    He's so sensitive in his playing, but also dramatic. This is the quintessential balance playing Chopin requires, imo!

    You can tell he was ( rightfully so ) nervous when he started but as he eases into the music it just keeps getting better and better, just amazing. He’s playing quite fast but with so much control it doesn't sound rushed but dramatic, elegant and passionate.

    This one is a hidden gem. The interpretation and the energy and everything. I don't know why the view count and likes are so low compared to his other ones. This is one of my favourites.

    Notice the phrasing in the left-hand at 5:36. Extremely subtle but I love it and have incorporated it into my playing of this piece now!
    The slight pause before the climax on the left-hand makes it sound so much more dramatic and longing. Makes it sound so much more devastating and heart breaking.

    You have here got the spirit of Chopin, Fryc, Frederic, - the young man who created a new artform, new music, well aware of earlier music, and it seems also aware of many many untrodden paths which we tend to forget. Here is a piece with so many spectacular refinements that you tend to ignore because it sounds so natural. But take a look at the harmonies in this piece.
    First time I heard this 50 years ago it was Julian von Karolyi on a DG record, and his rendering of the "fuoco" without much pedal really gave a thing to this piece, I Liu you hits the same mood in the first 4 upwards-figures there, even with a bit of pedal, those repeated notes are feverish. But that was only an aside remark. The tempo is hervorragend, terrific, a bit to the too fast side in my taste, but it works.

    An interesting interpretation, showing a lot of control and constraint. Very delicate playing, which can sometimes be a misnomer for Chopin as people believe that he was this weak, frail, and sad little man, instead of the warm, extremely passionate, personally strong, patriotic, and compassionate person that he was. Just because his health was poor doesn't mean his music should be played in a sickly way.
    Please understand, this is not a critique of this performance, as it is flawless and can only be critiqued in its restraint, but that is purely a creative and interpretive decision, and not a technical critique, nor a real flaw.
    Wonderfully performed, but I still wanted to share the food for thought. ❤️

    This is one of those Chopin pieces that has a perfectly beautiful, if sweet and innocent sounding theme and then goes into the maelstrom pyrotechnics that seem peculiar to me, even after hearing such for 50 years on now. Well, I'll just have to compose something better, I guess! Chopin more often seems divinely perfect, but this is planet Earth after all, and I can't criticize Chopin himself, just the taste of the listener, is it? Do I have an argument?

    A bit too soft at the presto con fuoco in my opinion. Maybe it's the recording's fault (they often lower the volume of loud sounds). But overall geat performance! full with emotions , and the coda is phenomenal!

    • @trifonovfan9819
      @trifonovfan9819 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The ballade starts with andantino, Sotto voce.
      The Presto con fuoco starts at Bar 47. And Bruce played it as such. And I may add, faster than Zimerman.
      I’m impressed with Bruce’s wide dynamics, his power, the dexterity, and subtle pedaling..
      Yes, the Coda is impressive.

    Sometimes too much clarity, lightness and brightness isn't good especially for pieces like this. We need that distortion for tragedy and fiery, otherwise it becomes Mozart. Not sure if it's the Fazioli or he can only do bright & brilliant touch. Even his sotto voce doesn't really sound under. His tone is always 'out'.

  • @sl9312
    @sl9312 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He is very musical, but personally I think that he could play so much better. This sort of Chopin playing does not move me. His playing is too bright, too clear, too organized and rational, too perfect in the sense of every note being firmly in place. There is no poetry, no human element anymore. And the utmost clarity of the piano in the way it is built and tuned is just too much.
    BUT - I don’t blame this pianist in the slightest: Classical music competitions have become so severe that it’s almost impossible to make truly great music anymore. As in figure skating (for those who watch this sport), it’s the same here: The standard of „perfection“ has become so high and the range of what is acceptable in freedom so narrow that it’s almost impossible to give an exciting, moving performance. Everyone sounds almost the same. The standard now is a note-wise perfection with utmost clarity and no wrong notes, which destroys every chance for an exciting rhythm, a beautiful, long singing line or dramatic expression. The pianists are so busy with playing cleanly and making no mistakes that they have no time for letting the music speak. You can even see it on their posture, it has become tense and unnatural, especially with the past winner Avdeeva. Of course, the competitors have to adjust to these standards, from a very young age they are being trained this way or otherwise they have no change of getting to the top. Were the standards different, they would play differently.
    As much as I admire these pianists for their perfection and their immense courage and discipline in adjusting to these impossible standards, listening to them I don’t get the same feeling as when I listen to Cortot, Novaes, Neuhaus or others.
