    I probably will choose Sempron 145 as a CPU for this build since its single core. Great video.

      I plan to investigate this platform in the future and with regular Athlon/Sempron cpus. The Phenom was phenomenal as it went to a Pentium2 level. I think it was the first AMD I investigated in a long time that was able to go so low so there's a lot of flexibility in there but I'm wondering if there isn't a cheaper alternative to build this kind of versatility and my eyes are on the Athlon/Sempron :)

    If I can give you a tip, as I move GPUs and soundcards. What I do is install 98se, chipsets, USB drivers, direct x. Pull the drive and clone it with another PC (I use AOMEI), then when I switch GPUs or sound cards I just restore the backup and install the right drivers. I even have a backup that's all the games I want installed already installed. Works great for me

      Yes, I used at some point Clonezilla(but not in this clip) but somehow I feel that making an unattended installer for windows is quicker and requires less input from me. Although I would have loved to return to this configuration for exploring the low frequency performance (I loved the scalability of this CPU) but it was done more for show...to see how far we can push the hardware and still have driver support for windows 98. I have another clip ideea because Asrock released an Intel motherboard as well and I can use a very powerful Core2 Quad. This would not make my immediate list as I'm a big fan of period correct PCs and like to experience PCs as they were in their days but if popular demand requires it :) I will bump the priority on that "Ultimate 98 build".

    Great video! My ultimative Windows 98 SE Pc has a Core2Duo E8400 3 GHz with 256 MB Geforce 7900 Gt PCIe with 2 SLI 3dfx Voodoo 2 cards. These are both connected with an external PCI to PCIe bridge. If you fixed some minor problems after the installation, the system runs quite well. All you have to do is use Windows 98 compatible hardware. HD audio for example doesn't work.

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting setup. SLI V2s, ...don't they get really hot? What is the motherboard used? Do you have a modded driver for the Geforce 7900 Gt? In a month's time I plan on doing a similar clip, this time with the equivalent for intel and a QX9650 C2Q CPU but only as a showcase of what is the latest hardware that officially supports windows 98.

      @@retrodrive-thru47 I use the GA-G31M-S2L motherboard for this. Very simple and cheap 775 motherboard. It also worked with the GA-P35-DS3 (rev. 1.0), there even all SATA ports under 98 worked (but not in AHCI mode!). Experience has shown that 98 tends to cause trouble with several onboard IDE controllers.... But it worked there. The Voodoo 2 cards are connected in a double PCI board together in SLI mode to a PCI Express x1 slot and are powered via a SATA connector.
      Yes, I have drivers for Windows 98 SE that go up to the 8800 GTX/Ultra.
      By the way, please don't try SLI, it doesn't work under 98. That's why the 7950GX2 card doesn't work under Windows 98 either.
      For price/performance reasons, however, I opted for the 7900 GT.
      This card has more than enough power for 98 and is actually already total overkill...
      I would also like to point out that cards with more than 512 MB of video memory can become quite problematic under 98.
      I don't use a Core2Quad because it doesn't do anything under 98, except that the system needs more power and generates more waste heat. Windows 98 only uses a single core. So I use the 1333 FSB E8400 with 3 GHz... that's enough.
      Windows 98 does not know how to disable all Intel-specific features such as EIST, C1E, etc. May cause problems.
      I also use modded mainboard drivers that don't officially exist 😁
      One contact point for such drivers is, for example, simply enter "Creopard" in the search engine. But it's a German site. Or search at VOGONS there you will always find all sorts of unofficial drivers for Windows 98.

    Hmm, the chipset supports 16gb of ram??? would a ramdisk be a possibilty?

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Asrock websites also states that 16GB of ram is possible :) I wouldn't dare to use that much for 98 (or any other 32 bit OS, XP included) I guess ramdisk is possible, KernelEX allows for applications built for 2000/XP to run under 98/ME. I guess it's possible but I'm not sure it's very practical, what should the purpose for the ramdisk be?

    Doesn't Win98 have issues with hard drives above 120gig?

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that has to do with the motherboard more than the operating system. The motherboards released in 1998 had a limit at around 128Gb I think, but that wasn't a problem then as regular hard drives were 10G-20Gb tops. I think that this is a more modern problem as people tried to use bigger HDDs with older motherboards. But this ASRock is released in 2006 (i think) and this wasn't a problem there as regular hard drives in 2006 were somewhere around 320-640Gb(maybe more) and it fully supported those.

    420+ fps in Pod Racer, nice.
    I have a OEM hp mobo with the same CPU in it and nvidia 9100 onboard graphics, it was running windows 7, terribly. The case was standard atx so it got reused and this mobo was going to be junk, I wonder if it would be a decent 98 machine, nice video!

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  ปีที่แล้ว

      The CPU is excellent. It can go as low as 140Mhz ( and now I'm truly sorry that I didn't benchmarked it at that frequency. I never used AM2 and working on this clip (and a few others) it came as a revelation. These CPUs (I also used an X2 5600+) can be used for anything from 98 to Windows 7 (and more). I'm not sure about the motherboard, the extension slots, bios options for underclock etc...but actually you can make a more than decent windows 98 PC with an AM2 as long as you keep to supported hardware. Maybe get an Sound Blaster Live (or a ESS Solo) and either a PCI graphics card(even old old ones work, like cards from the late '90s) or even a PCIex but don't go above the 6000 series for nvidia ( or 7000 if you want to mod the driver) or the X850 for the ATI( but I can't recommend it as I had issues) and you have a great windows 98PC. The downside to it is that you can only use 1 core for the CPU. But remember the motherboard/CPU is not as important as long as you have a supported graphics card, sound card and 512Mb ram. (if you are into modding you can go with more ram but you will need Robert Loew's patches, modded drivers for the graphics but still a supported soundcard)

    certainly an odd use for that board. I have one I paired with a phenom x4 980 and ati 4670 for windows xp, though it does not work right with that cpu hah. I may have to get a 965 since it seems to overclock well with those

      How does it not work well? I was planning to upgrade to a 980.. But I guess I can put it on hold for now. I did get a second 965, and I can assure you that the 955 overclocks just as well.

      @@retrodrive-thru47 I made a post on the one thread on vogons about this board, but in short, I couldn't overclock it at all or windows xp stopped loading, I also couldn't run a slower HT bus speed or do anything really and there was a lot of weird issues with running 533mhz ram. It was also difficult to even get it to post if the cmos gets reset.
      it is possible thinking about it that maybe the cpu I got is damaged, but im not sure since the motherboard officially doesn't support the cpu also, and I don't want to get another one to try.
      If you have other uses for the 980, I wouldnt want to discourage you from getting it, but I'm not sure if I would pay the high price for putting one in just this board.

    yes, it is true, it is a fairly decent motherboard, but taking into account for such a build, the type of construction in which the motherboard will be mounted, or better said, in which type of case it will be mounted, must be taken into consideration
    but it also depends a lot on the person who wants to opt for the custom-made case for windows 98, I would recommend installing 80 mm or 120 mm cooling fans, this depends on the preferences of everyone, what type of fan they want to install
    but remember, I would recommend very good fans to ensure good cooling of the entire operating system or, as the case may be, the construction of the PC

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, good cooling is always important. In this case I'm using one of the best radiators at that time, the Thermalright Ultra but it was my impression that the CPU didn't get that hot, even when pushed passed 4Ghz. Again, this would be a good be a good candidate for the ultimate windows 98 but other than that, maybe not the ideal windows 98 machine at all. I will come out with another clip and a more balanced system around the Albatron 4200Ti featured here that I consider to be the ultimate windows 98 graphics card.

    I thought that Win98 supported a maximum of 1GB or ram 😮

    • @retrodrive-thru47
      @retrodrive-thru47  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are safer with just 512Mb. It looks like some of the later updates made it possible for Win98 to support more(or it was backward engineered from Windows ME, not sure). Since I included it in the clip, you can replicate the settings so you can use more ram ~1100Mb. I think there are different settings that people use to get even more ram available to Win98 but I've heard that it may become unstable. Still, don't take this one for granted, Windows98 was never meant for QuadCore CPUs and more than 1Gb Ram, I created this clip only to highlight the newest hardware that officially supports Win98, I only plan to do one more clip with a QuadCore Intel cpu that also officially supports Windows98 and after that everything Win98 related will be on a Pentium2 or 3(or AMD equivalent) as it should be.
