John Farnham is an Australian icon, still an amazing voice even in his 70's now. Also an absolute gentleman. My fave song of his lead vocals on Little River Band's "Playing To Win", the live version from his 1990 tour is absolutely phenomenal.

Those two at 4:17 Lisa Edwards who is is lifetime backup singer, had her own career and incidentally is just as powerful of a singer as John, watching them sing 'Angels' and sync up perfectly in the big belts. And also the Legendary Venetta Fields who needs no introduction to most singers in the world. Her voice is immaculate and powerful and she is has only ever sung with the very best the entire world over.
It is interesting watching him hit those massive high power notes, while at the same time he is bending over to pick up flowers given to him from the crowd and is pacing the stage to hand them off to some attendant just out of the cameras view at the side of the stage then as he walks back to centre stage he hits that next belt as if it is nothing.
John Farnham its been reported he may never sing again. Diagnosed with cancer and just had surgery. Had part of his jaw partially reconstructed, which went well. Remembering him and this song, this song will always be meaningful to our nation and my gen....because he cared and we lived it powerfully and dynamically. no such thing, he had an okay voice that got some really suitable material on whispering jack, before that radio stations wouldnt play his music and no recording company were interested and all turned him down
He's got one of those voices where I'm never worried if he's going to mess up, lol. There's something super relaxing about that. Bryan Duncan is like that, too.
John Farnham (or Farnsy as he's commonly referred to) is an Australian icon. You're the Voice is almost another Aussie anthem, so much so, that Whispering Jack (the album this track was on) is the highest selling album in Australia by an Australian artist. It came out over 30 years ago and approx 2/3 of Australian households had a copy of the album. He's got a fantastic voice. Hope you get go check out more of him. It's such a shame he didn't receive more worldwide recognition. Happy weekend Rebecca.
Legend does not even come close to describing John Farnham. He is an Aussie icon and is still performing. I’ve seen him live over the years and he put on one hell of a show.
American singer/songwriter Richard Marx saw the video of the song on MTV one night & contacted his management to organise a meeting & he toured with John through the US & Europe including the UK. It was the only major Tour outside Australia & New Zealand John engaged in as he was & is a homebody & doesn't like to spend too much time away from his family.
Could you imagine after all John has been through lately that he came back and did a small tour??? I’d be there! #candream I was lucky enough to go to 3 of his concerts during his career. My older brothers were at this concert with the MSO. This was 1 of 13 consecutive concerts in Melbourne alone (it was a national record at the time). His hometown absolutely love him and he is my favourite male singer!!
"Ship! He just threw it!" Judging by that reaction I'm guessing you missed what he did immediately before that - which was to throw it spinning into the air and catch it again? One of his signature moves, along with spinning the mic and catching it, and dropping the stand to the ground and kicking it up to catch it.
probably also why you can see him at times tightening the stand - probably insuring it doesn't have the top half fly off during one of his moves. I'm guessing that it did at some live gig or another.
When I first saw the video for this performance, more than the power of John's voice (which is amazing), I was amazed by his trick with the mic stand. If you look closely Rebecca, you'll see that just before singing the chorus, he throws the mic stand up in the air and catches it in perfect timing. Showing off while belting it out! Amazing! =D
You found our Legend and at that concert he sang that song again as an encore and asked everyone to be careful going home. He always does. He turned 73 on July 1st. I heard him sing at 70 and he had lost none of that voice. He is known as the Voice. I don’t think he will perform again because he lost his best friend and manager that we all loved as well. To complications from Covid. John and Glenn are and were beautiful souls. John’s range is huge and he can sing in any genre, even Opera. He never had a singing lesson and he makes the Beatles sound sad when he sings Help at this concert.
He is a legend and we all adore him . Even now he is in his 70’s god I feel so old but even now he is still as powerful and has such beautiful energy you just have to love him xox
It's already been mentioned in previous comments, but John's live version of The Beatles song Help is an absolute masterpiece. I'd love to see what you think of it.
This song was written by, Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Maggie Ryder & Chris Thompson. The writers asked if John would like to sing their song. John, Glenn Wheatley (Manager) & Ross Fraser (Producer) all said a huge YES. To which they were very pleased because as Keith Reid said, once they'd heard him sing it, even they were convinced they'd written it for him.The Producer of the Album this song was on, (Whispering Jack), Ross Fraser is a mate of John's Manager Glenn Wheatley & he's Scottish, so he liked the sound of the Bagpipes & insisted they be used in certain songs on the album. I mean, who doesn't love the bagpipes, right. Hahaha.
First time I heard that story . Chris Thompson originally said No when Glenn Wheatley rang him asking that John loves You’re The Voice and wants it for a lead single . Thompson hanged up Wheatley saying Johnny Farnham the singer of Sadie The Cleaning Lady isn’t going to record my song. Thompson lived in New Zealand in the late 60’s so he was aware of Farnham’s early career . John himself rang Thompson for his permission after Wheatley failed . Said that he will send him the finished recording before he will release it then make a decision should it should be released or not . Thompson loved it the rest is history . The original Chris Thompson demo got to Australia and in hand of Glenn Wheatley by apparently co writer Andy Qunta who was playing keyboards for Australian band ICEHOUSE at moment in time , he heard John Farnham was looking for songs .
@@markjames3522 I don't know about that. Chris Thompson had known John for some time. He'd worked with John before, with the Little River Band & later as an associate Producer on Uncovered in 1980. As also did Andy Qunta. The information I gave was from an Interview with Glenn Wheatley & Molly Meldrum in 1986, after the release of Whispering Jack. I worked with Icehouse & a few other bands back in the day, as a session Drummer on occasions & as a Sound Engineer at Festival Records, Mushroom & EMI. Those were the days. Hahaha. There is probably a lot of information & misinformation from those days. Great song regardless.
@@denisbryce8746 This information has come from the 3 of the John Farnham books that have been published 2 out of 3 was unauthorised by John but but all books was authorised by Wheatley and it’s the same story is Wheatley’s authorise book as well . None of the songwriters of You’re The Voice had meet John in person before You’re The Voice . Chris Thompson didn’t even know that John Farnham was in the Little River Band , all he knew that Sadie The Cleaning Lady was massive hit from him 19 years earlier and that he wasn’t taken seriously in the industry. After You’re The Voice became a massive hit , yes that all did meet up Chris Thompson and Andy Quanta even wrote some more songs for John Farnham on next few albums . Yes You’re The Voice was a once in lifetime song . Little River Band’s Graham Goble produced Uncovered that his project because he was a Farnham fan and he was writing songs that too high in key for Glenn Shorrock to sing . It was Ross Fraser John’s longtime album producer that was a sound guy with LRB and then become the rookie producer with Whispering Jack .
He is definetly one of the best male singers of all time. One of his best vocal live performence is from a show called the last time. Its from 2003. And song is called when the war is over. His vocal range is unbelivable. Please react , obs he is solo ,not together with jimmy barnes.
"lungs of gold" - he can still belt it out now, and he was almost a chain smoker at the time of this concert - very lucky to keep his voice intact after beating up his 'instrument' with the smokes. But that just makes him a normal faulty human.♥
This is a great example of why I think John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time and can sing anything, any genre, including opera. The performance style, his musical technique, audience participation, and is just so happy on stage, he’s just there for the music and the love. And then there’s those mic stand tricks, who else can throw the mic stand meters into the air and catch it on the way down while still performing. Awesome.
Thank you, I'm so glad you included this song in your vocal reaction video. This song was a huge hit back in my early school days, still totally relatable in today's world.
He has 'lungs of gold'....yes he did and he was a regular smoker (which he's paying for now....get well John!). Unbelievable. One of the best voices ever.
Rebecca, all Aussies today 24 August 2022 are sad and shocked. John Farnham our ICON has gone through an 11-hour operation to remove some cancerous growth from his mouth, we are all sending positive thoughts through our hearts to ensure John recovers from such an operation. Sending you love from Australia

So glad you finally got around to doing our man Mr John Farnham ❤️❤️❤️ He’s an absolute monster and still doing all the vocal trickery in his 70’s. Please if you can, watch his version of The Beatles ‘Help’ …. It’s just insane.
John has one of the most incredible voices. He has this ability to sound and look relaxed while hitting notes and sounds out of the park. Not only that - but he's a fantastic live performer.
September 7th 2023. Loved how you looked so HAPPY while listening to this. It does exactly the same for me. He sings other protest/message songs - see the banners fall, sons and daughters,, etc, and we all feel happy. I live in the UK, never been to one of his concerts, but the videos are amazing - as are all his songs - it's like John is throwing a party and wants us all to join him and have a fantastic time. It's a year since his major surgery - get well, we need you in this troubled world. E❤
Can I suggest his live rendition of the song When the War is Over. His vocal range and growl are exceptional. Its a ballad as well. Soft tones and grit. He hits and sustains his highest octave range in this song as well. Worth a listen and reaction.
It would be great if the volume of your voice was the same level as the video you/we are watching, which is lower in volume. Each time you make a comment, your voice is much louder than the video and we have to quickly turn the volume knob down.
I grew up as an avowed punk and metal head in oz and always wrote him off as pop dross and only in the last couple of years have I come to appreciate the power of his voice and stagecraft
John Farnham is Australian greatest touring artist. Both live show record and Arena record for back to back weeks sold out of thw same tours. He is basically Australian P!nk
Rebecca This Man is a True Aussie legend. Came back from career oblivion & rose back to the top of the charts. Have seen him in concert in late 80s just after this came out & in the early 90s. An absolute powerhouse singer and incredible live performer. Sadly he recently had surgery to remove cancer and may not perform again but praise the Lord we have these recordings of him. A true vocal masterclass is John Farnham!!
Man, to carry this song throughout without missing a single note (or having to adjust or create alternative melodies), as extremely high as it is all the way, is simply INSANE.
The lyrics were written by an English guy initially as a protest song. Apparently the bag pipes was a nod to AC/DC whose performance of “It’s a long way to the Top” John Farnham loved a lot I believe

A man with a voice like this getting mouth cancer if a cruel joke. Life can be rough. Farnsy will always be the GOAT in Aus though.
That was great react at an Aussie icon. Makes me wanna get off my phone and blast this on my speakers ❣️
I freakin' love this song! Everything about it is wonderful.
Australias Operatic ROCK Singer. Never formally trained. Just natural ability.
John gets a lot of stick for doing Farewell Tour after Farewell Tour, but with a voice and talent like that, you can't just retire.
Only from people who love old news.
We wouldn't let him retire. But I think this time he really has.
Could you imagine after all John has been through lately that he came back and did a small tour??? I’d be there! #candream
I was lucky enough to go to 3 of his concerts during his career. My older brothers were at this concert with the MSO. This was 1 of 13 consecutive concerts in Melbourne alone (it was a national record at the time). His hometown absolutely love him and he is my favourite male singer!!
The unofficial national anthem of Australia
You should do his version of "Help" from this same concert! Amazing song and performance!
th-cam.com/video/dv54giOSRKs/w-d-xo.html
Amazing! =D
Being one of John's mic stands would be the most dangerous job in the world!
@@markjames3522 That's cool. I'm not knocking you. I'm just going from what i've seen. No worries.
@@denisbryce8746 nope. The real story was covered in the documentary. The writers had no idea he wanted to do it until approached.
Plz do HELP - by John Farnham💯
Love to him omg xxxxx
You should try ’Help’ from the same concert. It really shows the versatility of Johns voice
You've found "the Voice." Great reaction! Aussie legend. Stadium anthem. John has always been one of the greatest. For a laugh, check out his first song Sadie the cleaning lady 😄
JF had a huge comeback in the 80”s with the album Whispering Jack. A timeless album really.
John is now in his 70's! his back up singers are legendary Aussie sisters vika and linda bull!
Makes that power seem effortless
If you loved this, watch John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes sing 'When something is wrong with my baby', Jimmy Barnes and Jo Bonemassa Stone Cold, or even just John Farnham and MSO "Help" top notch Australian music.
Definitely help from the Same concert is amazing
this is one of the songs I grew up with that eventually got me into heavy metal. the build up the power and the acapella sing along.
Mystified as to how you link the two
In Australia, many of us consider this our national anthem. And Farnsy is our God.
Been loving your videos, it's nice to see someone knowledgeable yet also entertaining and funny at the same time. Good stuff (:
He has lungs of gold....as an Australian I know this man admitted to smoking 60 cigarettes a day
I was thinking that too. Imagine what his lungs would be like if he'd never smaked at all. Wouldn't need that mike at all then lol
He’s a man who just knows his talent and knows this rare song he’s been given and carries it with such dignity
Yes! Would love to see more John Farnham. He's so good. He can sing anything. He really is a legend in Australia
And if you haven't already, you have to check out his duet with Jimmy Barnes - When Something Is Wrong With My Baby
I grew up as an avowed punk and metal head in oz and always wrote him off as pop dross and only in the last couple of years have I come to appreciate the power of his voice and stagecraft
One does not THINK they know this song.
One knows this song.
You definitely need to react to his version of the beatles song 'help' from the same concert, it will blow you away guaranteed!
He's not only fronting a band, he's fronting one of the finest symphony orchestras in the world. And hes fronting it. The balls.
John is a top performer in Australia but also had fame in USA with Little River Band
I've heard this song before. Never knew the title. I learned something today. 😂
John Farnham is Australian greatest touring artist. Both live show record and Arena record for back to back weeks sold out of thw same tours.
He is basically Australian P!nk
THE Voice singing The Voice🙂
Sadly he’s just undergone surgery had part of his jaw removed due to cancer. Sadly will never perform again. Absolutely heartbreaking 💔
Rebecca, you are such an adorable dork! Thank you for this reaction! 🥰
Finally Rebecca, thank you.
Omg yes, omg yes! I was hoping a vocal coach would get around to this! Yay!
Thank you Rebecca.❤❤❤ You are a🌟🌟 A big hug from Sweden.
You're amazing
Man, to carry this song throughout without missing a single note (or having to adjust or create alternative melodies), as extremely high as it is all the way, is simply INSANE.
What an anthem for all those living in Melbourne and Victoria after all that's happened there over the 2+ years!
Did something happen here that didn't happen elsewhere in the world? 😂 I must have missed it.
@@TeapotNinja 8:37 No. You've just been "cosy".
🤣🤣🤣
Anti mask morons tried to use it in protest and John and management completely disavowed them
Great analysis, Rebecca Ray Vocal Athlete. It's great to see you back.
😄❣️
What a great moment to be in! And you’re awesome btw!😂🥳🎸🛸
The lyrics were written by an English guy initially as a protest song. Apparently the bag pipes was a nod to AC/DC whose performance of “It’s a long way to the Top” John Farnham loved a lot I believe
Every time I hear my Aussie king hit those notes I want to CRY
I saw John Farnham a couple of years ago. The man is 70 years old, and he's still got it.
Imagine commanding a crowd of that size. Powerful voice and one of my favorite songs.
As an Aussie, he is king
In my youth this was played in dance clubs and I sang with it at the top of my voice. Love this song. John Farnham is a great singer and performer!
And now at the age of 72 he's still got it..
