Home assistant hoooooome assistant. Honestly couldn't resist that one. I don't understand even meta AI won't let you give the AI a permanent custom name you can do it temporarily but the AI won't remember it more than a few minutes when it comes to meta. There's no actual big magic about it the technology has been around for years to give them a custom name they just won't implement it in their own damn software. Where are your trackie you can get away with renaming your computer. Honestly would have rather have been able to call mine Cortana as an example or Demona if you want to be extra cheeky. I've got one in part of the part of the house that runs on Ziggy and the other one is Alexa. Third one I haven't got hooked up. Ironically the one I'm running upstairs is a model 1 or model 2 that somebody threw out nothing wrong with it. Originally plugged it into try it and just never bothered unplugging it. @@paulhibbert it's been my pleasure to get it put together! FYI, if you set up the lcars.js file, it will get rid of that pesky vertical black border on the sidebar.

This video was awesome! I'm just getting started with home assistant and to be honest this was way over my technological head, but I learned a lot watching it, and while I don't think I'll be adopting a TNG theme from my dashboard, understanding how it's composed was extremely valuable. Enjoy your videos, Paul. I've been using the LCARS package for a while now. A couple of tips: I also used the kiosk_mode frontend integration (HACS) to hide both the top and side menu bars because I only want my controls to display, not HA's menus taking up valuable screen space. Also use the custom button-card integration for some of my buttons that I don't want icons on. I look forward to trying out the big slider card! Thanks.

An LCARS dashboard: Truly amazing in a thoroughly geeky way that I've come to expect. (One wonders, what the combined effect of being a Trekkie and a Home Assistant aficionado is. I would hesitate to speculate, but it probably has something to do with combining the Riker Maneuver and hip thrusts.) Home Assistant is a Tamagotchi pet and can't wait to die": Well, once you get it working it usually stays that way until you try to do something really different like trying to make an LCARS UI. :) For those of you are looking at all this and saying, "It's too hard. Why would anyone want to do all that, just to get [fill in the blank]," this is one of the things about Home Assistant: It has the capacity to do almost anything you want, but sometimes it takes a bit of work to make it happen. ("Phenomenal cosmic power, steep learning curve.") For instance, I've got a "Garden spigot" icon on my dashboard that, if you just click it, it will toggle off and on the garden hose bib. But I've also got a routine that automatically shuts off the water after 2 hours. However, if you press and hold on the icon, you can switch on an off this automatic shutdown for those rare cases where you want to drown all the plants. There's even a little indicator that shows whether automatic shut-off is engaged or not. Home Assistant can do that, but it did take me a while to get it working as I wanted. One caveat on using ChatGPT: Sometimes people have given the wrong advice or recommend code that has some things in it that just don't work and ChatGPT doesn't know any better. It's still a good way to get past a stuck-point. Just remember, you might have to fix that code.

Another brilliant video 👍. I've been running the LCARS theme in my dashboards for a while now and after trying most of the themes have settled on the Lower Decks 1 theme. Only thing I can't get working is the sounds 🤷♂️.
With so much tech, wonder what Internet service Paul uses! Would be good to get a recommendation before dipping one's toe into the world of home automation!
In fairness, as soon as you begin dealing with anything from HACS, it's very solidly in the camp of "this is all made by volunteers/hobbyists and shared with no guarantee of official support." card-mod in particular is a power user tool that hijacks existing cards to tweak their behavior. It makes sense that the user experience isn't nearly as polished as the stuff included in HA by default.
You are both 100% right. I wish home assistant had more dashboard options, and I don’t want to do down anything the guys behind the LCARS theme have done because it’s ace. That initial colour scheme is pretty random though 😂

Why migrate? Add HA to your systems, and link them to Hiubitat, you get the best of both worlds. I have two Hubitats, and link them both to HA as HA is my go-to Dash 👍👍
First of all, I love your videos. Thank you for this. However, I have issues with LCARS: when I refresh the page with HA, the header turns into a regular barrel header, the shape basically disappears and the only way to get it back is to restart HA. Have you ever had this issue? Same on my iPhone - if I "pull" the screen to refresh, the design of the elements breaks. The same with fonts, it turns back to default font and I have to go to resources, edit that resource with fonts, update it and it goes back the StarTrek font. Very annoying... Do you know why am I having these issues? Thank you in advance!
Great information Paul . May be you can a video where you can utilise old phones as smart display per room. Ie kitchen , living room can just have a old smart phone attached to a wall and only shows devices in that particular room. Now a day can buy cheap second hand phone and tablets. Also lots of people have old phones which are good enough as display.
Great Video, easy to follow and setup. Everything works until the customization, maybe it is because my HA is the latest Version. During the custom code insert I receive the same Error messages from the HA but the preview works, some how, like yours. Unfortunately if I press Save everything went down and Ignors almost everything Form, Theme and even color.... Maybe I've just to wait a few more Solar cycles and everything will be fixed for me by some otherworldly external intelligence ;-)
Ironically you’re probably right about he it will magically fix itself. I’ve heard the very latest version of home assistant introduced a bug with card-mod and the lcars theme, this sounds like it! If you browse through some of the most recent comments on the video I think one lad found a workaround whilst he’s waiting for the bug to be fixed
@paulhibbert is there a reason on your walk through you don't suggest to use the developer tools to check the config files prior to the reboot to implement them and instead go via the settings?
All the pending updates make me sooo anxious. EDIT: How old is your HA version Paul? HA added copy and paste for cards months ago, so you don't need to copy paste the code.
Good to know! It was only actually updated a couple weeks ago, but I’m actually nervous to update it again now as another commenter has said the latest home assistant breaks card mod for this theme!! 😫
@@paulhibbert ah that's fair. I have an HA backup add on that creates a backup before every update. But rolling back when the interface breaks is non trivial
Ah the Lovelace-card, make sure you insert it as far as it will go for a satisfactory fit. And make sure you put it in the right slot, it's not the traditional one. I'll get my coat.
Here you go dude! www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwi_64Khto2IAxUIqGgJHWjAB4EYABATGgJ3Zg&co=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwiaa2BhAiEiwAQBgyHiJPX_ISEATUIMIjhofvzrZcbo6xVcgKhLrSMlq9hX_3PtzcpluohxoC7jgQAvD_BwE&sig=AOD64_0eIEgVNSlRhN1hFpS45XGuhjD66g&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwi25P2gto2IAxXn9wIHHZmeOBEQwg8oAHoECAYQDA&adurl=
There's got to be a better way to implement new dashboards. The switching between GUI and edit in YAML (or raw editor) still seems very non-user friendly. I'd actually sometimes prefer a raw editor type screen, but only for specific cards I'm working on (this would be a nice option rather than scrolling through a huge file). Also, there should be a simple way to convert existing dashboards to "mobile friendly" versions. Theme use with multiple options rather than all or nothing would be another nice feature.
You could create a second dashboard just for the tablet and the nice thing with themes is you can apply the them to just the tablet if you wanted too 🙂
It’s just copy and paste, I would seriously give it a go only now might not be the best time as I’ve heard the latest version of HA doesn’t like some of the code. I would wait a few weeks for them to iron that out
@@paulhibbertThank you, I appreciate the time and effort you put into this, even though this is a niche subject and this will probably not be your most watched video.
Thanks dude, you’re probably right. Hopefully it will do better over time, a lot of the home assistant tutorials start out weak and then do better later on 😊

HACS just released an update to 2.0.0 so your installation process for HACS repositories has changed some. Bad timing! 😊
Amazing - thank you!
You’re welcome dude 😊
Ah the Lovelace-card, make sure you insert it as far as it will go for a satisfactory fit. And make sure you put it in the right slot, it's not the traditional one. I'll get my coat.
Hey Paul, great vid ! I cannot see the url for the fonts ?
🙃
Here you go dude… fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Antonio:wght@400;700&display=swap
Hi Paul, do you please have a link to the light strips that you have near the ceiling in your ready room? Thank you 😊

@@paulhibbert Cheers Paul, I have ordered it now. Just hope I only need the one set LOL😂
Well now I need to install that...
This would be nice if you could do it only on a specific dashboard. Like the one you have for a tablet.
You could create a second dashboard just for the tablet and the nice thing with themes is you can apply the them to just the tablet if you wanted too 🙂
Cool 😎
Happy Hibbertday 😁
And to you my friend
How did you fix it so it doesn't suck
What tablet do you use?
Morning Dude! You don't check the config is ok before rebooting? Developer settings would streamline the reboot a bit too.
Thanks man, yes I should have included that! 😬
@@paulhibbert it happens. I loved the vid and will try it out on my living room's tablet.
Let me know how you get on! I’m in love with it
Cool!
Spelt Manoeuvres wrong - just saying 🙂
This is how we spell it in the future
I lost my energy dashboard after restore. How can I add it back?
Any toddler animations yet?
As a life long Trek fan I'd love to have this in the house. But I don't think I could get past the spousal approval factor.
Just by the thumbnail, I was like shut up and take my money..... but then Yaml, I can't go down the rabbit hole of Home Assistant
It’s just copy and paste, I would seriously give it a go only now might not be the best time as I’ve heard the latest version of HA doesn’t like some of the code. I would wait a few weeks for them to iron that out
think you forgot the hacs link around 1:00 which you edited an arrow in the video for
There’s no link around the 1 minute mark 🤔

Argh! Thank you so much. I seem to have totally ballsed up this weeks admin! 🤣
3rd assumption: You’ve seen Next Generation enough to get all the in-jokes. 😉🤓
Nice to see some Home Assistant content :)
I do like to put out a tutorial now and then and one of my sponsors has delayed their video. Seemed like a perfect opportunity 😁
@@paulhibbertThank you, I appreciate the time and effort you put into this, even though this is a niche subject and this will probably not be your most watched video.
Thanks dude, you’re probably right. Hopefully it will do better over time, a lot of the home assistant tutorials start out weak and then do better later on 😊
a little weird to see you've weather charts in the spaceship Enterprise. Let's hope it's not raining in the control room, could get messy.
Currently orbiting above an m class planet 😉
19:08 was a missed opportunity for a certain recurring joke… 😂
