is being taught and played the best way around the world, with your head up and your stick on the ice. There's no surprises there either, Australians are upside down Canadians after all... or maybe us Canadians are the upside down Australians?
You should come cover a game or too in England of the National Ice Hockey League, it's the top standard for Brits really as the EIHL is full of imports, a massive influx of ECHL/Usports type level players recently, Tim Wallace ex NHL still plays and coaches one of the teams. a Memorial Cup winner coaches another
I'm so high right now, I honestly thought that this video was about an Australian seeing ice hockey for the first time and watched the entire video before I figured it out 😂
Note to self. Don't watch Greeley's videos at midnight when I'm starving. Looks like glorified North American beer league, which is hilarious. The arena is absolutely gorgeous. Its insane how bright it is in there. Quick question, what size is this rink? Those corners look huge.
It's a volunteer league, players will get help with housing and expenses. They may also be set up with a job within or with help from the organization so they can make some extra cash while not on the ice!
@@MbisonBalrog it’s amateur/semi-pro. Better than say Mexican, South African and New Zealand hockey but not as good as EIHL. I would say a tier lower than EIHL is best way to compare it.
Technically a semi-pro league but honestly outside of North America most games are less physical. Only the EIHL is a league that I've seen replicate North America's physicality aspects of the game tbh
@@RobertGreeley … makes sense. I enjoyed the experience and your narration. Good to see the game has fans down under. I hear there is also a semi-pro or club league for lacrosse as well in Australia. Is that true?

I've been watching the AIHL online from Alberta since finals weekend of 2012 when I happened to stumble across it on Twitter. Funny enough the guy who won the scoring race in 2012 had been traded for a good friend of mine while they were playing in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and due to the stipulations of the trade they had actually played a few months together. Been hoping to see an AIHL video from you for a while now, and couldn't be happier that it was a Melbourne Ice game. Go Ice!
@@RobertGreeley awesome, hope you stayed for playoffs/finals weekend coming up next weekend. Next time Robert you will have to make the trip to Canberra and come to a Canberra Brave game at the Brave Cave. Then you will get to experience a next level hockey atmosphere and a unique hockey rink.

Canadians should really make an effort to have closer ties with Australians. We have a greater closeness then with England.

How much players make down under?
This league they'll typically give you housing and hook you up with a job in the front office or coaching potentially!
how much do they make?
It is semi pro, so not a lot. The big money sports in Australia are AFL and NRL. And pro level Cricket.

Depends on how you count players with dual citizenship but I'd say 70% Australian, 30% import players depending on the team!
