Monitor randomly loses signal but computer stays on.

- In this video I show you how to potentially fix the issue where your monitor(s) lose signal.
I started to have this issue when I upgraded to a 3090 card, at first I thought I had a defective card and I would have to go through the RMA process. However, when I checked the Event Log for errors, there were errors that were pointing to the driver. So I started looking at those errors and found many people were have the same issue.
What I determined is that the issue is being caused by the Timeout Detection & Recovery (TDR) Windows process. In short if Windows does not detect a response from the GPU within a certain amount of time, Windows resets the GPU and for some of us this causes our monitors to lose signal. The default time is set to 2, you need to change that value to 10 or higher in the registry.
Create a restore point before making any changes to your registry.
1. Type “run” (without the quotes) in the Windows Search bar.
2. In the command box that opens type “regedit” (without the quotes)
3. With the registry editor open, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System|CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
4. On the right side of the screen (not the yellow folder side) look for an entry called TdrDelay
5. Double-click on it, select decimal and change the value to 10.
6. If the TdrKey key does not exist, add the key by right clicking on the right side of the screen, do not click on one of the entries.
7. Click New - DWORD (32bit Value)
8. In the field, name the key “TdrDelay” (without the quotes). If you hit enter before renaming it, simply right-click on the entry called "New Value #1" and select rename, name it “TdrDelay” (without the quotes).
9. Now double-click TdrDelay and select Decimal (hint - the selection is in the Base window on the right).
10. Under value, change it to 10 and hit ok. I set mine at 60 and I have not had any issues.
Reboot your system for the change to take effect.
If you update Windows and the issue comes back, you may need to repeat this process. - เกม
I have been working with a friend to fix a pc for probably a total of 6 hours. We have been researching, running diagnostics, and replacing hardware. I stumbled across this video, followed it, and have had no issues with my pc after 2 hours of running games. Incredible video.
My PC started doing this afew weeks ago and I lost my mind trying to fix it, this so far has been the only solution that has worked. Thank you so much dude!
Very good video, you actually explained everything very well, the cause, how to fix and all that. Also thanks for making a video transcript in the description. Oh, and your solution worked for me, so thanks again 😁
Thank you kindly. This perfectly and instantly solved the issue I was having with my new Lenovo ThinkCentre and the 82" LG display I'm using. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next problem you help solve for somebody. Mega thumbs up!!
Actual life saver bro. Usually tutorials never work for me and i usually have to find it out on my own. But this, honestly saved me so much time and hassle. I never usually thank people after their tutorials but i just had to thank you for this one. especially since you only have 88 subscribers.
You are the MAN! I can't believe I found your video immediately when searching TH-cam about this issue and it actually worked. You just saved me a lot of stress and time! Thank you so much for posting this!
Thanks Man, I recently got this pc and thought it had a faulty gpu and psu, if I hadn't stumbled upon this video while trying to find a fix for over 3 weeks idk what I'd have done
This video is one of the only ones that properly explains this and actually sheds light on this issue! My AMD 6700XT would randomly cause my monitor to lose signal at random times and I would have to force shut down my pc. This happens at least once every 2-3 days for me. So far doing this, I have had no issues for a week. I hope this is a permanent fix. Thank you sir for your work!

Issue free after a week?
@@FTGRC yup! So far so good. I tried other solutions before such as DDU, under-clocking, and reseating the ram and GPU, but none of them fixed the issue.

@@hugorezende199 I have this exact problem, it has been happening for a couple years. I have a 1660 super and I was wondering if you have found a solution?
@@ilovesocialstudies really, i think its a problematic rusted little component that is making the CPU looses power. What kind of solved was making a down grade on the MSI Afterburner a little. But it really depends sometimes it stays on all day and sometimes it turns off all of the sudden. Doing a cleaning on the board seems to help a little but did not solved entirelly
@@hugorezende199 Hey bro, I decided to replug everything to make sure that everything was plugged in. I then moved my graphics card down one pcie slot because I think that it was gathering too much heat from the CPU. I have set the delay to 10, as the video suggested, but this actually INCREASED the occurrences of this problem. I then set it to 100 and haven't had an issue since (for now, fingers crossed). Admittedly, my card is a older than the mentioned 3090 and I only recently startet to have this problem. My guess is, that my card is worn out and doesn't react fast enough anymore.

solved the issue thanks to your video, cheers!
Giving this a shot, thanks for the video. Also hot-tip for the "Might have to repeat the process" disclaimer, you can click the TdrDelay key, hit File, and hit Export. Run the file if you believe it was removed, saves some time. You can also make use of BATCH to check after an update so you can run the file. You can make it 10x more automated but I am too lazy, here's a quick pointer though!
REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers /V TdrDelay

I am having this issue now. I don't have that registry and didn't want to add it because I wasn't sure. Thanks for showing me how! My issues started in mid-December when NVidia had a driver update. Never had a problem before that, but it's been hell since. I don't want to spend money on a new card and still have the same issue. I had never heard of a TDR timeout issue but it makes sense. I've taken my PC apart twice already, cleaned everything and couldn't figure it out. I have the 2060 Super(which they don't make anymore)so I really need to be able to fix this.

@@Stridsvagn so far nothing has happened, but I’m going to try one of my heavier load games later and see what happens then. I play lost arc a lot and that’s the one that usually gives me the most issue. Same thing with Final Fantasy seven remake or the Sims four. Anything with a heavy graphic load. Thing is the card is not overheating. And the temperature is usually 35 or 36 Celsius CPU temperature is also normal. I honestly think it’s a corrupted driver issue. And if it’s the driver, wouldn’t Micro Center computers also have the updated drivers for everything in their tech area? Really wishing I could take this card somewhere and have it tested by someone who knows video cards to verify that the card is actually defective before I shell out money for a new one. Very frustrated that I spent a lot of money on this computer less than four years ago. Only to have this happen so soon after. I’m really feeling gypped and I will likely not buy any more prebuilt computers from anyone. I should’ve just built my own, which is what I will do it some point. Back in the early 2000s I was in IT tech-support and I used to build systems all the time. But these new cards and things I don’t really know much about because I changed fields in 2004 so I no longer do anything with hardware /software since.

This is my second amd gpu i buy in a week.i really wanted to give the rx 6700xt a chance instead of the overpriced 4060. After having this issue I was really close to returning it and going nvidia forever, glad I fixed it!
It's been a few days now after having done what you've shown in the video, and it seems to have done the trick. It would never black screen while playing games, but it would when browsing the internet. Chrome would just freeze up and boom no signal, only a hard reset would make my PC work again. I had a hard time finding a video, reddit thread, etc. that described my issue, but this did it. I hope others having this issue finds this video, and that it helps them as it did me. Thank you very much for your help 😊
EDIT: It doesn't seem to be fully fixed, might mess around and try with a value of 60 instead of 10. It does happen less often however, so still an improvement.
EDIT: It still wasn't completely fixed. So I did some more research and read it could potentially be a RAM issue. I tried both my RAM sticks individually and my PC works just fine with either one, but I decided to swap around the RAM sticks (ITX motherboard, so only have 2 RAM slots) and that seems to have done something. Monitor hasn't gone dark since. Did experience a complete system freeze the other day when playing CS2, but that's the only thing since the swap.

Can anyone explain why this setting actually helps, and what causes the GPU to crash? Because without the TdrDelay dword value, the PC seems to crash under load.
It's also very game dependant and mainly happens in games that are either "not optimized' or running vulkan/directx12 and are "heavily optimized for gpu acceleration".
Basically meaning, it's the games that use the most they can out of your GPU that will cause the Crash
So far this has happened to me in Ready or Not, Raft, CS2, And Arena Breakout Infinite. It definitely happens in other games too, but this is as far as i remember

Other than making sure you saved the entry after you created it, I’m not aware if there is something else you need to do. I have never had this happen to me after creating and/or changing a registry entry and saving the change made.

Any clue why my TdrDelay value instantly changes to "a" after i restart my pc? and base always goes back to Hexademical after i change it and press ok
What value did you set it to? I’m not that big of a tech guy, but from what I understand hex value “a” is equal to 10 in decimal.
same here
This happens to mine every 15-30 mins after turning on, I tried it and it worked for the day and it’s happening again, it also worked when I updated my bios to the latest and again after a day it started again
Bios updates use to bring more problems than solutions.
mine was already set to 60? Do i put it to 10 then?
hello when i try making a file named tdrdelay it says there is already a file with this name please help!
it didn't fix it for me, I dont know what to do next. Does anyone know something else I can try?
I have this issue. I've had my pc for over 4 years, worked fine and now like 3 days ago this started to happen more and more, now my monitors will black out after being on chrome for like 8 minutes. My specs are: 850W PSU, ASUS RTX 2070 Super, Intel i7 9700K, 16Gb ram, Asus rog strix Z390-F motherboard. I went into the BIOS yesterday and turned off all kinds of overclocking (it said i had Turbo mode on the CPU). I just tried this regedit thing but didn't work. Both monitors lost signal 5 minutes after. If anyone has any ideas, please help.
