  • Hello,
In this video, we have another MSI R9 390 graphics card that is having a issue but this time it's dealing with my Gaming Rig while we are playing games. Basically, when we are playing any video game, either it's Call of Duty, Forza, GTA etc, after about 1hr of gameplay Windows 10 operating system will lock up and go into a complete BLACK OUT. There is no response from my keyboard or mouse which forces me to do a hard reset.
Also, whenever I am watching TH-cam videos full screen, I get a "pre video card artifacts" which would usually clear up within accouple of seconds.
    😇😇😇
Let's bring this card back to life....
    Enjoy the video!

      Hello,
These cards are known to have issues due to GPU soldering and bad memory chips. I would highly recommend to apply the heat method to "reflow" the GPU and also replace ALL thermal pads.
      th-cam.com/video/RiFAM2yquB0/w-d-xo.html
Then add a 140mm fan under the video card which will help with keeping the video card cool. Afterwards, lower your computer resolution for your display and also game settings. Play around and see if that will help.
If that does not work then you should try downloading MSI After Burner software. Next, you should lower the "CORE CLOCK" and "MEMORY CLOCK" to the lowest setting. Play a game and see if the Black Screen goes away. Play around with the setting until you get it perfect but do not max the setting out as you could damage the card.
      Thanks

One thing to do is go into your display settings in Windows 10 and make sure your W10 resolution and the game resolution are the same. And if they are, just reset the settings on both. Worked for me.

You can always hire a professional to scan the video card motherboard to test the microchips including memory and GPU. It might be a shot depending on the cost and time.
Many times the R9 390 will overheat, replacing the termo paste tends to help if there are no hardware malfunctions.
Hopefully you'll get things sorted out.

    So the suggested solutions are:
    1. Roll back GPU Drivers
    2. Make sure Windows 10 and the game are set to your monitors resolution
in terms of any software faults.
And Hardware faults could be corrected with a fresh thermal paste application or could be a bad Display or HDMI cable.

I actually have sold my previous gpu. Turns out that one of capacitors from the board is busted and needs to be replaced that could cost me half the price of the gpu itself.
I’d suggest that you use the original cable from your PSU to GPU because that fixed mine. Even buying a new one, I’m still having the random no signal shit. So, ensure to check the cable especially if you’re using an extender.

    @flows6810 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

SOLVED!! Its the power connectors to the graphics card. I checked and found that they weren't properly seated. The connector plugs themselves are weird, The input is 8 pin (and there's two of them - 2X8) but the connector is a six pin and a separate 2 pin that have to be meshed together before plugging into the GTX 1080. I found that in my case the two plugs weren't properly meshed together and as a result the two pin portion of the plug was not fully plugged in to the card. Once I unplugged and re-plugged them properly I no longer had the problem.

I would change the thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU if it's around that time of the year to do so. Do a full enclosure clean out to remove any dust and then uninstall your graphics driver to a old version and play a game. Adjust your graphic settings from lower settings and play to see if the game crash. Then update your drivers to a new version and see if the crash comes back.
It's possible that your drivers might be causing a issue with the core/memory clock on the GPU. AMD MSI AfterBurner allows you to adjust the clock speeds, you can try lower and then work your way up to see if that help.

It started smoking and had this awful metallic burning smell so I quickly unplugged my pc and made sure there were no flames. I dissected the pc and smelled each part to figure out where the smoke came from. I ended up taking apart my gpu and it had a blown transistor which had melted some of the thermal padding around it. I retired the card which no longer works. Long story short, MAKE SURE YOUR PC HAS TONS OF AIRFLOW, DONT LET YOUR PC OVERHEAT, DONT OVERLOAD THE SYSTEM. otherwise you’ll get to have fun like i did with smelling each component figuring out where the fire came from

Edit :it worked for a bit, but I did something that definitely was the problem, I switch the gpu cables slot that were connected to the Drive. I think, the drive slot has more power so after swapping it gpu got enough power to run without issues.

Interesting. Where is the buzzing sound come from?
If coming from speakers, a failing graphics card can produce this sound. However, the first thing you would want to do is try a different video port and video cable and see if that may help.

We’ve tried so much and we have no idea what it could be. Do you possibly know what it could be, we are using the gpu that comes with the cpu. When we load into bios it also gets a black screen too

I would try replacing the thermo paste if you haven't done so. Many times the video card is overheating (thermal paste), bad GPU or bad memory.
If you feel that it would be worth spending $100-$300 (around that price) to have a business repair the board. I would suggest try finding a local company that repair computer and gaming motherboards.
Make sure you do some extensive research on the company first, check out their previous work and reviews to see how other customers felt about their issues and resolutions. You can run a search on Google/Google Maps for keywords "GPU Diagnostic Repair".
I pinned a comment of another TH-camr whom found out that their memory chips on the video card where bad, the company replaced them for between $70-$80. I cannot predict if your issue will be the same nor if you will pay the same price however, if you paid some money for your video card and feel it's worth putting money into it, then I would say go for it.
You can never regret "Trying" but you can regret "Not Trying". Ya dig!
      Hope you find a solution.

The issue that you are experiencing sounds like your graphics card is overheating.
When was the last time that you change the thermal paste on your card? If it has not been changed within a 2yrs then I would recommend that you change it. Even if the card was recently purchased, there has been some situations where manufacture would cut corners by putting cheap thermal paste on their GPU that will eventually cause these hardware issues.
Regardless, I would change the thermal paste as it is the cheaper solution than to keep overheating your card. Check out my video if you need help to performing this task.
      th-cam.com/video/RiFAM2yquB0/w-d-xo.html

Play a TH-cam video and crank TH-cam video quality to either 1080p or 4k. Play a video, maximize the video and then minimize the video. Does the video quality start to get glitchy? If so, try lowering Window's resolution from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050 or lower and see what happens. Then try to play the game and see what happens.

Try older version drivers,if it don't help then the main problem could be the PSU.I had PC crashes, black screens, stuggerings and I tested my PSU wattage on a site who said to me that I needed a bigger PSU than the one I had.Older drivers helped but not totally so I removed my 2 optical drives, reducing the wattage, and for now the PC is working really good especially the fans that were going slower before.
I know I am late but I hope I still helped,I was accusing my GPU and almost broke it when in reality the problem was probably the wattage. If it starts crashing and stuttering again then I probably need a new PSU or GPU.
You should do 3D benchmarks, they stress your GPU and PSU aswell so you can see how the PC handle the test.

    • @AWordFromMrJones

Robert, sir just based on the facts you stated black screen and flickering, I can tell you for fact that thermal paste is not properly dissipating the heat from the GPU. I highly recommend that you replace the thermal paste.
Also, how many fans do you have in your computer and which way are they pointed to? You can always upload a video on your TH-cam and show me the inside of your computer and I can tell you if the fans are pointed in the right direction.
      Thanks

What are your display settings in GTA V? Try turning your Texture setting to Normal and set every other display setting as Normal. Then see how the video card performs. If you notice it's still increasing demand for air, then I would replace the thermal paste on both CPU and GPU.
