Me realizing how young I was when these movies and songs released. In fact I grew up with "kabhi khushi kabhi gam " it was released the same year I was born and it's older than me.. :) :)

When she first started, she used to try and copy the style at the time, so she used quite a nasal affectation sometimes (you can hear it especially in the 1949 song here "Barsaat Mein").... I'd say mid/late 50s is when she drops that and starts singing with her full, real voice.
Everyone who started in the 40s used to sing nasally. That was the trend back then. It took many years for Lata, Rafi and Mukesh to break free of that and develop their own styles.
