I am beating a dead horse but the Democratic party died when they crushed Bernies run for POTUS. The man has so much to be justifiably angry about, but all he does is bang out his policy ideas and calls out all the stupid shit people do on both sides of the aisle. He could be living a nice life as a private citizen, but he is driven to share the truth and be at least some resistance to the status quo.

Every single member of my family living in LA County has had their home burglarized. That's 100%. The police didn't even bother showing up, just told them to come down to the station and fill out a report. I'll wager that the number of unreported crimes is 3-4x the official crime stats.

As a foreigner from a developing country which has crime, I was shocked when my American friends in San Francisco insisted it was not safe for me to leave my laptop bag and purse in the parked car while we stepped out for 30 mins to grab a takeaway lunch.
And then of course i was astounded to see the food prices in the supermarket and the number of houseless persons (and I was comparing to European cities on both). How is anyone surprised? Petty crime is common but car theft and house break-ins on the scale that was described to me seems horrific.

A lesson from history. Back in the 1930s, the Dust Bowl was ravaging the western and midwest states. Nobody cared. It wasn't until the dust storms reached the east coast cities that politicians, and people in general, decided to deal with the environmental disaster.
Same, more or less, happened with the illegal migrant crisis. It wasn't until the border states began sending migrants to sanctuary cities that people started to give a shit about the problem. Democrats, however, refused to acknowledge it and called everyone who raised concern a racist.
Now it's too late for progressives to change course, because they insisted on progressing themselves off a cliff.
The Great Woke Choke is finally here, and pretty much the entire planet is celebrating.

Okay, disclaimer: I'm Australian, never been to the US. But reading news, reading people in forums and talking to them, there is a *lot* of pain in the US. I had an interesting argument in a Facebook group, and the topic turned to that of the polarisation in the US. I ended up arguing with Dems who had a bizarrely extreme position. I pointed out that I was seeing more and more moderate Republicans who were moving into the centre, and there was *nothing* in response from the left. I was shouted down, and I had to point out that I was left wing in Australia, which means to me the Dems and Republicans are both right wing parties, so I had no bias about being pro-Republican. Yeah, it was pretty clear the Dems were in a nose dive, and they were completely blind. Here in Oz if a party has a calamitous result they go into a huddle and face their problems, well usually. If the Dems don't change they won't be back in power, same for the Republicans if they abandon the centre.

Yes violent crime statistics are down from the highs of the 70's and 80's and 90's and even during Trump's administration. That's not the problem. Non violent crime has jumped across the country especially in Progressive Cities that is the problem. And what are Republicans going to actually do anyway?
    Seriously what?
Homelessness is a problem in every city across the country in both Democrat and Republican States. Neither side in my 50 years has ever done anything to actually solve the issues behind homelessness. So don't try telling me that all of a sudden one side is going to fix it because you would be lying.
Economic wise by every measure except for one particular measure everything is better now than under Trump. Wages are higher. GDP growth is higher. Stock Markets are higher. But none of this matters because of rising prices across the board.

what to do? On average the US jurisdictions that increased prosecution saw drops in crime and those that reduced prosecution saw increases. We are not living in some Dickens era where people are stealing food to eat. What we are seeing is a hyper-predatory type of repeat crime by a small cadre of people who have learned why will not face meaningful prosecution. And like Ezra Klein I am a progressive who is sick and tired of Democrat soft on crime policies that demonstrate no care at all for the large pool of victims of crime.

But if you looked out your window and saw your friend on the train tracks and yelled at them for four years to move bc a train was coming... And then they got hit, you wouldn't be shocked and you probably aren't even that sad. Independent Media is the window that allows you to know the trains are coming and who is on the tracks. The mainstream media just calls you on the phone after the fact to tell you what happened.

Yep, you should take all the gangs from el Salvador. I am sure they will be good citizens because they are immigrants. What did thd Latino vote show you during this election, go and watch how they themselves don't want some immigration. I am not saying only immigrants cause violence, but it is one aspect. Lack of security brings fascism. If you can't understand this, then the left is doomed.

So, what position should Democrats take on crime and homelessness? Do we build more prisons? Do we criminalize homelessness? Do we just throw people away? I don't know what the answer is. I have been a victim of violent crime recently, I understand the frustration. We all know things don't work right and the government doesn't handle things well. What is the solution? My fear is people are all on the verge of letting a strong man "fix" all their issues. Republicans aren't going to fix anything, but they are much better at messaging and they will make people "feel" like they are safer and more prosperous. I "feel" like we are doomed, and are in a cycle where the long arc of history is bending towards authoritarianism not justice.

first : raise the minimum wage!
second : improve health care and sick pay so the sick don't become homeless.
      third : increase social security
fourth: create a network of small dispersed shelters (big box solutions are not good for the homeless)
fifth: offer mentorship to homeless individuals - can be volunteers. we need a dedicated helper for each person struggling to survive.
sixth : deregulate living in RV's on private property and yurts and alternative housing.
seventh : deregulate owner builders to build what they want to offer housing to the poor.
eighth : create bridge jobs at the city / state level
      ninth: increase low income housing.

the love and acceptance towards drug use in the homeless community hasnt worked, if you have the choice of getting treatment or doing drugs, your going to do drugs until you hit your rock bottom, which for most people, is the legal consequences of jail
