- It's pricey but its equally as durable. If you're into big game hunting, this might be a viable option for you. Regardless a 470NE should be on everyone’s list of dream guns, and this is one of the most affordable ways to own one!

The earlier version of the Merkel 140 came with a skinny hard buttplate and the recoil was fierce. I quickly had enough of migraines and whiplash, so on my Merkel I put on a soft pad, had Mag-Na-Port port the barrels, had a large Mercury Recoil Reducer put in and then a slip-on leather pad with three soft layers and wide butt. A dash of white fingernail polish on the front sight completed the mods. Recoil is now HALF and no shoulder bruising. With the porting and recoil reduction you can keep two shots very close with the reduced muzzle whip. When I take it to Africa, I have one of the trackers carry it and consider it a 25-yard and below gun and "finisher". I could care less about regulation as it puts both barrels right on these distances. As to the lever having to be shoved over left: This is something that my $30,000 Perazzis do! It's proper. If you close the double rifle hard as you would do in combat, the top lever comes over just fine. Anyone who shoots high-grade shotguns or double rifles ALWAYS pushes the top lever over. Develop the habit. No problem. The Merkel is of the highest quality and a rifle you can stake your life on. New $14,000. Used $8000 and up especially if there is a leather truck case with it. Highly recommended.
Reliability is always an issue for DG rifles. I have several different bolt guns in DG calibers that has one flaw or another and nothing really changed after repairs. I purchased a Merkel.500 double and all my problems went away. Yes they are expensive but reliability and confidence in your rifle is of the essence on a DG hunt.

With that amount of money invested it better be the end all, be all. No way I'd rationalize cheap manufacturing in a 10,000 dollar rifle.

When I bit the bullet and shelled out for a double rifle. I looked hard at these and brought a Krieghoff instead. 10 years on and no regrets...
Doesn't the safety on the KH tear up your thumb?
@@markatcardinalguns3385 While the KH is heavy and initially in your living room you may notice it. In the field you dont, especially if the game is afoot. The ability to carry a de-cocked and loaded rifle can't be overstated. Thats why Blaser have copied it...

For the Anson locks the Heym is the better choice, trigger etc. But I wanted a side lock so I was going for the 160 model. The triggers are way better on the side lock. The recoilpad which is originally installed is hard on the top and soft below=you get marks on the sholder from it, I change it. Second is the open sights, the shape and size make hard to shoot accurate at more then 35m. So I had to install a scope.
Ah sad it is. I have double barrel rifle taste, on a Ruger budget.
Absolutely love doubles. Living in the U.S. far west, most if not all of my hunting needs come by way of the venerable ol 45-70gov't. 350g-540g cast or jacketed. Not much lives here I'm not confident in taking humanely.
All of my shotguns are, however side by sides.

Hunting in the US is far better I would of thought. Laws are alot better over there and it is really hard to hunt in the uk. You can only hunt on private land and you can only hunt a few things and that is also depending on location in the UK. I always wanted to hunt but for me it will be impossible. However British hunters do dress classy and the way they do it. But only because there either posh/rich or born in the hunting/farming type family and all live in the country side.
@@Chemicall all very true. The laws here are much better, if, and that's a big "IF" some people weren't so hell bent on changing them. We all fight on though.
I think it was more in the tradition, dress, and how things are done that I spoke of. I certainly wouldn't give up my rights for it, but a visit, with the experience would be a once in a lifetime event for myself.
But alas, the journey is most always far better than the destination. Still, any time in the field, or at the range is never a bad time.
superb looking gun basic but does what its meant too, one could bash this about but at 50k to 100k for a holland you would require your butler as a buffer for such occasions..

Popped in shop yesterday and got to see it in person think it’s a perfect gun for what it’s meant to be for but its heavy as f**k.

Beautiful piece of work but you're right, the entry grade would be perfect for getting knocked about as you try to put the buffalo down before he does the same to you!

Hello mate I got a Winchester mod 70 classic super express in .375 H&H magnum it’s CRF too absolutely in love with it. Only had 54 rounds from new I just had it out yesterday as well
I like that it isn't heavily engraved, it's useless and makes the weapon expensive, that level of engraving as shown in the video is perfect.
When you mount that gun you want to keep both shoulders square with the target, otherwise the recoil is going to push it out of your shoulder. Its not meant to be held like a shotgun.
My mate has one. He's shot a Lioness and a Buffalo with it. His next hunt will be for a cull Elephant. I have shot it once, it doesn't kicks as brutally as my .416 Ruger. I would love to own one but I don't hunt the big 5, just plains game for me...
I love the N.E. family. I could settle for a Ruger no.1 in one of these calibers just to have.

Is not the barrel a little short for that cartridge? Seems like you would want a 30" to burn all that powder?

They do make O/U double rifles but it's said that most PH's stay away from them because you have to break them further open to get the empty hulls out which might take to long in a tight spot.

MegaRiffraff it really depends on what they have in the shop to what videos they put out.
I don't mind the Merkel 104 AE however I preferred the Blaser S2 Safari which is now discontinued. If you only shoot a few times a year and its at 20m at a charging dangerous game fair enough. But if you are hunting plains animals that are 300 yards then I want to be able to regulate both barrels to whatever sight picture/bullet combo reload I choose. I have absolutely no experience of African game hunting, but, would you realistically use a .470 Nitro Express for a 300 yard shot on plains game? Surely, the whole point of a double rifle is that it is the stopping rifle, par excellence, for a 50 yard and closing dangerous game animal. That's usually the distance at which the barrels are regulated, is my understanding.
How would I look into getting a red dot sight mounted onto one of these?
if you have ever shot a 470 nitro level recoil gun you will want all the weight you can get.

The idea of trying to take a 7k gun through customs almost anywhere in Africa worries me. In fact getting through an airport to get there from the UK would as well. I know it's cheap by double rifle standards but all the same ha!
You should've seen the camera equipment people lug in and out of Africa.. Heck, a decent pair of Leica binoculars might cost half of the rifle, but any travelling big game hunter has one (or Zeiss, or Swarovski) and they're much easier to swipe than a heavy rifle.

For domestic use no, but British Hunters are still allowed to go and shoot abroad!

Do the owners of these guns undergo the same complications normal shooters endure ? Exchanging a gun or worse still getting a different calibre ? Having an fac is like teeth pulling in the UK . The whole process is designed to dissuade you from gun ownership .

Not many smaller than 308 around in the lower market. Smallest and most affordable would be would be some of the Browning over under doubles.

I cannot believe anyone would buy a rifle that has just come from the factory in an unusable condition, the cross bolt is not working properly, and to require the top lever to be manually pushed across is a recipe for disaster, a double rifle is not for shooting Rabbits! It is for shooting animals than are intent on turning you into a red smear on the ground, I know this is a very cheap rifle, but for just 4 times this price you could buy a reliable second hand one. Stay safe !

It’s a PH gun, it’s built for backing up a client and trust me if you need it that’s cheap a dangerous game tends to eat PH and his clients. Plain is stronger than fancy.
I have shot the heym also in 470 ne its a bit more expensive but that particular one had nice ingraving... Im a ph and guide in and around the kruger park... Double rifles are basically bult for up close and personal shooting .... And reliability is a big factor.... We always say the loudest sound in Africa is when you pull the trigger and you just hear tick... That's why there are 2 barrels bult for follow up shots
Issac Jarrett. Not my cup off tea either. No doubt it shoots great but if you have the money for big game shooting then at least do it in style with a ENGLISH built Double rifle.

British double (not with fancy engraving and wood) could still cost you enough so you could buy this one and make 1-2 hunts in Africa instead according to expenses described by hunters.
I see another benefit - when trying to outrun a rude cape buffalo, it is much easier to throw away 7K Merkel you bought in a shop than 200k H&H you was waiting for cca. 2 years. :)

Had one Merkel 470 , 20 years ago liked it ,but had poorly executed engraving [wobbly scrolls] ,one side clip was noticeably shorted than the other ,it shot all over the place ,was terrible got rid of it ,most expensive and inaccurate gun i ever owned
