      His waifu, his backup waifu, his best friend, his best enemies, he basically lost everything. I wish they had decided to make a third season that really concluded Hei's redemption story where he goes beyond recovering from alcoholism

    WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE HEI'S DRINKING PHASE???? Dude lost everything, and his whole despondent attitude made it all the more heartwarming to see him pull himself back together. Train food all the way.

      zygo0 i personally like it when Hei's in his drinking phase, maybe it was him slapping the shit out of suo, who i hated until i actually watched here rifle rip through cement, and even then, i still didn't like her much.

      apparently an OVA explains his behaviour, but after hearin abotut his all I coudl think was "everyone he actually cared about and was clsoe to DIED, OF COURSE he's gonna become an alcholoic guy who doesn't give a shit anymore!"

      That Hei became an alcoholic is not a problem. It is actually a good idea. What is not a good idea is to leave Hei is this condition during most of the season. That's boring.

      I liked it. I thought it was pretty interesting. I mean all I kept thinking during season 1 was "Man...he is just going to break if he loses just one more person." which he did...because it makes sense for him to given the circumstances. I mean shit if any of the fans had to deal with the shit he did, my money is on that they would turn to drink or even drugs a lot faster than he did.

    I think you're missing the point with hei's character, he's supposed to be cold and calculating, he's pretending to be a contractor, and pulling it off damn well. He's lost pretty much everyone he counted as a friend or loved, and people are continually trying to kill him/capture his last friend/maybe love intrest, yin, so he's not going to be showing too much emotion most of the time. He's an assassin.
    His demeanor changed with suoh (if that's how you spell it) because he's just not used to interacting with children.
    Also, I find it weird that everyone seems to hate season 2, I like season one, ova, and season 2 equally.

  • @dhgascon
    @dhgascon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    One of the big things about the first season was the question of dolls having feelings or not and Yin seemed to show that there was something there. I would have rather seen a sequel where Yin progressed from doll to contractor. I also wish they dove more into the gate mythology instead of CLONING THE ENTIRE PLANET.

      The OVAs kinda explain most of the stuff season 2 skips over, like why Hei goes drunk emo, and what the deal was with Yin. Overall though, it's just a different feel than season 1. I like both separately or together with the OVAs. The OVAs just bring that bit of understanding to it that make the transition feel more natural. That said, I understand how people can feel like the kid is annoying and learning everything you solved kinda on your own through season 1 can just be kinda irritating, but I tend to think about what the character is learning and try to watch from their perspective, so it never bugged me. Same reason I wasn't upset about Hei not being the focal character cause he never really was until the very end of the first season. He was just the axis that the series followed along to get to the next semi-episodic protagonist.

  • @Elfandspartan
    @Elfandspartan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +83

    I'm afraid I'm gonna have to be one of those Darker than Black fans who disagrees with you, though I don't hate Suo as the lead or them putting Hei in the mentor role. Thing is I missed the grimdark mood of the original, was annoyed at Hei becoming a child abusing drunkard, and thought the power they gave Suo was stupid. But the things I really can't stand are Yin's role in the story and their attempts at including more Sci-Fi elements into the story, which not only ruined Darker than Black's original modern day noir feel but also looked like it was taken from the fucking Jetsens cartoon show!
    That said there were elements of this season I did legit like, they just couldn't save it for me. Seriously, what was with the skin tight Flash Gordon outfit?

    • @ManlyTear
      @ManlyTear 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Can't say I share your sentiments on Yin & the Sci-Fi elements & at how Hei became because after watching the OVAs, it was understandable why he became like that - it humanized him more than S1 ever did. BUT I do agree big time on Suo's power. I rolled my eyes whenever she pulled that gun out. It was like a magical girl transformation and she was the only contractor who did it. Hell, I don't want that shit in my DtB :P

    • @DiceWarwick
      @DiceWarwick 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MgMaster It would have been better if Suo got Hei's power, as it was established that Hei was not actually a contractor in the first place, and his sisters power kind of just hoped to him.

    • @THExWASP
      @THExWASP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it always had sci fi elements in it >.>
      also hei is human, he lost everything and became that way
      unlike other contractors hei never lost his emotions

    • @Adrasteia__
      @Adrasteia__ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Elfandspartan hm I seriously did hate Suo as the lead. For me she simply felt out of place. It's been years since I watched this show, but all I can think about, in retrospective with her character, is that she was somehow a weird moe blobb magic girl. And I neither like moe thingys nor magic girls. But even without her, it wouldn't have saved the show for me. So no harm done - I guess :) (sorry for any mistakes - not a native speaker)

    • @MaxRavenclaw
      @MaxRavenclaw 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Contractor behavior is strange as shit. The authors never made up their minds if they're emotionless or not. And the ending is shit.

      @kelevra5240 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes and the legacy feel of something that happened years ago repeating and ghosts from the past reappearing only to die at the end i.e. amber. and having everyone reappear at the end just drove the nail home

    • @und3c1ph3r3d
      @und3c1ph3r3d 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kelevra5240 Agreed, I thought it hit pretty strongly. I just finished it the first time myself so it's fresh on my mind; yeah, it was episodic, but I felt everything tied together really nicely and led to what I felt was a strong finale that left a good bit of room open for a sequel to tie things up. So far, not really liking s2, so I'm hoping when I get to Gaiden it'll bring things back for me. S1 was fantastic though.

  • @shotgundam0098
    @shotgundam0098 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    S2 gave me a really weird hate/love relationship. I wasn't too into it the first watch but after that I really enjoyed it. One major issue I had with S2 was it gave us a lot more questions than answers (Really hoping for a S3). I suspect many people might feel the same. Also I prefer Mao as a cat.

  • @AwesomeDeBawesome
    @AwesomeDeBawesome 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I highly recommend that everyone watches the OVA's before watching season 2. They are four great episodes that develop the relationship between Hei and Jin further, which is highly important for season 2.
    As for Hei's change of character: I absolutely loved it. It takes balls to take a well-established (and loved) character and change him is such a significant way. It was quite well executed as well. It also fitted his current situation very well (won't spoil season 1). After season 1, I thought the main fans of Hei would be teen guys who'd think he's totally 'cool and badass' to show no emotion and still get the ladies, and that nagged me. I'm not saying everyone WAS like that when S1 aired, but I'm saying I got the vibe from his character.
    Small spoilers for season 2:
    They could've ended it so nicely!!!! And 1 or 2 OVA's would've cleared up some of the open ends left. But no, it had to end in a sequel hook. Fuck that.
    And the resurrection part was a total cop-out. Did not work with the rest of the darker tone of the show at all.

    i just watched the whole seasons and ova's.
    And to all the poeple who are thinking of watching, start with season 1, then ova's then season 2.
    Very important plots happened in season 1, then you will need to watch the ova's to understand the situation between what happened after season 1 and before season 2.
    If you don't, them i m afraid you'll be not understanding a thing (because its already very hard to understand the plots even in actual order).
    Really good series, hope for a season 3 even tho it has been 7 years since release.

      I'm also hoping season 3! I want Hei and Yin get out from the Gate. I think season 3 will be incredible. They can just make they didn't age, it's ok because they are inside Gate. When they out, it's also can make some or many years later without old character.

    • @edvinisteinidiot
      @edvinisteinidiot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd hope for a thrid season aswell but I dont think its going to happen any times soon. Darker than black is like an open book that never closes, it was a mystery from the beginn and it ended whilst the book is still not done yet. The only thing darker than black was there for ( well at leasr in season1) to relate to those different type of characters, where they grew up, how they are going to life their lives and their personality. And Season 2 open up with a bomb, a new character her whoe family get murdered ( supposivly) hei pops in, she has a goal she must reach and she befreinds hei and it goes on and on and on. But at the end of the 2 Season it ended wit ha open book again, Hei got what he wanted ( to elimate Izanami and live forever with yin in the gate), it still isn't cleared were the first gate came from and what purpose it had it only was there. So we were just bassicly following a character path (Hei's path) and we learn to relate to him. So maybe there will be a thrid season but the sales weren't high enough to mkae it worth to mkae a third season.

    I definitely understood the plot of Season 1 and it's in fact very coherent, clear in its beginning, middle and end. Season 2, however, maybe I'm still trying to wrap my head around the plot, because it definitely presents a clear overarching plot, but the beginning, middle, and end seem ironically more disjointed (thus INCOHERENT) than a fucking episodic series. What was the moral or theme of Suou? Child embarks on a bewildering journey in gate/contractor world and then ultimately dies in every sense that matters without understanding anything? I don't understand how that can be considered better than S1. Meanwhile, the protagonist of S1 ends up just how he was at the end of S1, albeit with a questionable (nonetheless correct-ish) choice that destroys much of his character development from S1. The fight scenes are "better" because the powers were more absurd: golem armor transformation, bug summoning (where did all these bugs come from, why are they just one type of bug), gun summoning, light saber embuing; these powers are not as conservative as the first season powers were, which was a bit irksome. Plot was more forcefully introduced, which requires a much lower disbelief threshold than was established in Season 1.
    I could forgive all of that, and I admit get around to enjoying the story half way through from the bumpy start, but the ending just stirred the wrong sort of questions as to the competence of the season on a whole.

      JTBPlays DE well I've found it entertaining so far, the main character seems to be getting darker in a bad kinda way, Izaya the puppetmaster of the entire series that has been controlling the entire series from the beginning has just been stabbed and outclassed, which surprised the fuck outta me.

      leobardo valdobinos I suppose. I personally just have some major complaints about the pacing as well as the excessive amount of new, undeveloped characters that were introduced in the second season... Also, for what it's worth, the production values have decreased drastically.

    When I found Darker than Black, I accidentally watched the season 2 first and finished it xD And in a weird way I didn't find myself questioning the second series for having a lack explanation.
    I did got super confused at the beginning but in the middle of the series I understood what was going on.
    Personally I think the second season is a good stand alone series in my opinion.

    IMO the OVAs were by far the best part of Darker than Black. Focused on my two favorite characters (Hei and Yin) with all the atmosphere and cool factor of the first season but minus the boring episodic subplots. Overall I have to agree with this review; in spite of the first season having more style and atmosphere, the second season was just a lot more entertaining narratively, especially because Suou was a very likeable character and the plot had more of a sense of direction. Either way though I just wish they made the entire series like the OVAs but stretched out for 36 episodes instead of what we got, because it took all the best elements from both seasons while ditching the cons.

    BK201 was this dark, formidable, ominous character in season 1 that seemed to attract many females and had many great fight scenes backed by beautiful music, how could you not appreciate this character? Season 2 he changes into a drunk, hippy like 'pedophile' with less action scenes as more are given to Suou, a not so interesting lead who lacks many formidable characteristics Hei possessed in season 1. This show, in my opinion, did at least one thing right in season 1, the action. When you changed it all in season 2 and gave the story more depth it shocked many viewers including myself at the time, although after re-watching it I learned to appreciate it more.

      MrChelseaDan I was huge fan of season 1, and I watched season 2 just because I was hoping I will see something like season 1, but it never happened. Listed by importance:
      1. Amber. I absolutely loved her. One of the coolest characters ever. She was not in season 2.
      2. There were many characters I could relate to from time to time (Hei, November 11, Havoc, etc). Not a single one in second season.
      3. There was no really deep stuff in season 2. Like for example, Hei still wanting to see and imagining real sky, feeling that he lost part of him with that sky.
      4. Fights were much more cool. Sniper is one of the most boring abilities I can think of.
      5. That guy dressing like woman ruined my mood every time it appeared on show.
      6. Hei was awesome and they turned him into loser.
      7. Guy that was liking Suo was total creep and unimportant to the plot.

    • @loganfreeborn9778
      @loganfreeborn9778 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +MrChelseaDan I think my biggest problem was that I didn't see all the little things I saw in the original series. At the end of every episode there was always just a small gesture that showed that contractors could feel emotion. From Hei saying that Yin was his partner to November Elevens partner joking around with him and Yin hanging out with the normal teenagers, the little things were what really sold the show for me.
      I didn't get that with season two, I haven't finished it because I can't find anywhere to stream it, but as far as I've gotten there just doesn't seem to be the little moments, and for me the little moments are what make a show.

    • @loganfreeborn9778
      @loganfreeborn9778 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Logan Freeborn Plus all the little moments made the final episode really just amazing, when he stands among all the contractors from all the episodes, that shit just hit my feels and it wouldn't of been half as good without the bits of build-up.

    I personally have a soft spot for Gemini of the Meteor (for the same reasons you so wonderfully articulated). Even Hei's awful attitude made sense after watching the OVAs, and taking his own history as a soldier/killer into account, it suggested an intimate history with violence and an understanding that even children, when Contractors, are enemies to eliminate or assets to mold according to the harshness of the espionage realm.
    Babbling aside, great review! Hope you'll get around to doing Blood Plus one of these days: it has a sort of "thing" that should be right up your alley: complex overarching plot, original twist on cliches like vampires/twins/amnesia, nice character development, and a soundtrack by none other than Hanz Zimmer!

    To be honest, the only things that made me endure this show where Hei's split personality and the action sequences.
    Overall, the story was incredibly confusing and in the end was never completely clear. They never explained how or why things happened. Why did the Hell and Heaven Gates appear? Why did Yin awaken? How does Hei's sister grant him electric control?
    I guess I watched it without paying too much attention, I really think the whole story was a confusing clusterfuck

    Well, what I liked about Hei in season 1 is that there was a sort of ambiguity as to which "side" of him was the real him, and which one was the mask he put on. Seeing him at his job in the various plots and then watching him outside of them and trying to gauge who he really was was one of the most interesting and subtle things about the original Darker than Black. What I didn't like about him in season 2 is that they just decided to toss this subtlety out the window and just turn him into a drunk mentor figure.

    Actually there is supposedly a part in between the two called Darker than Black Gaiden where explains what happened it would not be considered a second season if even canon because it is only 4 episodes long but it gives more of reason why Gemini of the meteor to exsist other than it can

    wonder if he plans to review parasyte and death parade.
    personally i loved both seasons of darker than black, because we got ti see the man who we thought basically couldn't lose, lose everything (powers included) and hit rock bottom (and suo's face). which he eventually rises up from and becomes who he used to be.

    This is technically season 3 with a middle darker than black being season 2. Only being a few episodes but it fills in the story.

    The magic of Arkada is that we can have 200% opposite opinions, but he is always so clear that it's only his humble opinion and never discredits people who think otherwise that I always like his reviews even if I don't always agree with him.
    Major props for that man! But I still liked S1 a lot more than S2 :P

    Apart from the vagueness of many of the events of this story, the main question is whether yin survived in the end or did hei kill her? Or were they connected or not?

    Looks to me you had A LOT of fun recording this review XD I gotta say though, I thought season 2 was overall entertaining, it's just that I thought it's ending was so "WTF?!" that I couldn't come to love it i think

    After hearing your comment on season pacing for certain shows arc I would highly recommend looking into the second season of psycho pass. Yes it is only 11 episodes long but for some reason at least in my mind the pacing in it is absolutely perfect I don't know why but it is. I highly recommend you look at it.

    when i first heard about darker than black, i glimpsed at the 2nd season's opening theme and thought it was incredible, how hei is old and suou is taken under his wing. so i started watching season one with that in mind, and i loved both seasons equally. guess it worked out in my favor

    GRArkada is a really good Anime Reviewer but sometimes his videos are too long even so he's still a very good Reviewer.

    I completely agree with this review in every way, but I would also like to also point out, that if you choose to watch both seasons, if you watch in english, you get badass Hei for both seasons and only have to put up with Suou through one season.

    I loved the first season of Darker than Black yet I would probably like this second season even more if not for one thing :the ending. Although I love to see Suou which is a very enjoyable character and the development of Hei which went back to his usual badassery from the pits of despair the ending was... Evangelionesque. Not in the sense that it ran out of budget, but it was a total mindfuck which didn't conclude anything. For someone whose motto is "The ending is paramount." I'm surprised Arcada didn't even mention that.

    If you can review Parasyte at some time in the future, that would be fucking amazing. I seriously enjoyed watching it, and it is available on Crunchyroll now for free streaming. It's 24 episodes long, and is insane, awesome, and still really interesting at the same time. Although some people did dislike some changes from the manga, but I wasn't bothered at all, and it should definitely not stop you from watching such an awesome anime, although, fair warning, the blood and gore within is anything but light.

    Great review Arkada!
    I think many of us here would like to hear your opinion on two amazing 2014 anime that recently ended. Those shows being of course Parasyte the maxim and Your lie in April. Could you possibly share your thoughts about them?

    As a guy who enjoyed season 1 and just never got around to watching this, I really want to now. I liked Hei, but I felt he was really unrelatable in the protagonist department. And the show's explanation for the whole 'stars and sky' thing was fucking ludicrous, so I could deal with a tone change.

    A review I'd love to see would be The Tatami Galaxy. I don't think you've done it - couldn't find it if it was on your channel. It's by far my favorite comedy anime.

    I am so glad someone else enjoyed the second season of Darker Than Black. I loved the second season more than the first season but a lot of people I know that watched both didn't like the second season at all. Nice review.~

    this anime was one of my childhood animes that I watched in the past.
    Damn it is so nostalgic! and also the anime that I don't want to watch anymore. Do you know how many times this anime has a re-run in ANIMAX!?? Oh how I wished it would end!!!
