This is the second time I've seen Brits "reacting" to this video and both times I was surprised because the two agencies are pretty much equivalent to Britain's MI5 and MI6.

The FBI has a mostly law enforcement focus, though they also have counter-intelligence functions. The latter entails detecting foreign intelligence agents within the US and catching "moles"/intelligence leaks. In the UK, MI-5 has that function.
The CIA is a foreign intelligence service like the UK's MI-6. Most CIA employees are analysts and support personnel; only a fraction of them work in the field as intelligence officers. Fewer still are part of its covert action/paramilitary group (Special Activities Center).

Agree. The FBI usually is involved if a crime crosses state lines. CIA is primarly overseas.

I grew up in (and still live in) the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. When I was a school safety patrol, in elementary school, we got to take an invited tour of the J. Edgar Hoover FBI building in DC.
Of course we only got to see what, we as civilians, were allowed to see. I remember they had a huge display of confiscated stuff they got from arrests over the years. Like guns disguised as every day things like canes or lips stick. They also had the death mask (or a replica of) Scarface.....I think it was Scarface.
But, yeah, everyone here knows where FBI HQ is. It is in the middle of a busy section DC next to other buildings.
There has been a lot of talk about moving it to Maryland or Virginia in recent years.

Apples and oranges. The FBI is internal, while the CIA is external.
Much like MI-5, VERSUS MI-6 in Britain.
So this isn't a fair comparison.

Our United States has a large number of other intelligence agencies that use covert agents. Including the Defense Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI), Office of Naval Intelligence, among many others with the newest one setup six months ago, the National Space Intelligence Center (NSIC)

An interesting footnote about the alphabet agencies, they all have their own special way of communicating with each other within their perspective agency. Which sometimes gets confusing when agencies have to work together.

Here's something that needs to be corrected. We call them "case officers" at CIA, not agents. An agent is an asset, usually not American, and is someone working for us in the area of operations. I don't work there, I just live in DC and have lots of govvie friends.

So, I started college/University in August, 2001, so 9/11 was a significant influence on my college experience. Years into that experience, I took a sociology class, and the professor had started her previous job, with the Justice Department, on September 10, 2001. As you can imagine, that was quite an experience/nightmare starting the very next day. The biggest thing I remember her telling us was how much 9/11 changed the law enforcement landscape, the most significant being that BEFORE that day, it was illegal for the various organizations to share intelligence and information. Yes, you read that right. She didn't even know this until that day, because she went to her direct supervisors and said she thought she/they should contact the other organizations, like the CIA and NSA, to collect/share intel, at which point her supervisors told her that she could not do that because it wasn't legal. Soon after, of course, that was changed. So, it wasn't a matter of stingy organizations competing, it was that they literally couldn't.

  • @LeslieLanagan

You hit the nail on the head before the video even started. FBI participates in law enforcement. They have a different standard in terms of collecting evidence, that it must be beyond a reasonable doubt to hold up in court. CIA works on probabilities, and all information collected goes to Congress.

For those of us who have been around a long time and who are steeped in history, we recognize that both departments have done wonderful things and both have done some very despicable things, most with the full help of the party in the White House which now makes people not believe some of the things that both protest to not be doing. The stories - the little that can be brought out would be comparable almost to what a country like Russia or North Korea would do. And this is just what we know about.

  • @yugioht42

NCIS, JAG, and the Air Force special service all pretty much do the same thing just more geared towards investigations in the military. Most agents tend to want to be a major crimes field agent because it’s where action is. But depending on what you want the paperwork department is also there. Unfortunately only the director or their specific team can go into the so Called war room which is a center of operations for various need to know operations anywhere in the world. You literally have to have the security clearance to even stand there. The fbi is more the action now ask later type people while the CIA is more think first before passing it along.
The credentials for NCIS, JAG, and Air Force special service are basically the same. If you have a background in law enforcement it’s a major plus but also a degree in computer engineering or tech. You must go through monthly physical training and be certified to shoot a variety of guns. The criminal investigation degree will help tremendously as you must gather evidence. Unfortunately you will see things that are just horrible. Unfortunately you may not speak of a lot of the work though as much is classified although past cases are ok.
